I got a Fender, and I don't really care for the twang for my style of music.I would recommend Ibanez or Gibson/Epiphone. Both are really solid guitar manufacturers. I believe Tom Morello of Audioslave uses an Ibanez. For the Gibson/Epiphones (maker of the famous Les Paul)... lots of people use those. Who uses Fenders almost exclusively? Radiohead. Good luck. As far as electrics go, here is what I've got:2002 PRS "McCarty" Hollowbody- -Sustain-for-days -Holds tune perfectly even after serious string bends and climate changes. -Far more versatile than a Gibson Les Paul. I find Les Pauls only really sound nice when they're played hard and loud. (Think Marshall stacks) -It has the thickest neck of any electric I've played. I don't recommend the McCarty for small hands. 1997 Fender "American-Standard Stratocaster" w/ EMG David Gilmour active pickups -Great guitar, great playability. "American Standard" indeed. -Amazing "bell-like" clean tone from those EMG's, sounds like nothing else. Really does match David Gilmour's sound. 1996 "American-Standard Telecaster" w/ 1952 Reissue Broadcaster pickups -Sweet twang. Does rock-a-billy/ bluegrass/ Keith Richards sound perfectly, but also sounds AWESOME when driven hard with heavy distortion. The twang actually helps create clarity with overdrive or heavy distortion, it allows the notes to stand out where other guitars just sound like fuzz. My buddy is in an Emo band, The Prize Fight, and he is in love with this guitar, so those Broadcaster pickups are actually much more versatile than I expected. 1996 Fender "1962 Reissue Stratocaster"- -I'm not too impressed with the playability. It needs constant reconditioning to keep that 7.5" radius neck playing optimally. -I found the '62 reissue pickups rather weak and replaced them with hot-rodded Fender "Texas Special" pickups, now the thing ROCKS. Classic/70's/Southern Rock and raunchy Blues sound fantastic on this guitar. This is easily my least-preferred Fender, and so its mainly my travel electric: I don't care about it getting beat up, and of my Fenders, I'd care least if it were stolen. BUT I MUST INSIST that Fender's quality has nose-dived. Only their upper-end guitars are worth buying anymore if you choose to buy an american one. Their standard issue American guitars suck compared to what they made a decade ago. If you want an american Fender, buy one made before the year 2000. The upper-end Mexi-Fenders are surpringly nice, but many people don't consider Mexi-Fenders. But if you're looking for a Metal guitar, you don't want a Fender anyway. Ibanez's are great for that application. I used to have a mid-80's Ibanez "Iceman" and a late 90's "Talman" (I think that is what they were called), fun guitars when played LOUD. Played on the "Clean" channel, they sounded like sh*t. IP: Logged |

I wouldn't recommend a Squire Strat/Tele. The electronics are cheap and unreliable and sound terrible. The bridge pieces and truss rods are often impossible to dial-in properly and the tuning pegs slip constantly. If you can afford it, I would recommend searching guitar shows or even dealers for a used Mexican Fender instead of a new Squire. Then somewhere down the line when you can afford to upgrade it, consider dropping in some better pickups. I'm also completely dejected by Fender amps. The amplifiers are too powerful for the rest of the components and I've blown out 4 speakers and 2 reverb tanks because they couldn't handle their own load. IP: Logged |

Marshall amps are good for anything LOUD. Yeah, like Metal. They have amazing "presence", but I've always found their "tone" to be lacking. Still, the Marshall "presence" allows them to project their sound well, and so they're a good choice for outdoor shows where projection is necessary, as there are no walls to contain the sound. Also good for projection's sake when no PA system is available. I would only consier Marshall "stacks", where the amplifier and speaker cabinet are two seperate systems. Marshall "combo" amps, where the amps and speakers are built into one whole unit, are lame in my opinion. However, Marshalls are certainly less likely to blow up than Fender amps. I've seen some bulletproof Marshall amps out there. Still, I've always thought their sound quality is poor. "Orange" brand amps seem to be all the rage these days. But they are quite expensive, and currently out of my budget, considering all the other bullsh*t in my life. IP: Logged |

If you've got money, and are looking for an electric, you might check out Canadian Godin guitars. I'd like to tinker with one of those. See if they're as great as they're made out to be. http://www.godinguitars.com/ IP: Logged |

I want to get the ibanez, but there are two problems...1)they dont have the black color I want(no stock, will get it at the end of the month) 2)I might be a little cash strapped So might end up getting the fender pack(I dont tlike it too much, but monetarily,it's very good) IP: Logged |

I have a Fender Strat.... I like it, if you want to go cheap, you could buy a used one. Squires are pretty good. YOu can always do cool things to them, like change the pickups for humbuckers and that kind of thing. Les Pauls are amazing. But really expensive. lol I would go with a Squire over an Ibanez.IP: Logged |
