Being a Victim of Your Personal History

For well over a quarter century now, I've worked with people to help them access higher levels of awareness. It's my experience that most people live their life in the wake by hanging on to personal histories to justify their self defeating behaviors, and the scarcity in their lives. They hang on the past pains, abuses and shortcomings as calling cards to annnounce a " POOR ME " status to everyone they meet, within minutes of their introduction. " I was abandoned as a child, " I'm a alcoholic," " I'm an incest survivor," " My parents were divorced and I've never gotten over it." the list could go on for hundreds of pages.

Your past is over! By bonding to your past, you not only ensure that you'll be immobilized today, but you prevent yourself from healing. By referring to past struggles and using them as the reasons for not getting on with your life today, you're doing the equivalent of attributing to the wake the abliity to drive the boat. This also works in reverse. Many people refer to the reason why they can't be happy and fulfilled today. " Everything has changed," " no one respects anyone else like they used to," "A dollar used to be worth a dollar, now everything is so over priced," "When we were kids, we respected authority; today's kids walk all over their parents," This is also living in the wake and assigning responibility to the past for why you can't be successful or happy today.

There are people who go a step further to ERASE their personal histories in order to be free.
If you haven't read Carlos Castaneda here is an excerpt form one of his books:
quote:
Personal history must be constantly renewed by telling parents, relatives, and friends everything one does. On the other hand, for the warrior who has no personal history, no explanations are needed; nobody is angry or disillusioned with his acts. And above all, no one pins him down with their thoughts and their expectations.

Sometimes people do need to bring up things in the past so they can be worked through properly.

It is by talking to someone else with an outside perspective, i.e a counselor or psychiatrist that people are able to purge themselves of these toxins of the soul and not let them manifest later on in undesirable ways, because the person can't understand why it is that they are feeling or reacting this way; they happen as inexplicable impulses.

Personally, I work through my problems by writing down how I feel, but many people aren't able to do this.

My friend felt she was going insane at one point because she had unresolved childhood issues she hadn't worked through yet or had counseling for. Her mother died when she was 5 and her Dad abused her.
When she had counseling, she was able to start her healing.

If these traumatic things which occur are not worked through, they will remain buried inside where they act as toxins.

On another note, I absolutely agree that we all have it in us the power to let go of our past and shape our own present.

"Yesterday is history
Tomorrow is a mystery
Today is a gift
That's why they call it the present"

P.S. Until human beings become fully self-aware, we are nothing more than fragile, complex animals; each governed by his or her limited viewpoint; forever subject to the chemical reactions of the body and mind.....which can be strengthened or weakened by his or her environment- I'm afraid we are all subject to these limitations while in the body.

Learning to understand others by looking at things from a psychological perspective, etc will lead to enlightenment and understanding.

Judgmentality will prevent it.

Though it does give us an excuse not to feel sorry for others and therefor saves a lot of energy.
