OK IM INTERESTED IN HEARING THE MOST INFLUENTIAL MUSICAL ALBUM YOU HAVE HEARD AND WHY....MINE- PINK FLOYD "PULSE" BECAUSE IT HAD OLD AND NEW TRACKS BY THE BAND THAT WAS PERFORMED LIVE. IT OPENED A WORLD OF INSTRUMENTAL AND LYRICAL DEPTH THAT CAN TOUCH EACH AND EVERY EMOTION WITHIN A MATTER OF HOURS. SO BEAUTIFUL. THIS GROUP WAS/IS HARDLY RECOGINZED FOR THE TALENT THEY POSSESSED. BUT I THINK THAT'S WHAT MAKES THEM SPECIAL. IP: Logged |

Wait, are you claiming Pink Floyd isn't recognized for their talent? On what planet?! Critics drool themselves silly over Floyd (pick up any copy of Rolling Stone or Q or any other music mag). Fans love them - they've sold 200 million CDs/records. Their tours have been selling-out for years and they were just offered a record-breaking $250 million dollars up front to go on a new tour. The Wall is in development as a Broadway musical. Their fellow musicians adore them and they are frequently cited as influences (check out Billy Corgan's induction speech for Floyd into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame from a few years back). They have been wildly praised since their start in the London club scene. I'm glad you love Pulse. And this is a great thread topic. But you can't chalk up Pink Floyd's specialness to being "hardly recognized" because that's crazy talk. IP: Logged |

I have been a Floyd fan since they first began their career. Still am. No one makes music the way they did and still do. I would have to say that all of Pink Floyd's albums inspired me and I can't really pick a favorite one. Love them all. I used to wait with great anticipation for their next album to be released and when it was I immediately went and bought it. Didn't even have to hear songs from it first. They never let me down either. Of their older albums my favorite is Obscured by Clouds which was a movie soundtrack. Love Relics and Ummagumma too. Their music surpasses anything other musicians have ever done I think. There are always things going on in the background of the music. That's why it's so transporting to listen to Floyd with headphones on. Also have had a major crush on Roger Waters for years. IP: Logged |

Wow, thank you all for the wonderful welcome. I love this place and all the topics that are discussed! Almost everyone has such positive feedback and that's one of the things that make this place so special.I guess to clarify w/ Nefermi. Yes, now Pink Floyd is getting the more of the recognition they deserve. From my PERSONAL experience, however, when Pink Floyd is mentioned, it isn't uncommon to receive the comments "Oh thats drug music." or "Ya people on acid only listen to that stuff" I think that is something they were stereo typed with for years. And while many people that did listen to them did experiment with that, there was also a much larger realm that their music touched. So while you may be thinking what I am saying is "crazy talk", it's just from personal experience. And rather than seeing what I'm saying as being from another planet (which, if that were to be true I would consider myself very special) maybe look at what I'm saying as someone that is another person that has trememdous respect and love for Pink Floyd. Oh and I would like to add that the only thing that was missing for me on the Pulse album was Roger Waters. His political influence in Pink Floyd's music and lyrics was both inspiring and eye opening. IP: Logged |

Solane Star- Yes! Led Zeppelin!!! I can't tell you how in love with Jimmy Page I have been since I watched The Song Remains the Same. OMG!! Such a beautiful creature and what talent. To see someone make music w/ his guitar and a violin bow, something so unique and yet so deeply felt! Good Choice!!! Thank you so much for the welcomeMirandee- What did you think of Pink Floyd's Animals album? Particularly the track titled "Dogs"? That one is a close second to Pulse IP: Logged |

Hahahaha, Miss Aries, you are so right about the connection with Pink Floyd and drugs. I got that all my life. Every time I mentioned to someone how much I loved listening to Floyd music their first response was, " Do you do drugs?" So funny because really, outside of Sid Barrett who was not a part of the band by the time they made it really big in America, Pink Floyd was never known as a band that did a lot of drugs. Not like others of their era at any rate. I used to tell people that I didn't need the drugs, I got high on Floyd's music. I loved the Animals album!! Dogs. Yes!! But my favorite one from the album was Pigs. Roger Waters could sometimes be very cynical in his lyrics but you could never deny the truth or reality in them. The Final Cut album of Floyd's didn't get the rave reviews that the rest of their albums did but I really liked that album of theirs too. I also loved Roger Waters solo album when he left Floyd, The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking. My three kids grew up to be huge Floyd fans too, mainly because they grew up listening to their music around house, and they went to all their concerts when they appeared in Detroit. But I think I traumatized them once listening to " Careful With That Axe, Eugene." LOL They all came running into the room wanting to know who was screaming. I saw David Gilmour in concert with his solo album and he was awesome. Outstanding guitar he plays and he has what I feel is the best singing voice in Rock music. I think that Pink Floyd maybe didn't get as much of the media attention that other bands did at the time. I think that was due to the fact that they were all very private about their personal lives and in fact, didn't do the drugs that other bands did or the outrageous things they did. But they always got good reviews on their albums, their tours and the music. Which I feel, is all they cared about. They weren't really into the PR and stuff that other bands were. I think I just wrote a review about Floyd. IP: Logged |

