An astrological guide to what to wear this Halloween

Having trouble coming up with an idea this year? If you're looking for inspiration, check out these costume choices designed to suit your sign. With luck they'll help you with some ideas in time for the big, scary night.

Aries in Uniform
The Ram likes to be in control, and prefers giving orders to taking them. Those born under this sign should try choosing a costume that gives them a chance to play the authoritarian, like a cop, a soldier, or an IRS investigator! Satisfy your urge for domination as a Hun or a gladiator. As an Aries, you like to take risks but you also have a cautious side that can keep you in check. Let Halloween help you unleash your recklessness. Be bold, sexy and creative. Any powerful costume will be fun this year, but you'll get the most out of a choice that is original and uniquely you. Your tendency to leap from one thing to the next may lead you to accessorize something imaginative and entirely unusual. Go with it. The crazier your getup, the more of an excuse you'll have to start conversations with all those new and exciting people.

Bejeweled Taurus
Like the ram, the bull has an independent streak and may appreciate costumes that reinforce power and control. Taureans also harbor a secret love of luxury that their stubborn practicality rarely lets them enjoy, so this Halloween, live it up. Spend the night as an exotic Egyptian goddess or decadently dressed Czar. Make fashion choices you'd usually avoid in favor of your usual conservative look and practical considerations. You'll enjoy the attention you get as you effortlessly take possession of any room you enter. You'll probably make your best impression in a costume that is fabulous, but tasteful, as anything garish or ridiculous is likely to make a Taurus uncomfortable. And don't forget to plan ahead. By the end of October, Taureans can expect to be feeling the tension between Jupiter, Neptune and Saturn. Things may be moving very fast with all the changes underway, so have your Halloween costume and party plans solidified before you run out of time.

The Colors of Gemini
While the Twins are predisposed to nervousness in general, they are highly adaptable and unlikely to be uncomfortable playing any role. There are really no limits to your costume options. Most Gemini love colors, one way you can express many moods at once, so you might consider an extravagant butterfly that compliments your airy nature, or a colorblind CPA to accentuate your silly side. On the other hand, the twins do have a dark side, so the ghastly and undead are fair game, too. Whatever your choice, make sure you get out and have fun. Saturn's influence means you're likely to be working hard this month, and you'll need a break from the ordinary.

Concealed Cancer
The only sign governed by the moon, the Crab is known to be loyal, romantic, sensitive and indecisive. You'll probably change your mind several times before settling on a costume or perhaps wait until the last minute to make your plans, so keep it simple. Cancers often find themselves talented at imitation, so you might choose to impersonate a celebrity (or an unsuspecting friend!). While they can be deeply affectionate and empathetic, Cancers flounder if they can't retreat into themselves from time to time. A masked costume will give you the ability to discreetly separate from those around you, and make for easy last-minute costume planning. The prosperity you create for yourself near the end of this month might mean you have a little extra to spend on the choice that works best for you.

Bold, Beautiful Leo
The Lion is all about big, bold choices. Nothing is too ostentatious. Go ahead and push the envelope if you're thinking of integrating social or political controversy. Likewise, if you're in the mood to flaunt a little of the Lion's notorious sex appeal, why not make it a lot? Be your biggest, boldest self for the occasion; just don't forget to exercise your sense of courtesy, too. You don't want your charisma to be mistaken for advances on your friends or their partners! Saturn is looming large in your sign this October, so you may find that you are a little more down to earth or cautious than usual. Still, you're likely to be the life of the party as you apply your generous stores of creativity, confidence, spontaneity and personal magnetism to the occasion.

Virgo by Accessory
Virgos are at home in costume, as they're accustomed to concealing their true selves from those around them. Their thoughtful, methodical natures mean their choices are meticulously planned. Costumes are made in the details, and your careful choice of accessories will make whatever you choose exceptional. If you're going with a pirate, forgo the store-bought version and piece together your own first mate from toy stores and thrift shops. Or enhance any costume with the specificity and background that only a Virgo can add. You'll be much more satisfied with the results, and you'll make an indelible impression. With Venus in your second house, you'll want to flaunt your lightheartedness and creativity, which makes Halloween the perfect time to break free from your usual pragmatism without worrying about the criticism of others.

Costumes By Sign, Part II (Libra - Pisces)
Your astrological guide to what to wear this Halloween

This second installment of astrologically aligned costumes addresses the next six signs in the zodiac. Spooky, sexy, edgy or funny -- see which sign's sensibilities best fit your mood this Halloween.

