I'm going to start teaching a music and rhythm class for kids and teens this fall at my local arts center, and I was wondering if those of you with children out there could answer a few questions for me.

I've never taught kids under HS age before, so I was wondering...what kinds of music do the 7-12 year olds listen to nowadays? At what age are they growing out of the Sponge Bob type stuff? I don't want to use Row, Row, Row Your Boat type songs to illustrate something if I could use something more modern that they can relate to.

Thanks!

They are very savy these days, Isis. Have you heard of Kids Bop? They have them at Taget and Walmart. They are Pop songs for younger kids. (with out the sexual overtones and curse words) I used those CDS with my school agers all the time.

Hi Isis ~

My 11yo son noodles around on his electronic keyboards playing classical. He listens to his mother's classic rock. He listens to his Grandma's Broadway musicals. He loves my Gordon Lightfoot cd's (especially "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald")

Because he played the trumpet for a year, his favorites right now are jazz and classical. He can pick out movie themes on the keyboard (Pink Panther, Star Wars, etc) -- Sponge Bob has been long gone

Good Luck -- you'll have a blast!!

Isis~

The taste of a 7 year od is going to be very different than a 11-12 yr old, specially if the 11-12 yr old is attending middle school already.

I have two boys, 12 and 10 yrs old.

Both of them listen to some rap (male friends) some girl music (beyonce, black eye peas, furgie...and whatever their names are from girl friends)
But they also listen to rock, classic rock and that comes from me because I am a big music freak as well.

None of my kids listen to the kind of music that is meant for a 7-8 and under yr old (like Disney, Sponguebob etc) They quit that long time ago.

I hope this helped!

If I was you I would introduce some percussion style music (no lyrics) and some classical as well as some radio music.

Judging from my 4 grand daughters in that age range, I definity agree with Bluemoon, Kids Bop! Also Kelly Clarkston, Ally & AJ, the Jonus Brothers, Hanna Montana, Jesse McCartney, Drake Bell and The Naked Brother's Band.

Just to explain the last one to those who don't know, the name has nothing to do with nudity. It is two brothers who started out very young. Once in the beginning of their rise to popularity with kids one of the brother's pants fell down on stage. So they called theirselves Naked Brothers after that. They now make movies and have specials on the Disney Channel.

You can listen to Disney Radio, it's 910 on your AM dial and you will hear the most popular songs of kids in that age range. My grand daughters listen to that station all the time. It's also on one of the music channels of cable televison.

I think it depends on the child and what type of music they are being exposed to at home.

My daughter's first c.d. was Blondie. Now she's really into the White Stripes, Wilco, The Pixies and Johnny Cash.

My daughter was on a Jolene (White Stripes version) kick forever.

You can turn those young minds onto lots of new music they may have never heard before.

Sounds like fun Good luck.

Edit: Wait...I almost forgot... she does like Hanna Montana.
