Hey,

I'm having a problem with my wireless router. Called Linksys tech help (3+ times) and nobody picks up the phone . . .

Problem is the whole set up seems to work, but the network is open! Which is strange because I went through the CD installation and got stuck with a message that says router cannot access the internet. But somehow the thing whole thing works and I am puzzled.

I'd like to be able to make it password enabled only, but how do I do that???

Thanks,

Aphrodite

Hi Aphrodite

I set up a linksys network/wireless router at my friends house for them. I understand your concerns, if you have an open network then anyone can access it!! If you would like to set up a password, there are a number of ways you can do this. You can open your linksys configuration panel, and click on security, then select WEP and choose a password between 6 and 8 digits. This will prevent anyone else from accessing your network and you will have to type the password in every time you connect up.

If you cannot find your linksys config panel - which is just the box you use to connect and find your network in - then you also have another way to try. Type into your browser the following address:- http://192.168.1.1

This will take you to the linksys configuration page online, and you can configure your router there. There is a menu called 'Security', click on it, and from the dropdown menu, choose WEP (wireless encrypted password). Then you can choose a new password and protect your network that way. Hope this helps

I will check into this topic later to see if you have any more problems/questions.

Hi Betelgeuse,

Thanks so much for your reply! I couldn't find the Linksys panel and typed in the address you provided. I was able to log onto the router's page and clicked on Security. But I didn't see a drop down menu for WEP.

What to do?

Hey

When you clikc on the security tab, there should be a dropdown menu called 'Security Mode, and select WEP from this dropdown box. Then you should see a WEP Security drop down box, and its best to select '128 bits 26 hex digits.' You should then be able to type a new password into the passphrase box - between 6 and 8 characters - and then click 'generate'. Finally click 'save settings' and 'continue'. You may then have to restart your PC so the router can reboot.

Hi Betelgeuse,

There isn't a drop done menu on the security tab. There are 4 checkbox options and none of which indicate anything related to WEP. May be there are variations in software? I am sorry for all the trouble. I think I may have to call into Linksys tech support one more time or a professional tech person.

Thanks

Betelgeuse!

I did it! I did it! I followed the link you gave and read some online instructions. The instructions on the Linksys page weren't perfect, but I was able to secure the network.

Thats brilliant Aphrodite!

I think maybe I setup a different linksys router to you, so I am so pleased you have managed to succeed
