http://one.org/ You can read about it, and then decide. They're not asking for your money, just your support. ------------------ The less I seek my source for some definitive, the closer I am to fine. -Indigo Girls IP: Logged |

If there weren't so many damn hypocritical celebrities asking me join, then maybe. But until Brad gets his self-righteous, holier than thou, gee-look-at-me-aren't-I-earnest attitude out of my face ... they can take their petition and shove it. ahem ... sorry

Really Tink?I'm perplexed. The celebrities are irrelevant. Personally, in this instance, I think the end justifies the means. If it takes a photo of Brad Pitt to inspire someone to read the literature and learn more about the state of the world, then so be it. I'm all for it. Prox, yeah, you know of course that I'm a fan. But I wouldn't have joined if I didn't feel it in my heart. Our modern world literally rapes and kills and steals from third world countries every day and it makes my heart ache. I feel so helpless -- I don't know how to help these people, or make world leaders/business people with vested interests stop. Do you know there is a component in cell phones, computers, stereo systems, etc. that we pretty much steal from African countries? We are depleting their supplies....*sigh* How about Hoodia, the new weight loss miracle. The poor tribe that owns hoodia was lucky enough to have someone get them a lawyer, or it would no have rights to the ownership of its plants. These people lead miserable lives that we can barely imagine. How long ago was it that women in India were taught that their breast milk was no good for their babies, that they needed *insert name brand formula here* instead? A product that none of them could afford... To me, anything that raises awareness is good. Brad Pitt means nothing to me. Is he a hypocrite? No more so than those who take advantage of the poor. We all are hypocritical, when we own cell phones, etc. (Yup, I own one, and a stereo and a computer) As my good friend FishKitten likes to say, we are only responsible for what we know. You know, I've read lots of the Ayn Rand type stuff, and it gave me food for thought. But I feel you have to give back to the Universe. What you give comes back. We can sit around and meditate and expect everyone to be like "us," or we can try in any way we can to go gently on the planet.

I have to add, that concerning Brad Pitt...Tonight on PBS begins a six hour special "Rx For Survival: A Global Health Challenge." It's about health care obstacles and animal-spread diseases. It's hosted by Brad Pitt, who has travled to Africa. And he's also with a woman who is a Good Will Ambassador, and whose babies are from Third World Countries. I would like to understand what makes him (and other celebs)hypocrites, Tink. ------------------ The less I seek my source for some definitive, the closer I am to fine. -Indigo Girls IP: Logged |

yeah, I hear ya trill. I'm just a cynical ole' b*tch. I admit it.Do I know for certain he's a hypocrite? No, I don't know him personally (neither do I wish to, which puts me in the minority, I know ) but compare and contrast his lifestyle with his supposed concerns and "hypocrite" is what comes to my mind. Also, bored rich person and publicity stunt. If he really cares about world poverty, my first suggestion would be that he do something about that 30 million dollar home he owns. As for Miss Jolie ... don't even get me started. They way they hand out that cute Good Will Ambassador title makes me nauseous. I forsee that once his image is polished up a bit he'll forget all about ONE. He'll move on. And that's what makes me really angry. IP: Logged |

I understand, Tink. There are few celebrities who inspire me, and that goes double for politicians. I am often known as a cynical ole b*tch, too. I know that a song will not feed the world, nor will a concert. But...my heart grows heavy with helplessness sometimes. I do know in my heart and soul that all is as it should be, but I also know that if we see pain and suffering, we should help. And if we cause pain and suffering, even if we all decided to do it together on some higher level, it's still our choice to choose a higher path here and now. I have no problem with celebrities having lots of money and toys. I too want lots of money and toys, and I have to say I love the spotlight sometimes and work in the public eye. I'd like to have my own piece of the celebrity pie some day (though on a much smaller level. Some would say I'm already a "local" celebrity). Maybe Brad Pitt will move on, as you said. I don't really care. But maybe someone he led to the site will do something extraordinary some day. *sigh* Maybe this is a phase for me, too. Maybe I will move on. ------------------ The less I seek my source for some definitive, the closer I am to fine. -Indigo Girls IP: Logged |
