this burns me up: i'm into makeup and well as i was searching for a foundation and powder that fits my skin tone, i come to notice that the most prestigious and self-proclaimed 'perfect' brands on the market don't have in stock, foundations and powders for darker skin tones, now i'm not dark for a black person, but on the pigmentation scale, i'm on the medium skin tone range, smack in the middle. For example, i like chanel, and on their website i can only find 1 product (Teint Innocence - Liquid Foundation) thats close to my skin tone (the walnut 8.0 i think), and with most brands its either the tones they offer are way too light and if i even dared to buy them and apply them they'd make me look like a ghost, or their too dark and would make my face look like mud. (excluding Yves Saint Laurent Beauty Brand) Well, you get the issue. What can be done about this?

Ermm i am guessing you can write a formal complaint. Or go into a chain makeup store (like Sephora in NYC) and ask them for advice of which foundation would fit you best. They aren't made specifically for every skin tone, sometimes you have to mix them in order to get the right tone and make it look natural. I don't think its physically possible for them to come up with every tone because people's pigmentation varies even within their body. So try mixing them.

Thanks BUD for the suggestion, i did call the CHANEL hotline and they said that their just starting to get a variety of colours on the marekt, for example, their new baseline foundation 'Teint Innocence' which offers a colour close to my range that i could choose, but i need a matte foundation, because my skin is naturally oily, so the matte makeup absorbs the excess oil on my skin.

So until the double perfection product gets more colours, i can't use their foundations. The only other brand on the market that i like as much as CHANEL that has my colour is LaMer (and LaMer is hugely expensive compared to chanel, you can just imagine, a jar of their foundation is like 85 bucks, but laprarie is even higher) but i'm not sure if they carry the matte i'm need.

But at any rate, the problems been solved, so i'm fine.

I'm glad you found the way I usually personally avoid foundation, even though i should use it from time to time because it oils my skin. But other than that its rather hard to find a perfect color

I can never find make-up that matches my skintone exactly. Especially foundation. This is exactly why I never wear that much. Even the last foundation I bought to wear to a wedding last year was about 1 or 2 shades off....but everyone still couldn't tell the difference. So maybe it wasn't off by that much.

Sorry, I guess I can't help you because I have that problem myself.

I do find that it is hard to find a makeup that matches every skin tone, and I know popular drugstore brands will usually sell to popular colours of skin.( that's why they always come out with shades that match many different tones if they can) If something is on a shelf for ages, it isn't profitable... so they discontinue the shade.
It's pure supply and demand. Market/consumer demand.

Yes it is frustrating.. a good solution would be to find a shade that is a close match, and mix it with a moisturiser ( Oil free, with sunscreen) for a sheerer coverage.. then use a concealer if you need it, for individual and better coverage of problem areas or a powder in the oilier areas such as T zone.

From what I know of LeMer, I'm surprised you can use it if you have an oilier skin type.

I have always wondered how women "of color" dealt with make-up. I've noticed there's a pretty pithy selection in the stores - there'll be 7 shades for more caucasian skin types yet maybe 3 shades for anything darker. However, don't think it's that easy for us melanin-challenged women either. Despite the seeming abundence of choices, I rarely find anything off the shelf that matches my skin tone. I'm pale, but not the lovely "porcelian" or "ivory" kind of pale - I'm more transelucent, with blue undertones and ruddy overtones (sort of like a corpse that blushes easily). Most make-up for pale skin is too salmon or yellow for me and looks fake at best, or like I have jandice at the worst. I only wear makeup to even out my skin tone, since being so damn pale, whenever I get flushed, hot, or wake up with a blemish, it really stands out on my skin like a neon sign.

I've recently fallen in love with L'Oreal's Best Match, because they have the warm/neutral/cool system. I'm a Cool 1-2. Even the blush works on me - and I *never* can find a blush that doesn't look like I rubbed orange peel on my cheek! I often mix the Cool 1 and 2 foundations to get a prefect match for my skin (where I live, there's sun all the time, so depending on how religious I am about the sunscreen I can be a tad, ahem, darker on somedays LOL). Most of the time though, I just use the concealer and powder, since I exercise twice a day, and have to wash my face about 3 to 4 times day.

