Today was a perfect golden autumn day here in the midwest USA. My favorite time of year. And I just ran across this quote on another site:

"Delicious autumn! My very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird (Skyhawk!) I would fly about the earth seeking the successive autumns." ---George Eliot

Many of you Knowflakes are so talented at posting fabulous graphics. Got any great autumn pix? Thanks in advance.

Each fall, the students in fourth grade visit the Ft. Washington State Park to spend a day outdoors. We call it Writing/Sketching/Science Day. The experience of being outside on a crisp autumn day is designed to inspire our students to write poetry. The poems below reflect the feelings and thoughts the children have about the season. You might notice that some poems contain similes, metaphors, personification, and interesting, descriptive language that helps the reader see and feel the spirit of autumn.

Poem of a Fallen Leaf
by Michelle S
November 3, 2004
------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am a golden leaf,
I just fell of a tree,
There are many things,
That have changed around me.
The weather has gone from,
Warm sunny days,
To cold fall nights.
The tree that I was born on,
Has lost its bright clothing,
The leaves,I have grown with
Have turned the colors of a sunrise.
They are still eye catching,
But they have changed so much.
I loved the summer, but it has gone,
Fall has come now,
With all it's beauty,
With all it's glory.

Fall
By Melanie T.

November 10, 2004
------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am a twig. I see leaves and grass beneath me. I see the sun up high in the sky. Leaves hang off of me. I almost float but I'm connected to a big trunk. The birds fly higher then me. I live with other twigs they tell me to bundle up because it is going to be cold. I will soon see frost on the ground below me. I will be cold when leaves start falling off me. I will be as cold as an ice cube. I am a twig. FALL.

Acorn

Acorn
Oh no! Oh dear! I am the acorn of the oak tree
and the squirrel is coming over to me! Before he gets me and takes me away, I will tell you a few
things about me. I come from a tree and I can grow into a tree. I am not having such a good day because I fell from the tree and now the squirrel is getting closer to me. All of my friends have caps just like me. I think the cap is to keep the rain off our heads. When I was up in the tree, the leaves were very nice to me. They kept me cool on hot summer days. Their colors were magnificent, magenta, gold and fuchsia too. Now I have to go because the squ.....

Fall is All Around Me
by Talia R
November 3, 2004

Red Green Orange Purple Brown
all the leaves fall down down down.
The children are always having fun
running playing in the sun.
Birds fly away for their winter home
the beautiful waters start to foam.
A blanket of frost covers the grass
freezing all that dare to pass.

Periwinkle Cloud
by Megan M.
November 3, 2004
---------------------------------------------------------------
Periwinkle Cloud
I am a periwinkle cloud
Up high in the sky like a plane
I float like I am so comfortable
But I am not
I get pushed around by the wind all day
It is not fun
I always know when it is fall
I see all the kids playing in the falling leaves
It is so pretty
All the colors like gold and ochre make me happy
But in the fall I get a cold feeling
Like I am a freezer freezing ice
I get so heavy but try not to let it go in the fall
I love the fall so much but…
Iam only a periwinkle cloud

The Maple Tree
by Varun K
November 3, 2004
------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am a sugar maple tree
In the summer you can see I'm lime green; and
In the fall I'm a different story.
My leaves turn mahogany and maroon that
You only see once a year, you know.
The air that you feel becomes oh! So very chilly
Just like being in a refrigerator
So, my leaves stay no more
I become as bare as a skeleton.
I hear my leaves on the ground when you step on them
After a summer of warmth, it feels good
With a nice fall breeze

myfriendinspirit! The slide show was wonderful! Thank you. And I especially liked the 2nd graphic on your reply with the shimmering water.

Solane Star, you're such a wizard. I agree. The dragonfly picture is delicious. But your real beauties were the contributions from the 4th graders! Now I would prefer not to show favoritism, but the one about the acorn and squirrel gave me the happiest belly laugh I've had in a long time! Thank you so much for sharing those.

Y'all have filled me to the brim with beauty. I shall sleep like a baby tonight. Oops. I mean this morning. I'm sure you've noticed I'm night owl. As are some of you!

Happy Autumn! Or Spring if you're down under!

This has been so peaceful "walking through the woods" with you guys. I can't express how much I love this time of year.

This one should have been titled "Beautiful Autumn".

The Squirrel
by Erin P
November 3, 2004
------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am a squirrel hunting for food. Scamper, scamper all over the ground. Oh no! I hear a bear coming here he is, dodge right now left now hurry scurry do anything OOWW! He's got my tail he lifts up his foot to squash me, but I run away. OOF! I stumble on a big black rock and fall on the grass. Now that I'm up close I realize that the grass is no longer it's emerald color but has become a dull brown and is as rough as a trees bark. That only means one thing winter is very close! I become frantic I don't have enough acorns! Then I remembered the great oak tree it always has many acorns. I put up my nose and sniff the air I smell millions no billions of acorns, I go towards the smell yes I have found it. I picked one up and tasted it, it was the best I had ever had. I gathered many and scampered back to my whole in the red maple tree and got inside just as the first snowflake fell to the ground.

Pumpkin
by Devin C.
November 3, 2004
------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm orange if I'm ready but green if I'm not.
I can be happy, mad or sad
depending on how you make me.
I can feel the intense flame deep down within me.
The holes that make my face
glow out like the stars.
What am I ?

Fall
by david o
November 3, 2004
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fall Poem
David O.
I am an acorn
As I look up I see the sky
The sky is white and blue that morning
It had some red too
I see my friends the leaves
My friends are very colorful
Like green, yellow, gold and also brown
The days are getting colder
The wind is striking hard like lightening
I am afraid that I might blow away
My friends at school told me to watch out for squirrels
It's getting colder
I think I may need a colorful leaf to be my jacket
What will be do without the colors of fall
I love spending time by the warm hot fire with my acorn family
I will miss the colorful and beautiful mornings
I love fall!

The Wonders of Fall
by catherine p
November 3, 2004
------------------------------------------------------------------

Fall is such a colorful season
Leaves of chocolate brown, tangerine orange, banana yellow, and lollipop red.
You can almost taste them
And feel the crisp air blowing in your face.
The sound of children making footsteps.
Crackling, crinkling, crushing leaves.
Fall is like a kaleidoscope fading to winter white.
