oh haha. who are some of your favorite indie bands?

My short list of faves as of now:

-Apples in Stereo (an indie rock band with neo psych flavors. indie gone 60s!)

-Bluetile Lounge (slowcore and very emotional!)

-In the same vain, Mark Kozelek and his two band, Sun Kil moon and red house painters

-Broadcast (not gonna lie, sorry gf, but the female vocals are hot!)

-Broken Social Scene

-Built to spill or more specifically, "perfect from now on" is a perfect neil young gone indie type album! Every song jams out at the end!

-Darren Hanlon, witty indie folk

-The Decemberists, me and my gf share this band

-Early Day Miners, another magical slowcore band. sounds like the foo fighters gone ultra chill

-Radar Bros. - if phish went indie, I think they would sound like this

-Grandaddy, pink floyd meets ok computer/kid A era Radiohead! indie gone space rock 70s!

- Great Lake Swimmers - something just struck me about these guys! Good stuff

-Hammock - boarderline post rock, but I place them in the indie rock catergory. I will save post rock for another time.

- Hood - Indie gone electronic, with very nice beats! Catchy songs!

- Dazzling Killmen - indie gone hardcore!

-Slint - CLASSIC

-Kitchens of Distinction - don't know what it is about these guys. Like em'

-Lilys - Indie gone back in time to the 60s to enjoy all the musical styles, than foward to the 70s to take more

-McCarthy, political oriented indie

-Stereolab - CLASSIC

-My dad is dead

-My Morning Jacket: cosmic country

-A Northern Chorus

-Pale Saints

-Rogue Wave - indie with some subtle punk thrown in. lead singer reminds me of an old punk rock singer. nice melodies!

-Slowdive

-Trembling Blue Stars

-Tsunami

-Ultra Vivid Scene

overall 10.9 gigs of indie, 2160 songs
I am not a typical indie twit though. don't hang out with em'. But probably know more about the genre than them. Need recomendations? I can offer some advice on new bands!

post rock if interested, 5.73 gigs, 803

and thats just two genres of over 20, haha. 65.79 gigs of music, 11,872 songs.

I was hoping you'd post your faves as I wanted to just pick out the ones I like

Broken Social Scene, The Decemberists, Stereolab, A Northern Chorus are the ones out of your list that I like as well! I have heard of a few others in your list but need to definitely check them out more, as I'm always searching for new bands to listen to.

Other stuff I currently really like: Knapsack, Sunny Day Real Estate, Pelican, Minus The Bear, Sigur Ros, Explosions in the Sky, Bright Eyes, The Appleseed Cast, and The Concretes.

Now I can answer. Earlier I couldn't, because I wasn't sure what your version of Indie rock is.

I guess I'm not into Indie rock. The only bands I recognized are The Decemberists (because of the Colbert Report) and VTT's Explosions In the Sky (who are great).

I probably would like some of your music.

Pelican - haha, I had them on my list than deleted them! They are like doom metal or death metal minus the lyrics - agree? I like that a lot, because I always thought metal would be COOL if it were instrumental. Now I am certain you would like DON CABALLERO! Slint as well...June of 44, Rodan, Shipping News, Drive Like Jehu, Chavez, Shellac, Shiner...MAYBE Dazzling Killmen (harsh but indie). Maybe The Mars Volta. Those are some of the harder edged indie bands.

back to others...

Sigur Ros - oh yes. i was very happy to see them on Life aquatic! I consider them post rock. I listened to them before I landed in Iceland

Explosions in the Sky - AMAZINGLY UPLIFTING band!!! Post rock gods! Want some more post rock?

Thanks for your bands, I got some new ideas!

Two indie bands I recommend-

1) Aloha- I'm partial to the album "Sugar", though all of their albums are interesting and different in their own way. I've seen Aloha a few times in concert, the band was great live, where they rock a bit harder than their recordings.

2) Denali- I've fallen in love with Maura Davis's voice. Unfortunately, Denali only put out two albums before they broke up.

Both of these bands are low budget and some tracks seem mixed oddly, it definitely helps to have a good stereo to appreciate the sounds of these groups.

I agree with CFF and VTT: Broken Social Scene is pretty good.

