In GU swerve says why do people need a religion to tell them what is right and wrong.
Well this really got me thinking, yes that is what it is for so why all the fuss???

Then in my class the other day it comes up... what is the golden rule?

"Do unto others"..... dont know exact wording or source but i presume this come from the bible or some other religious text to me this means.. ( what you do unto others will eventually be done unto you.) Well .. yes.. i beleive that so then therefore what purpose does religion serve?
I wonder what other people think about this.

What is religion for?

I don't really believe in religion in the way that most people do. I think that it was a man made way to guide us through life. A more structured way than just using your own logic, morals, and common sense. People are always trying to add structure to things. It was the words of spiritual people that were taken and used to form sometimes violent cults. I'm not saying that all religion is bad, because it has it's good and bad points. It is a good way to form community if it's used the right way. It has also brought a lot of people into a state of better living. I kind of think it's something like Bertrand Russell's quote, "A stupid man's report of what a clever man says can never be accurate, because he unconsciously translates what he hears into something he can understand." How could we possibly try to translate a higher being than ourselves into a bunch of words on paper and church services and then SAY that we understand everything about it?

That's just what I think, anywaysss. Are you a religious person, or were you just doing a bit of thinking?

I was raised catholic and attended the typical rituals up to confirmation in the 4th grade. I never felt a connection to my religion. I didn't participate or go to church after that. I never knew what i was but i never rejected the idea of a higher power. My two very close couzens attend catholic schools while my sister and I were in public. I sensed that they felt they were better than we. Anyway.. When i read linda goodman i took a new interest because she used quotes from the bible in a way that showed that there could be other meanings. I liked that so I began a spiritual search and have read a lot of books and things like that. I believe that we are spirits in human form and i feel like i am getting closer and closer to the truth, which is that we are all one, that we live on a planet that has certain laws( that we are kind of stuck with) and that we will ultimately create a golden age as we all expand our understanding of things spiritual. There is more but those are some of the big ones.

How much of what folks think of as their faith and beliefs and all...
is in reality, subtle(and even not so subtle)following a point of view because our parents did, and with such programming since infancy, and flavored heavliy by one's cultural and societal enviroment?
When you let go of everything you have been told....or read....or has been beat into you;
what is left?
Are you lost without a mythos to cling to?
Are you afraid to find out what realy is?
Ae you afraid to know thyself?
Humans seem to have great difficulty finding themselves and their connection to it all without assigning some pre-structured organized narrow viewed label to it; be it Christian, Wicca, New Age, even Atheistic etcetera.
There have been thousands of religions and "gods" throughout the short span mankind has been in existence.
Do folks really think they were not another lifeform before the human bioform evolved into being? As it will again if we do not go extinct first.
Religion is one of the most amusing and deceptive practices humankind has had and has.
It Blindfolds, and sets others to wearing rose colored glasses, it sets up punishment and reward like dogs being trained.
It lays out its various ever changing creedos throughout time and social/cultural climes. It sets up fear and denial mechanisms. As the past is done so shall these times and belief structures pass as they evolve, or mutate or blend with others.
Or are abandoned eventually once childhood for humankind has ended.
History repeats. Belief structures change labels, and deities too.
Eventually perhaps humankind will turn around and think..."why are we brainwashing ourselves? Let us see what is real!"
