I have an idea and I thought maybe someone might want to illustrate it and, if possible, post the result. I think its funny, but then, I have an unusual sense of humor.Okay,... 1st Scene: JESUS is addressing the multitudes. There is a woman behind him, or beside him, on the ground, crying and shielding herself from attack. Jesus: Whosoever among you is without sin, let him cast the first stone. 2nd Scene:
Everyone is throwing stones as hard as they can, the woman is being pummelled to death, and Jesus is shouting: NOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 3rd Scene:
A little while later... Jesus: Lord, Lord, why hast thou forsaken me? A Voice From the Clouds: YOU SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN TO THEM BEFORE CONFESSION.

Logically and dealing in reality it wouldn't work for 2 reasons, the Jews don't have confession and the Catholic Church ( which is as far as know the only Christian faith that has the rite of reconcilition which is what confession has been termed for many years now since Vatican II ) wasn't established until many, many years after the death and resurrection of Jesus. But it does work if you consider that a person's sins are forgiven in sincere contriteconfession so those throwing stones didn't have any sin. For that reason I found it to be a very good joke. It would have definitely worked in Monty Python's "Life of Brian." hee hee IP: Logged |

Good grief!Way to miss the point. Dissecting a comic strip. Oi vey! AG is a Cap with Moon in Virgo, but whats everyone else's excuse? I wonder, if you guys discovered a lost Shakespearean Sonnet, or a lost Gospel, would you comment first on the spelling, and then on nothing else? Way to find the fault and overlook the pearl. A Jewish man going to confession is interesting how? How is it funny? What point does it make? Sounds like you three just wanted to crap on my thread, and replace a brilliant idea with an idea that reveals no vision whatsoever. Mission accomplished. Thanks a lot. Wrong, Mirandee. It works because they believe they are without sin, thanks to the institution of Confession. If they were really without sin, they wouldnt have thrown the stones. That's why it works. That's why its funny. The point is that Christ's statement is ironic. He is not really saying that a person without sin should, or would, cast the first stone. He is reminding them that they too have sinned. The joke here is that he is taken literally. Much as you all took my comic literally, and read the Letter, not the Spirit of it. IP: Logged |

Good grief, thanks for telling all of us how we have to interpret things, HSC If we had to figure out the joke and use our own intrepretation then maybe you should consider comedy is not your calling, HSC. Cartoons are only funny if people can understand and get the punch line. Incidently, it wouldn't sell because even if done in humor the way you meant it no one publishes material that is religiously bigoted. We can misinterpret your cartoon if you can misintepret religious practices. But posting this and coming back with your remarks demeaning others IS a good wait to attempt to bait others into an argument and stir up more trouble at LL, HSC. Which is really what you do best. That's something I think we all get. IP: Logged |

Personally, I just think it was missing a little context. In the context of the actual Biblical story, there would be no practice of Confession. That seriously set me back in understanding the point you were trying to make. If I saw the comic strip, and it was set in modern times, then it would make a bit more sense for me since all Christians have access to forgiveness. But, hey, at least now you know how to improve on your design. Just consider this a rough draft. IP: Logged |

Good grief indeed If AG can excuse his error in thinking by his Cappy Sun and Virgo Moon, then may I hide behind my Cappy Ascendant and Virgo Moon for the error of my ways. The "spirit" may have failed because it borders lumping different Faiths and Practices together to create sillyness defined as a comic strip" ...?? Not to mention I got lost in that couple thousand missing years there edited

I find everything funny. When my boys are naughty I just can't help laughing. "Mischief" amuses me.I'm too lazy. Prefer to "accentuate the positive". I try to ignore the negative, then perhaps it won't grow. Mind= matter. That way I can just stay here and relax. Ahhhhh IP: Logged |

You're welcome. Evidently, somebody had to.
quote: If we had to figure out the joke and use our own intrepretation then maybe you should consider comedy is not your calling, HSC.
Have I ever purported to be, or to have ambitions of being, a comedian? As I said, I'm trying to make people think. Some people like to think, others find fault with anything that makes them think. Some people like their meat chewed for them, others like something meaty to chew on. Thinking people are not thwarted, but invited, by a style like mine. That's my honest opinion. No apologies if it is unflattering to you.
quote: Cartoons are only funny if people can understand and get the punch line.
To each their own. The people I told it to had no problem understanding it without my commentary. They even laughed. I think one's taste in humor depends on a variety things, including intelligence. I'll be the first to admit that my sense of irony has developed to a very complex level, and is not for everyone. I'm sure my brand of humor won't win me any popularity contests or spots on network television. But then, we can't all play to the rabble. quote: Incidently, it wouldn't sell because even if done in humor the way you meant it no one publishes material that is religiously bigoted.
Nice try. It's not religiously bigotted. It targets ignorance and hypocrisy. In this case, religious ignorance and hypocrisy. And, I agree, something this controversial won't show up in most publications, although there are plenty of independent publications that would take a shine to it. Atheists, as well as Catholics who can laugh at themselves, and who can appreciate a reminder of what's behind the (often empty) ritual of Confession, love this kind of stuff. quote: We can misinterpret your cartoon if you can misintepret religious practices.
Correction: Now that you've admitted to misinterpreting my cartoon, you can admit to misinterpreting the institution of Confession, which accounted for your misinterpretation of the cartoon in the first place. I'm not misinterpreting anything. The fact that Confession is misinterpreted in the cartoon is intentional, and intended to reflect the misinterpreting of it by Catholics like yourself all over the world (not all Catholics, but most). Again, that's the joke. I think Confession is a beautiful practice, when it is properly understood. Likewise, the words of Christ, which I quoted in the comic, are beautiful, when correctly understood. Both Christ's words and the institution of Confession are misinterpreted by the crowd, not by the cartoonist. quote: But posting this and coming back with your remarks demeaning others IS a good way to attempt to bait others into an argument and stir up more trouble at LL, HSC. Which is really what you do best.
Jesus was pretty good at baiting others into arguments and stirring up trouble too, eh Mirandee? Come to think of it, anyone who is different and outspoken tends to bait others into arguments and stir up trouble. Not on purpose, but just by being different. But let's face it. We are both itching for a debate, Mirandee. The only difference between me and you and Solane Star is that you both go about it in underhanded ways, and try to make it look like you are all love and light. I very openly and honestly tell you my reactions, without disguising my opposition behind double-entendres and synthetic, overly-enthusiastic praise of anyone or anything that puts a stumbling block in your path. Or by telling you to "drop it" or "let it go" (Solane), when you know it takes two, only to go on applauding the people who wont let it go, provided they agree with you (Solane). You bait me to bring it out into the open, and when I take the bait you sit back and try to make it look like its all me. Its a strategy you never get tired of, and it works fairly well - at least, it fools everyone who can't read between the lines. And if fooling them, or yourselves, is what you are after, you are doing great. But you don't fool me. quote: That's something I think we all get.
You need to stop taking it upon yourself to speak for everyone else, Mirandee. Especially when you know you are 100% wrong. Also, your matriarchal authoritarian role needs to go, too; we dont need you telling us when the matter is at an end - coincidentally, always after you have had the last word, lol.
