When I was answering Louisiangirl's question I reminded myself about something I was going to mention a while ago. Since then I have cought myself making the same mistake, and I would be a hypocrite now. But I think it's still important. It's about how we use images here. I do use a file hoster, but sometimes I'm LAZY, and I just find myself right clicking and stealing their URL. Naughty, naughty. Here's why: http://www.maestroawards.com/EN_art_07.shtml In a nutshell How To Avoid Stealing: Simply put, you should never access a graphic, sound or any other type of file from a remote server, unless you are invited or required to by the owner of the remote website. Here are some examples of the wrong and right ways to load graphics: Wrong: Right: The first "Right" example assumes your graphic is located in the same subdirectory on your server as the HTML document, which is often the case. If the graphic is located in a different subdirectory, then you must specify the path. For example: Right: <IMG subdirectory/graphic.gif"> Using the above "Right" examples will give you control over the display of graphics in your pages. You will never have a broken graphic because a remote server is down or because the owner of a graphic decides to move it to another location on his server, or to remove it from his site. News to me, too. Thanks! One question, though... is it not considered a bad thing if you take the image (etc.) and post it in photobucket, then use it? I'm afraid I'm not computer-literate enough to understand the specifics on what makes one way right or one way wrong. If you can answer my question for me, I'll steal ya a smilie! Thanks! Future that would be a copyright issue not a bandwidth issue. You can still do whatever you like, I'd just rather do it properly from now on that's all.

SunChild, I hope I didn't come across as being a smart@ss. That wasn't my intention. I think I'm confused as to what constitutes copyright infringement and bandwidth theft. I also feel like these things should be done properly, and when they're not, I think it usually stems from ignorance rather than malicious intent. Thanks again for bringing this up. I'm sure there are others who would like to know these things as well. IP: Logged |

I knew you weren't future, I understood what you meant. And I agree 100% that it stems from ignorance, and it's not malicious at all. I meant 'Sin' in a really light hearted manner, and not in a strict, stiff way. IP: Logged |