"Indie" shouldn't just mean anything... It is supposed to mean they're from an "independent" label, hence they are often super low budget and maintain something more of an underground following.

Therefore, I consider bands like Broken Social Scene, Bright Eyes, The Decemberists, Badly Drawn Boy, My Morning Jacket, Postal Service, Death Cab For Cutie, and Stereolab to all be too popularized and mainstream to consider them "Indie" any longer... I'd call them "post-indie" or something...

carlfloydfan, I'm totally going to check out a lot of the stuff you posted since we seem to have similar tastes! Plus I've been looking for more music, I've been a tad bummed with the way music has been for awhile now! That's so funny you deleted Pelican off your list, I absolutely love them. And Mars Volta! I really like them too!

More post rock would be totally cool. And omg, The Life Aquatic, is one of my favorite movies.

Scorpionic Web, omg I love Aloha! That album is so good.

AG I think you would like some of the other stuff on my list if you like those bands The other bands are a bit similar.

Now to post rock. I also REALLY like when things get spacey!! I like to get lost in music.

I am listening to a band called Magnog right now that you may enjoy. Though they are hard to track down.

dianogah is another one of my recent faves

ditto Maserati

Dif Juz is one of the first post rock bands I got into but a band I return to all the time. Jazzy post rock.

When I go walking, I love to listen to Ganger, its been that way for a year!

If you like Godspeed, check out Do Make Say Think and Fly Pam Am. FPA get downright hypnotic.

-65daysofstatic

-Aerial M: very chill

-Exhaust is experimental post rock. I don't even know some of the things that go into some of their songs.

-Auburn Lull: I think the name says it all!

-Lanterna - beautiful easy going post rock. If you need to day dream, put this on

-Bell Orchestre

-Bowery Electric: Just for the song BEAT I love this album

-Labradford - gorgeous songs. Mi Media Naranja

-Larval - craziness! patience pays off with this group

-Magyar posse - band from..finland I believe? hard to track down but worth it.

-Mice Parade: german post rock/electronic

-Mono: Japanese post rock

-Múm: more from iceland

-Stafraenn Hakon: more beauty from Iceland

-Red Sparowes: If nothing more, the long titles for each song

-Savage Republic: CLASSIC

-Tortoise: If krautrock went post rock

Ulrich Schnauss: German electronic

I shall stop for now.

I agree SW. A lot of bands started off indie but went mainstream. Built to spill, with their first album on a major label, still rocked very much!

I could never stand Bright eyes btw, but I get your point none the less.

Not only are some bands indie, but also Lo-fi, meaning they use cheap recording devices to record their music, most of the time quickly and sometimes even in places like their basements! Pavement as a perfect example. sometimes that grainy sound really brings you in!

VTT,

I forgot that your list included Sigur Ros. I've also heard a little bit of their stuff. I know Thom York is into them.

Carlfloyd,

I wouldn't mind sampling some of your post rock stuff. If you want you can throw some favorites in a compressed folder, and send them to me via yousendit.com. (acousticgod@sbcglobal.com) I'm a Capricorn with a Virgo Moon, so I want quality stuff. I've got Venus conjunct Neptune, so I like the arty, dreamy stuff. And I have a Gemini Ascendant, so I don't want anything that's overly boring.

okay, hmm, it will be hard to think of some things. I have pretty good internet access. For me it is impossible to come up with a sample of anything when music is the topic. I can't narrow anything down!

I am anal when it comes to my music in windows media player. I need the WHOLE album, at least 128 bit (very few are less than that) and each song labeled with an album and artist and genre, all the same way. though the way I label my stuff, within my folders may be different.

Is there anything that jumps out at you? anything not yet mentioned? There is a genre called dream pop by the way. does slowcore or sadcore sound interesting to you by any chance? generally, those are sub genres of indie rock.

just shoot a few bands out there and maybe I can do a few dozen songs!

Musical terms with the 'core' suffix don't generally sound appealing. I could like it, but the genre doesn't sound all that palletable to me.

quote:
I can't narrow anything down!

Sounds like it.

Ok, so I'll pick based on your description...

Aerial M
Auburn Lull
Lanterna
Grandaddy
Early Day Miners

(You know I might have seen Apples in Stereo with Clinic, but I'm too lazy to check to see if it's the band I'm thinking about. If it was them, I wasn't too into them anyway.)