Alluring Libra
As a lover of beauty and harmony (and a sometimes flirt!) you'll probably want to go with something attractive or seductive, rather than ghastly. Approachable, alluring or thought-provoking attire will attract legions of friends and new faces to satiate your naturally talkative and curious nature. Since Libras are critics at heart, you might find you spend more time appreciating the costumes of others than your own, and you're seldom shy about sharing your opinions. Your self-critical nature could easily lead you to obsess over making the perfect choice, but between your perfectionism and your innate talent for fashion design, you're likely to dress to impress. Ruled by an air sign, your costume may tend toward the ethereal, and the color of choice for Libra is blue. Some recommended costume choices: faeries, nymphs or satyrs, devil in a blue dress, Libra's like symmetry and coordination, so you might also consider a coordinated couple act like Tinker Bell and Pan or Mother Nature and Father Time.

Sexy Scorpio
Scorpio is the most sensual of the signs, and as such you are probably inclined to take advantage of the sexually charged atmosphere so pervasive on Halloween. This is the one night of the year when your evocative extremes are not only permissible, but welcome. Since Scorpions generally don't mind being controversial, you can use your costume to express your edgy sense of humor or strong political views. Be as provocative, as gross or as irreverent as you'd like, as long as you don't upset the conflict that is already brewing at home this month. Possible costume choices include: Energizer Playboy Bunny, Village idiot/ politician, Black Widow.

Footloose Sagittarius
The Archer is optimistic, energetic and easily bored. The outspoken nature of the Sagittarius makes it fun to dress up and be silly, but his or her impatience makes a low maintenance costume most suitable. Try something humorous and original, but simple, like wearing a shirt that cheers "Go Ceilings!" to be a ceiling fan. You can easily be God's gift to men/women by wearing a bow on your head and an appropriately labeled gift tag. You'll have fun explaining your cleverness to others and won't be weighed down by a lot of planning and preparation. Your footloose nature might lead you to become restless in one place. Maybe this Halloween is a short night out or a versatile evening of party-hopping. Then again, Mars and Neptune left you brimming with charisma and networking success in the beginning of the month, the residual social energy and popularity could be enough to keep you captivated all night.

Spooky Capricorn
The organizer of the zodiac, you might just find yourself hosting the party this year, so you'll want to really get into the occasion. Capricorns also tend to value tradition over novelty and humor, which could lead you to pass up pop culture icons and gimmicks in favor of a solidly terrifying creature of the night. Add your own gruesome touches to the undead and unnatural. Your attention to detail will result in an exceptional grim reaper, banshee or Frankenstein monster. Or lend your creativity to a classic Yeti or classy Dracula. Gifted planner that you are, you might enjoy coordinating a costume with two or three others. After the new moon on October 22nd, the heavy workload that has been absorbing most your time will lighten up, and you'll be in better spirits to enjoy the spirits of the night.

Mysterious Aquarius
The Water Bearer is a free spirit and independent thinker. Whatever your costume, rest assured that it will be original, possibly something that requires an in-depth explanation. Aquarius is a water sign with a singular harmony with nature. You'd probably shine in a costume that involves the plants or animals in some way. Traditional costume suggestions sound banal to you; you'll just forge your own way anyway, so let yourself dream up your heart's desire. Aquarians like to work in groups, especially when they're in the lead, so once again, costume schemes that involve two or three people are a good choice.

Inventive Pisces
Pisces are innately imaginative and emotional, and though they're characteristically shy, they love to be recognized for their creativity. Let your attire be a chance to show off your artistic ability, whether you choose to scale down as a hobbit or appeal to your watery nature as the sea-bound Neptune or siren. Make your own costume, and make it something that appeals to your personal interests and aesthetics. This month could be a depressing time for you, so it's especially important that you immerse yourself in positive energy. Don't let your introverted nature keep you indoors; spend time with children or at parties with friends and co-workers. The Pisces is ever the sensitive fish; his feelings are easily hurt and he doesn't like to take risks. Choose a costume that makes you feel confident, so you won't second guess yourself halfway though the evening. You may experience surges in sexual or creative energy during the month of October. While it's a good idea to keep these in check in general, Halloween will allow you a convenient outlet for both. Be prepared to let your usually reserved nature give way to a bolder side of your personality… even if it's just this once.

Oh I dunno MM, I LIKE the ghastly end of the spectrum

I will be toddling around the neighborhood following my 10yo in my ever-so-alluring green hair, witches hat, and earmuffs/longjohns -- it's going to be in the 30's tonite

That picture is too wild. Did you get it professionally done? You must have to get the red lips and the hint of blue... I'm actually somewhat scared...

no professionals

I was actually at work and a coworker took the picture of me against a white wall so it was easy to remove completely. Then I turned the saturation down a bit in Photoshop.

Cool. Well, I guess I have to start playing with Photoshop more. That is a really cool picture. And very freaky. Very Hollywood.

$100 is good! Your costume probably cost that much, but at least you got to have fun dressing like that. Yes, I bet those wings were HEAVY! And they would probably make it hard to sit! Well, you deserved to win, I didn't see any costumes like yours when I went out the weekend before Halloween and there were costume contests everywhere. A Grim Reaper won $200. He was on stilts, so he was interesting, but that about covers it!
