This should probably be in health, but I'm just really bummed out, and need some replys.
I'm on a beta-blocker, because my heart has an abnormally fast beat. Without my medicine now I get shakey, and sick, but before I was on it, before I had this problem, I was so different mentally. My creative energy is scarce, I mean, I still have it, but it can't even begin to compare to how I used to be. I feel so tired all of the time. I used to be heavy into philosophy, and science, and pshycology...but I feel so tired, and spaced out that my brain can't function the way it used to. I feel like I've been robbed. I'm just totally different mentally, and I hate it. Does anybody know any natural alternatives that I could try? Please help me, I'm just not living to my full potential. It's horrible to have had it, then lost it.
Now I think I know why all the crazies don't like to take their medication.

:edit: Ok, I decided to just put it in the health forum too.

A few questions:

1. How old are you?

2. Who prescribed you beta blockers?

3. Whats your exercise/health situation like?

Beta blockers block beta adrenergic receptors. These are located all over your body and brain, but there's a lot of them on your sinoatrial node in your heart. Beta blockers stop a neurotransmitter called "norepineprhine" from contacting the sinoatrial node, and the sinoatrial node is responsible for speeding up your heart, so the overall effect is to slow down your heart.

Norepinephrine is also a primary neurotransmitter in the brain, and is resopnsible for vigilance, movement, excitability, etc. THey also give beta blockers to people with anxiety. The reason all your energy/creativity is sapped is because you're on a tranquilizer that probably makes you feel tired and cloudy headed most of the time.

You might need a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOi) to increase norepinephrine in your brain, but I don't know if this would speed your heart rate or not. Having a functioning heart is more important than anything else! Eventually you wlil get used to the effects of beta blockers, if you feel bad, tell whoever prescribed you. Ask a psychiatrist (NOT just a pshyician they are dolts about brain meds) about interactions between beta blockers and other anti depressants.

Wow Blue, that got me hot.

(not the subject matter, that makes me concerned... .)
But your knowledge of it. That's hot.

Wow. Did your fast beating heart pose health risks? Or was it typical tachycardia?

I googled and found this.. haven't read it through, but maybe there are resources? http://www.reiki-4-all.com/index.php?showtopic=1504

Hey BR, I'm 17, a cardiologist prescribed my beta-blockers (metoprolol), my excercise situation is that I'm not extremely active, but I do get a workout at least once a week, not including chasing around kids, and everyday stuff. I suck at medical stuff, so thank you for replying. I know that a functioning heart is most important, it's just so annoying. Drowsy 24/7, and I feel like I'm on weed. Just so sloooowww up stairs.
I mean to talk to my cardiologist about it, but my next appointment is in December, so I just might as well wait until then. I've been on it for about a year, and I still haven't gotten used to it, so I'm a little frustrated.
So you think I should see a psychiatrist about it then?

@ Pix...

Thank you for the link. As far as they could tell it was simply typical tachycardia. I had times when my heart rate would go up to like 170 though.

Tachycardia can be dangerous so i'm glad you're taking care of it.

The problem with tachycardia is that they probably don't really know whats causing it. (they only know how to stop it, by working directly on the hearts pacemaker). If you cardiologist tells you to just deal, ask him if an anti depressant might help you, and how it would affect your tachycardia. You dont' necessarily need to see a psychiatrist, your doc might know about drug interactions. If he basically tells you to deal with it though, you might want to talk to a different doctor.

I know, it just sucks that they don't know what causes it.
Thank you so much BR. I will check with my doc & see what he says about it.

Hi Battle

Sorry girl to hear of this!!

Did you ever think of going to see a healer or natural therapist, I dont mean come off the meds immediatley, but I feel with you - (arent you a Virgo) its a lot to do with stress. I know many Virgos who have ended up having heart stuff, even my partner thinks hes having a heart attack sometimes.

Do you practice meditatoin or yoga - I am being "told" this would really help you.

I rate Paul Mckenna very highly, so even hypnotherapy would help. I have been watching him on tv and he has helped lots of people for all sorts of things, phobias, and some have had quite serious complaints.

If your heart chakra is out of balance, relaxation, which could be heightened by some sort of therapy would help.

Will you have a think about it, you seem very young to be taking drugs!

Love and light

Battle,

Do you have a health shop near to you. There are hundreds of remedies to calm you down. I have taken kava kava in the past and also rescue remedy and there are herbs which are excellent for stress. Check with your local practitioner and see what she/he says - good luck girl

Love

There are other kinds of drugs for this, maybe you could try a different one. Also, whenever I take any drug, usually the lowest dose or 1/2 the dose works. Im sensitive to drugs so less works. Maybe they could let you try to lower the dosage.

It might be stress but it also might just be caused by an overactive nerve..

Battle you're only 17, are you stresed out? 1/2 dose might do it, especially if you're not that heavy, make sure you act your doctor first.

Thanks guys,
Sue G, you know that is an exellent idea! I think I will start doing some form of yoga. Thanks. Not looking to stop taking it entirely, but even if I could get to the point where I could get on a lower dosage, I think that would help.

BR, I'm not really stressed, not heavy, and over all, pretty health contious for a teenager.
I wish I could reduce my dosage, but I've gone about as low as I can go at the moment, and it still does this to me.
I've tried other things, but they just have worse side effects on me.

Hi Battle of Evermore...

Yea, everyone here has given you great advice... As blueroamer pointed out, you need the metaprolol to slower/regulate your heart rhythm.. however, I dont think someone as young as you needs to be on any form of anti-depressants... I reckon you ought to re-schedule your visit to your cardiologist... see him/her as soon as possible..tell him/her exactly what your feeling/going thru...

They may need to either lower your dosage or dose frequency..or perhaps try an alternative form of blockade. There are quite a few on the market..and seriously.. you should not have to put up with these symptoms! The cardiologists would be the best bet... how are your thyroid levels? Do you take a lot of coffee/tea/coca-cola? Whats ur heart rate in one minute?

Take care.. and do keep us posted.. as maintaining good health is a very important matter!Wishing you well...

Alexandra
