I had a new elderly lady to visit today, she is blind, lives alone, has no children, and barely gets by....

i saw the people who help her, people who have so very little, one particular lady that helps her with out of pocket expenses is a single immigrant mother! my god...she barely gets by it seemed...

here am i
whining about how my heart aches and breaks
and how things never seem to go my way
and there are people so worse off in life,
and still smile,
i want to be like that,
its amazing...

there are good people in this world,
today proved it.

i see it your way as well....

raising my babe is of prime importance to me...we too have very little resources to live on...and i feel the necessity every day of implementing income generating activity that will support us...

and i lament too often all the 'injustices' in my little world...though i do make somewhat of an effort to acknowledge the supreme beauty of my life...and practice gratitude for all the ways in which i know i am so very blessed...

and well, i have had the strongest inclination as of late to enroll myself in the meals on wheels program...no, not as a recipient, lol, but as a delivery agent....i do think we could make a difference in this way, and the feeling that it would enrich our lives is very strong...

perhaps this is selfish thinking as well??

as i ponder this occasionally, i sometimes shake my head in disbelief, and think, what am i thinking??...i so need my focus to be on babe's upbringing and our financial situation....

but then again....i believe this is something that the universe has in order for us....

would appreciate commentary/feedback.

Salome,

I think you would truly enjoy the Meals on Wheels program as a volunteer. I delivered for Meals on Wheels for a year and it was very rewarding. I met so many nice people that I talked to each time I delivered their meals.

I drove twice a week and really looked forward to those days as it always uplifted my spirits. I also drove for the Cancer Society in my area. I took patients to clinics and hospitals for their chemo and radiation treatments. I became very close to one of the women that I drove for her treatments. I will never forget her. We would stop on the way home sometimes and have lunch together and talk.

One evening her daughter called me as I was scheduled to drive the next day and her daughter told me that she had died. It was like losing a member of my own family. I cried and her daughter told me that her mother had set something aside that she treasured and wanted me to have. It was a cystal dish. I still have it.

I have discovered that when I get bogged down in my own problems going out and doing something for other people brings me out of myself and like writesomething said, you find sometimes that your problems are not as bad as you thought in comparison. Even if they are at least that time spent helping someone else allows you put those problems aside for awhile and you get a really good feeling for doing it.

There truly are a lot of very good people in the world and it's nice to have the opportunity to meet them by volunteering your time.

Dear "Write" when you say you had a new lady to visit.... it sounds as if you are already serving others... I am touched by your comments.

Write,

I've done the same line of work as you are doing, for a while and it can be the most rewarding thing on earth - just being there for an elderly person. Some of them do get attached and some of them may see think that you are the world to them too.

I have an extensive background in home care and working with the elderly. Most of the time I would have to work with Alzheimer and dementia clients.

Seniors do really appreciate it when somebody does give them the time and attention they so need. I have seen this many times.