Yeah, I was never a fan of Connor (Conor?) Oberst's bands like Bright Eyes and Desaparecidos.

Built To Spill made some good music.

Pavement is fun.

I used to be a fan of Lanterna, but the more I listen to their stuff, the more it sounds like cheesey electronica; simple chords pumped through tons of sound effects.

Nope, indie rock can be considered either an overcompassing collection of genres of music or the literal 'independent' meaning, of bands who have not become mainstream, and both meanings tend to overlap. They are usually bands that simply haven't been signed yet and may eventually become signed as the mainstream's pull changes, or they may be too obscure or weird to ever cross over. You're simply unlikely to hear them on the radio, unless you get a really wacky alternative station like I have near me, and then they have a speciality show where they play indie rock.

The overencompassing meaning of indie as a bunch of subgenres is harder to explain because it has changed over the years. In the 80s, indie could have meant post-hardcore (if you're familiar with hardcore, the screamy angsty loud music with chugging guitars, there was a softer more emotive form of it in the 80s that was apparently the precursor to today's emo music). In the early 90s it could have been considered grunge with bands like Mudhoney and Nirvana that eventually did make it big. Also in the 90s, bands like Liz Phair, Pavement, Built to Spill could have been considered indie, although they all did eventually get air-time. Also they are the bands usually accused to being sell-outs when they do get big. Currently, if you hear bands like Jimmy Eat World, The Decemberists, The Postal Service, these bands were once considered indie, both in genre and being outside of the mainstream. Their sound is often familiar with many of the current indie bands, although it is only a small fraction of what you could hear, because they can range from anything to very soft quiet instrumental music, to jangly melodic guitars and a sullen singing voice, to strange electronica.

I love the Decemberists. Saw them in Dublin earlier in the month and they were brilliant live - as were Tilly and the Wall, who played on Friday. I'm a huge Belle and Sebastian fan, absolutely love them, but I'll listen to anything decent really. Love Ooberman, Rilo Kiley, Manic Street Preachers, etc....

I REALLY need to thank you! Aloha really rocks! One of my favorite finds in a long time. I REALLY like their style A LOT. The album "That's Your Fire" is just real catchy!
For some reason, they remind me of jam band Umphrey's McGee. That's your fire is the indie version of "Anchor drops" IMO.

wow, I know I make a big deal out of random albums but I really like this!!

I can stomach almost any kind of music, if it has an agreeable harmony, unlike some bands mentioned here produce. Some bands I've payed to go lookie-hear in the past are;

1. MenWomen&Children
2. The Killers
3. Hayseed Dixie
4. Lightning Bolt
5. Hot Chip

all of whom I think are great.

MK is pretty much right. Although people want the label "indie" to mean something (hence why some many people claim to be "indie" or into "indie" stuff), it doesn't mean much these days in terms of being independant. It meant that two decades ago, when being indie wasn't glamorous or chic. It meant DIY and foregoing a lot of the perks that the mainstream offered. But by the early 90's, gazillion one-time indies bands/filmmakers/artists moved to the mainsteam and became anything but independant. Yet somehow they got to retain their "indie cred," even when they were thumbscrewed by financial overlords to do things they didn't want to do (i,e, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Sonic Youth, Kevin Smith). Fans remained clueless about that "business side" stuff, and so they happily assumed that they favorite artist still had integrity and thus were still bone fide "indie." So in the eyes of the powers that be in the entertainment industry, "indie" meant "exploitable." Now anyone who wants to can basically claim to be "indie," regardless to what label they're on, or whether they're working for a major studio or whatever, beause the fans don't question it.

There's been countless critics, writers and fans over the recent years that point out that "indie" means an *image* now more than the ethic it once meant. I wholeheartedly agree and then some. It's an image, and it's also a marketing strategy. Just because something is labelled "indie" doesn't mean the artists really have that much control over their output or their careers. They'll still get screwed over financially at the end of the day. But who cares. It's a consumerist's world, and as all as the consumerists (the "fans") have their music/films and get to blissfully believe whatever they want to believe (like they're fans supporting something meaningful, and not merely manipulated consumerists), everyone's happy, more or less, for the time being.
