What can I say... Yeah its totally historically flawed and has more testostrone running through it than a steroid laden baseball player.

However... the ladies get the "loyal husband/strong wife" aspect and guys get to experience the non-stop reletless action. I tell ya my date gripped on to me through the entire Bedding scene.

Kudos for making the night all that Special Gerard Butler .

Yes there is blood... lots of it, and adulteratoin and overexuberant display of sexuality. But hey... its a Frank Miller adaptation Lol!

Just take is as another slash-em-up action flick.

Awesome movie.

Not to mention hot, buffed, oiled up hunks wearing only loincloths and shields.

Actually, it is pretty historically accurate, surprisingly. I didn't expect it to be at all, so for that as well.

It was also one of the most realistic depictions of an ancient melee battle I've seen.

I'm going to see it again on Imax next week

Hmmm... well some bits were obviously accurate (i.e. Spartan Facist society, Near equal rights to women, Brutal Combat training, etc,) but the battle scenes were totally distorted.

For one thing, the Spartans were the most heavily armored unit in a Greek army (sorry ladies , no leather jocks Lol!) and they used Bronze weapons. Bronze is soft and well... it made a poor slashing weapon; but an extrodinarily heavy brutal clublike weapon. Not a good thing getting wacked by a greek short sword.

The Phalax formation and the spear thristing.. yep totally accurate.

Apart from the obvious thing that Persian army weren't made up of mosters Lol, the Persians didn't use War Elephants at the battle of Thermopyle. The immortals... yes Xerxes did send em in and yes... the Spatans slaughtered them all.

I saw it I loved it...for more reasons than just the obvious (Xodian Knows )

It certainly was a perfect date movie. Though I was more intrigued by the history aspect and by the fact that it has turned into a FAD in the United States and half the audience in the overtly overcorwded theater had no idea as to what Thermopylae actually is, not to mention Sparta. I have also discovered a rather fascinating historical aspect to it (of which I was unfamiliar with prior to watching it).

The Jewish holiday of Purim is about a woman Esther(jew) who was married to a Persian king Ahasuerus and his advisor Haman decided to kill all the Jews not knowing the Queen is Jewish...neither did the king but whatever. So Esther helped out the Jews by telling the king her identity and since he loved her, he saved the Jews and hung his advisor. Thats what Purim celberates....Ahasuerus is a hard name to pronounce in the west and the Greeks called him Xerxes I...

I though that was some fascinating trivia especially since Purim was last week.

*giggles* Xodian, that definately pleased my taste for the lovely Scorpio. Not so much my bf who kept on rolling his eyes at me loving gazes but either way. Good stuff.

But yes as for history a few things were distorted. They were not very careful on the choice of words. Like Xerxes calls them barbarians. He could have said savages instead because barbarians is a strictly Greek word. I though that was a bit off. Plus some other things, with the whole bowing to him. They made him seem awefully vain when it wasn't glory he really wanted.

Yea i thought the elephants was a bit off. If i recall correctly it was the Carthagians (Hannibal) who used them against Rome rather than Greece?

Yep BUD. Gotta say, me really impressed at your knowladge of Ancient Greek History. Yes totally agree that the image of Xerxes has been totally distorted. Yes he was arrogant than most Kings but he wanted to follow through in his father's footsteps (i.e. Darius.)

And by no means was he... flirtacious. Its as if the intended message was that he is homosexual or something Lol!

Actually Persians did use War elephants in battle; Just not at Thermopylee. The rige was narrow enough as it was. Xerxes tried so hard to fight in the manner of his ancestors; man-to-man. But the Spartans just couldn't be hindered. So... Yeah; He got the archers to shower the Spartans with arrows.

A graphic novel actually but it is a fictional depiction of the battle of Thermopyle. As I said... I had to turn the reason side of my brain off while watching the film Lol!

Yea I was just going to point out how he was the one who wanted to follow in Darius' footsteps. I mean his grandfather was Cyrus the Great. I actually didn't realise Xerxes I history until i started looking it up. Good stuff.

LOL! He did look awefully transexual in the movie. We all definately noticed that.

quote:
Actually Persians did use War elephants in battle;

I wasn't sure of this. Thanks for the heads up.

Hehe I loved it. "then we will fight in the shade".

Have you noticed how they made Leonidas look a bit like Jesus in the end. I thought that was made in order to invoke sympathy from the public but turns out thats not the case. Angry Xerxes did remove Leonidas' body from the battle and proceeded to crucify him as a show. He later felt bad about the desecration and proceeded to return the body to Greece.

Just like Troy, you could not pay me to watch this movie. Alot of Greek epic movies don't seem impressive to me....I know I would fall asleep through this one. But on the other hand, I loved Xena the Warrior Princess (favorite show of mine back in the day...too bad Oxygen doesn't play the re-runs anymore).

That movie is badass! I wanna see it in IMAX but Hamilton doesn't seem to have one. Hmm. Should I go to Toronto then...?

im going to go see it again in IMAX next week.

As for Xena i loooveed that show. Grew up on it. Even showed it back in Ukraine. But sadly cancelled it cuz Ares died. Though im more than annoyed they made Aphrodite such a sk*nk. She is by far my favorite goddess and the epitomy of Libra which does not make her one!

Aphrodite really was like that though,I think they portrayed her pretty realistically.

I totally wanted to be like Xena....gosh I loved her moves and her style.

I completely forgot that the guy who played Ares died.

Oh no no no! Aphrodite was the goddess of love and beauty. She didn't go sleep around with everyone. She was a free spirit who enjoyed love and beauty in all. Yes she was the patron goddess of prostitution but that was sacred. Not the way we have today. She was by NO means a sl*t. This Venus in Libra. Those are amazing, kind, beautiful people.

Hmmm... I don't know; Decapitations, Amusing oneliners (especially the Spartan Chivilry Scene Lol!) and testostrone galore. Doubt you'll fall qasleep through that .

I only credit Troy for one thing; I showed a different side of Achilles' character; Showed him as an anti-hero of sorts. Not too shabby.

Awww man, I know my bf would love this one. I do like historical films, I'm just not a big fan of Greek epics. I'm not a big fan of gore either, but I can deal with it (I did watch the Patriot). Luckily for me my bf hasn't brought it up, we haven't been to the movies in a mad long time anyways...LOL.

Well as I said before, just take it as another Gung-Ho action movie Lol!

quote:
This Venus in Libra. Those are amazing, kind, beautiful people.

Yet practically everyone else lables us flirts/Frickle. Uh-uh, Libra in Venus aren't frickle; They just are picky as to who they consider the love of their life. He/she has to be just perfect (everything that a Libra in Venus hopes they would be) or else it ain't worth getting into a perminent relationship with.

People just don't seem to wanna see it that way.

Well then.....that was a boost to my ego! (Boyfriend has venus in libra) I didn't think libra venuses were that bad in the love department....just a little bit on the flirty side. But hey, I have venus in gemini so you can imagine what everyone says about us .
