I had to find a temporary babysitter for next week, so my regular referred me to this woman who had been doing it for a billion years and is excellent.I called her two weeks ago to bring my son next week, but today I found out from my regular sitter that she charges $20/ day, when I only pay $14/ day now. That's all well and good, but I'm a little... oh, shall I say free from the evil influences that too much many can bring? Yeah, lets! So anyway I called the lady, a bit embarrassed because I didn't check in the first place. (I honestly didn't think about it-- the going rate here is pretty even-- $2/ hour.) She verified her rates for me and I apologized and I very nicely explained that I was on a tight budget and that I wouldn't be able to bring my son. I admitted that it was my mistake because I didn't ask in the first place. So she says: "I figure, people will go out and spend $50 on dinner, but they don't think it's worth it to spend $20/ day on their own children." I was so totally ticked off! I could understand if I had insulted her, but I didn't, and I took responsibility for the error. Still, she had to nerve to insinuate that because I can't afford her rates I don't care enough about my child! And also to insinuate that I would go out and spend $50 on dinner! That's grocery money for a week under my roof!
Eh... just wanted to rant. How insulting! IP: Logged |

aren't you glad you had the chance to discover this about her before leaving your child with her? you unconsciously didn't ask about the rate so that you could learn this about her...not the sort of person you want responsible for your baby!funny how the universe can work in your favor..... I agree... I am thankful that I discovered this before dropping my child there. I think her idea is great in theory. A good childcare provider is worth every penny. However, a really good childcare provider wouldn't make judgments on parents based on how much they can afford to pay. IP: Logged |

I just wanted to say.. $2 an hour is a dream come true. childcare costs about $10-$12 an hour where I live. Where on this earth do you live? Also, FU.. i agree with what others said, particularly what Hedgewitch said- very wise.

I would agree and relate, totally, FU. I would like nothing more, than to make my sitter a millionaire, because finding someone that see's your babies as their own, not as a paycheck, is next to impossible.... someone that you trust is priceless but, unfortunatly, most parents are just trying to make it,... just like they themselves are. I think that her action and, attitude toward you, was absolutly, uncalled for and, unkind. It's not like you asked her to change her fees just for you, you simply told her, with respect to those fees, that you had missed asking for that info and, upon discovering and, confirming, you were honest with her about your inability to afford her rates. I would hope that she could, at least, try to understand what it's like to live on a budget. I think you are very deserving of this ' Mommy Rant '. I'm right there with ya' Hope it has helped you to vent, know you are not alone with these kinds of blind accusations...~ geminstone IP: Logged |

Hi FU,How are you? Just out of curiosity, do you have the "minimum wage" thing in Ohio. Here in Ireland, it is something like 7.50 an hour and we usually pay sitters between 5 and 10 an hour. If my husband and I go out for an evening we usually give our minder 15 or 20 Euros for say 3 or 4 hours. I was wondering how you got away with paying 2D an hour, does that apply to most sitters - I was just wondering, thats all? It is such a responsible job isnt it minding other peoples kids? Love Sue xx

Since some of you are asking, yes, the going rate here is right around $2/hour/child. Most sitters have multiple children in their care, so overall, they are making more than that. Now I'm curious... for those who live in areas where the going rate is anywhere from $7/hour on up, how do you afford this? Perhaps it has something to do with average wages in each area???? Most people around here don't even make $7/hour at their jobs, so it would be impossible to pay those rates for childcare. *** Just a note, I think a good childcare provider is worth every cent a parent can afford*** IP: Logged | |
