Scientist: Men do have trouble hearing women (AP) Updated: 2005-08-08 09:26Men who are accused of never listening by women now have an excuse -- women's voices are more difficult for men to listen to than other men's, a report said. The Daily Mail, quoting findings published in the specialist magazine. NeuroImage, said researchers at Sheffield university in northern England discovered startling differences in the way the brain responds to male and female sounds. Men deciphered female voices using the auditory part of the brain that processes music, while male voices engaged a simpler mechanism, it said. The Mail quoted researcher Michael Hunter as saying, "The female voice is actually more complex than the male voice, due to differences in the size and shape of the vocal cords and larynx between men and women, and also due to women having greater natural 'melody' in their voices. "This causes a more complex range of sound frequencies than in a male voice." The findings may help explain why people suffering hallucinations usually hear male voices, the report added, as the brain may find it much harder to conjure up a false female voice accurately than a false male voice. http://www2.chinadaily.com.cn/english/doc/2005-08/08/content_467149.htm IP: Logged |

Funny you should say that, LS, as I have noticed dogs (and perhaps other animals) have difficulty "hearing" female voices as well. I have a reasonably deep, but quite powerful and authoritative voice, for a woman (a good 2-octave alto, ahem, verging on tenor ) - so I have no trouble keeping them under control. Many women I know have difficulty training or controlling animals because they have small, light, squeaky voices!!! (no offense meant here, OK?) AT IP: Logged |

This makes a lot of sense to me. Hubby never hears me. My voice is pretty high pitched. Not squeaky or anything... just super feminine. When I was in high school, I was a 1st Soprano in our madrigal choir.

Interesting...so it really is work to listen to a woman after a long day's work? What if you're really into music? Does it become easier? IP: Logged |

Hmmm.So it should also be difficult for other women to listen to women, yet somehow when women chat they don't miss a word ------------------ We are the ones we've been waiting for. IP: Logged |

Yes, I have always had that deep throaty voice. When I raise it up a octative, Child and animals have been known to run and hide behind curtains and under tables. One should not confuse it with a Taurus temper but,it's authoritive, and so much better if used properly and not with anger, you don't have to say something 50 times to get your point or message across!!! I have learned recently, that when my husband and I talk he hears one thing and I said something totally different and thats not what I said at all. It's all in the preception of how one feels emotional and has been also programed to reserve what was said. Our programing, our past history of communation with others and family plays a big factor in how one my recieve another, so I found anyway. I have been doing much work with this lately and I'm trying to come from a different place in my heart lately, to understand how he may be feeling and precieving my thoughts and feelings and not how I precieve it or meant it. Did that make any sense??? Really trying to walk in anothers shoes to get a differnt prospective and handle on this. Its coming from the heart and he is working on this also, to see it in a differnt light, so to say. Its bringing us so much close and communation skills are getting better. Learning how to truly receieve my other!!! Love you guys!!! Thanks for the great topic LibraSparkle, you hit home with my heart!!!

Women tend to be alot more emotionally and women have been taught to be in touch with ones emotions, more so then man. Man have been taught to deal with other things besides their emotional side of nature.IP: Logged |