Anyhow, I don't kow if L'Oreal Best match is as good with their darker shades as they are with their lighter ones, but you might wish to check it out. It may cost a bit to experiment, if you find you need to mix shades, but at least they should have more ot choose from.

Once, when I was giping about never finding the right shaded for me, someone told me if you go to one of those higher end department store that do custom make up, they can mix a foundation and loose powder just for you skin tone. Seeing I'm poor, I always figured I couldn't afford it, so I never had it done. But if you're that deesperate, that something else you could check out. I'm sure if you did some research online for custom make up, you might find something relatively affordable.

Or you can just give up and be like the Mexican women around here who still hold the Mexican social stigma about darker skin and insist on wearing make-up that's 2 shades too light for them. It's a look - perhaps not a good one, but whatever. LOL.

yea right after i typed my post i did some research on lamer and they don't have matte foundation, i was going to edit it, but whatever, more to discuss, lol.

i like chanel, and with my skin being oily, i was attracted to their Double Perfection (matte reflecting powder and liquid makeup) products, but its just not on my range of tones, the one i bought makes me look like a ghost (i think i said that already, lol), but the hotline woman said new colours are coming in, it just takes longer to produce them.

(oh and thanks everyone for replying)

and also, those of you who are caucasian (white), even if you don't like makeup, you might like Lumene brand (you can get it from your drugstore) its Finnish (Finland) and it enhances natural beauty and goes on really light, i did some research, and i was actually interested in, not wearing but learning, about the brand since i never seen a Finnish brand on the market. You should try Lumene.

You might want to check out Bare Minerals by Bare Escentuals. They only have 12 colors total, but you mix them to match your skin tone perfectly, and they have as many darker colors as they have the pale ones. You can get the perfect match whether it's summer time and you've been hanging out in the sun, or the dead of winter and you're skin tone is at it's lightest. It doesn't clog pores like the liquid stuff does, and it really gives a flawless finish to skin that is blotchy, unevenly toned, has blemishes, etc.

I don't usually push products, but I swear by this stuff. I've got crappy skin - oily, uneven tone, circles under my eyes regardless of how much sleep I get, blemishes, and this is the only stuff that can literally erase all of those issues. Using powders, you also get less bacterial issues with your makeup and thus less bacterial issues with your face (blemishes). And this stuff is supposed to be mineral based, au natural.

With liquid makeup, you touch the tip to your finger, rub it on your face, repeat. When you touch your face and touch the container again, you transfer bacteria to your makeup (and back to your face the next time you use it). With the powders, you just wash the brushes periodically. (You never dip the brushes directly into the powder container, you drop a bit of powder into the container's lid and dip the brush in that, that way the lid can easily be kept clean and your makeup stays bacteria free).

Good luck, I know a lot of women of color have a hell of a time finding good makeup that doesn't cost a fortune.

oh yea, um, thanks for the information but i already know that and a whole lot more, makes for a good discussion though. I'm going into a biological related field and i'm veru health conscious and wise...and picky, but most importantly i know myself and my needs. I've seen plenty of bare minerals' advertisments and comercials and they seem nice. But i don't just need something to not clog my pores, but absorb my oils, like matte makeup, i'm sure they have some, it would make for a nice base emergency makeup, but i'm going to use the brands i like regardless, human nature i guess, we all fall through that trap. But I know I'll try them soon though, i do admire the whole 'au natural' thing you said, lol.

thanks anyway, but i'll be fine, and its not really about the money, well i'm sure it won't be, its just finding a colour close to my tone, in a brand that i'll be satisfied wearing, its my pickiness again, i know.

here are some brands that i might wear that have both close to my color and oil absorbing:

Clinique - Suberbalanced Makeup in Honeycomb - thats about 19.50 at sephora

Nars - Oil free foundation in sahara - thats about $40 at sephora (this one isn't too light for me it would probably make my skin glow )

Paula Dorf - moisture foundation - oil free in Sahara - thats about $19 from sephora

and bourgois in either color 24(beige rose) or 26(abricote hale) at sephora for 20 dollars
