You wanna know what's *GREAT*?!? What's simply TER-RIF-FIC?!?Waking up in the morning and then going out into the kitchen to get breakfast ready and seeing A CONTINUOUS ARMY OF FIREANTS COVERING THE KITCHEN WALL, YOUR COUNTER, YOUR *BREAD AND FRUIT* THAT WAS ON THE COUNTER (THEY CHEWED *THROUGH* THE PLASTIC*, IN YOUR SINK, AND GOING DOWN YOUR CABINETS AND THEN DISCOVERING THAT THEY'VE CHEWED THROUGH YOUR WINDOW SILL IN ORDER TO ENTER YOUR HOUSE! Some had chewed through last night, but I plastered it over...knowing that this would probably happen again. You wanna know what's even better than that?!? Calling Housing (the people who're supposed to take care of on-post housing problems) and being told it's a Self-Help (the people who give on-post housing miniscule amounts of Amdro and plastic bug killers) matter, but being given the number to the entymologist because it sounds like he might be able to help; then calling him and being told, definitively, that it's a self-help matter. Yeah. OK. Let me just laaaaaaaaaay down some bait traps for the FIRE ANT COLONY THAT HAS APPARENTLY TAKEN UP SHOP IN MY EXTERIOR WALLS! YEAH! I'M SURE THAT'LL WORK REALLY WELL! THANKS FOR THE HELP!!! essential oil of peppermint keeps them away....sprinkled in cracks and crevices, and in in their path, directly... also infuse cotton balls with the peppermint oil and place them in the way of the ants' path and also near their entry points. IP: Logged |

I'll try that, but *nothing* so far that people've recommended for regular ants has worked for Fire Ants.IP: Logged |

peppermint oil has deterred the most determined of monster mutant south texas fire ants for us...eucalyptus oil works too, but the peppermint seems a little stronger... using both can't hurt.... also try placing small towels soaked with vinegar in their path....this will send them scampering too. Hedge - I'll try that Thank ya We're apparently all out of Peppermint Oil (husband uses it for tea...), but I'll go get some pronto.Pixel - Thank you Just a little sympathy for my bitchin', you know what I need. But, nope, no husband around right now...he's still on funeral detail and is up near Georgia today. Gah! It doesn't help that I'm having my first *real* PMS attack in a long, long time (it seems that my hormones are finally kind of back to normal after breastfeeding). *goes off on the warpath* IP: Logged |

Ah, the joys of Fire Ants. I had almost forgotten....and roaches and palmetto bugs and poisonous spiders and snakes. The north is not so bad, even if there are no lightening bugs.IP: Logged |

EEWWWWWW!!! Yuck!! Poor you Proxieme!! Thats sucks! Last summer when I stayed with my Dad he had an ant infestation, v gross! They came in through the rotten wood that was around the windows in the sun-lounge. They basically crawled in, grew wings and buzzed over the window trying to get out again!! We decided to hoover them up in the end with a vacume!! Dad then sealed up the gaps and shook ant killer poweder all around where they came in. No more ants! He comes from Australia though, and knows about fire ants!! Check this out! They know how to deal with over there!!! - http://www.dpi.qld.gov.au/fireants/ And heres a fab site with lots of ways to get rid of em- http://www.organicgardening.com/feature/0,7518,s1-5-22-119,00.html http://www.microbe.org/news/fireant.asp