LOL! Mirandee, I agree! You did write a review, and I enjoyed reading it! I had to laugh at your memory of "Careful With That Axe, Eugene". It reminded me of a road trip some friends and I were taking. We got caught in the middle of a snow storm (around midnight). I was in the passenger seat. The driver was had white knuckles glued to the stearing wheel and I was blasting "One of These Days" from the Meddle album. It got to the point to where he was screaming "I can't take this it's too intense!!" I on the other hand, was enjoying myself to the fullest. But it makes me smile remembering that moment of experiencing full blown Pink Floyd. I also am raising my son on Floyd. I did the headphones on the belly w/ him when i was pregnant. Hopefully he will respect them like his mother does. I have faith he will. Aww Pink Floyd stories. They're good for the soul, don't you agree IP: Logged |

Mirandee and I share a Floyd fave: Obscured by Clouds I think I like Meddle next tho -- and on the Axe theme, how about "One of These Days (I'm Going to Cut You Into Little Pieces)" I saw the Animals tour, MISS A -- it was a fabulous extravaganza with huge balloons (the parade kind) of animals floating around the arena during the show..... There are Floyd songs and lyrics posted over in the Favorite Songs thread in FFA..... Zala IP: Logged |

Hi there Miss Aries!Pick only one?!? Argh! Don't make me choose just one... Paul Simon ~ The Rhythm of the Saints because he can say something so poignant in unusual ways. These songs in particular are my fav. tracks from this album: The Cool, Cool, River Moves like a fist through the traffic Anger and no one can heal it Shoves a little bump into the momentum Its just a little lump But you feel it In the creases and the shadows With a rattling deep emotion The cool, cool river Sweeps the wild, white ocean Yes boss. the government handshake Yes boss. the crusher of language Yes boss. mr. stillwater, The face at the edge of the banquet The cool, the cool river The cool, the cool river I believe in the future I may live in my car My radio tuned to The voice of a star Song dogs barking at the break of dawn Lightning pushes the edge of a thunderstorm And these old hopes and fears Still at my side Anger and no one can heal it Slides through the metal detector Lives like a mole in a motel A slide in a slide projector The cool, cool river Sweeps the wild, white ocean The rage of love turns inward To prayers of devotion And these prayers are The constant road across the wilderness These prayers are These prayers are the memory of god The memory of god And I believe in the future We shall suffer no more Maybe not in my lifetime But in yours I feel sure Song dogs barking at the break of dawn Lightning pushes the edges of a thunderstorm And these streets Quiet as a sleeping army Send their battered dreams to heaven, to heaven For the mothers restless son Who is a witness to, who is a warrior Who denies his urge to break and run Who says: hard times? Im used to them The speeding planet burns Im used to that My lifes so common it disappears And sometimes even music Cannot substitute for tears Born At The Right Time Down among the reeds and rushes A baby boy was found His eyes as clear as centuries His silky hair was brown Never been lonely Never been lied to Never had to scuffle in fear Nothing denied to Born at the instant The church bells chime And the whole world whispering Born at the right time Me and my buddies we are travelling people We like to go down to restaurant row Spend those euro-dollars All the way from washington to tokyo I see them in the airport lounge Upon their mothers breast They follow me with open eyes Their uninvited guest Never been lonely Never been lied to Never had to scuffle in fear Nothing denied to Born at the instant The church bells chime And the whole world whispering Born at the right time Too many people on the bus from the airport Too many holes in the crust of the earth The planet groans Every time it registers another birth But among the reeds and rushes A baby girl was found Her eyes as clear as centuries Her silky hair was brown Never been lonely Never been lied to Never had to scuffle in fear Nothing denied to Born at the instant The church bells chime And the whole world whispering Born at the right time ------------------ After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music." - Aldous Huxley IP: Logged |

I would say "White Light White Heat" by the Velvet Underground. This album is amazing and influenced some of my favorite music. I think without the Velvet Underground, there would be no Violent Femmes, no REM, no Pixies, no Flaming Lips, no Pavement, no Weezer, and no lots of other music that is Very Important.AG-- I love that one too! God, I love Pink Floyd. I haven't listened to them in awhile, since I've been dabbling in more recent music, but I heard In The Flesh? today on the radio and my heart just jumped in my throat. They're my favorite band, hands down. Mirandee- that's funny, I've always thought Roger Waters was a very attractive guy.So, although there's really so much out there that I love, my favorite album would probably be a toss up between Wish You Were Here and Saucerful of Secrets.
