Seems like the same theme has been popping up way too many times these days; "He is way too pretty," or "He is way too gorgeous; I don't wanna go out with him." Or with guys its usually; "He is definately gay."

No ppl a Meterosexual is not gay and though he may come off as androgynous sometimes, these guys are all men . Its just ironic that most women who don't like to be segrigated on their looks end up tagging these guys as "way too unmanly." I am tellin ya this world is filled with contradictions Lol!

So a little article to read on the subject:
http://ca.askmen.com/fashion/austin_100/102_fashion_style.html

quote:
what is a metrosexual?The newly popular media and marketing buzzword seems to mean different things to different people, but in general, a metrosexual :

- is a modern, usually single man in touch with himself and his feminine side;

- grooms and buffs his head and body, which he drapes in fashionable clothing both at work or before hitting an evening hotspot;

- has discretionary income to stay up to date with the latest hairstyles, the newest threads, and the right shaped shoes;

- confuses some guys when it comes to his sexuality;

- makes these same guys jealous of his success with the ladies -- for many metros, to interact with women is to flirt;

- impresses the women who enjoy his company with the details that make the man;

Perhaps fashion and all is coming round full circle.
Men used to wear the frilly clothes, the jewelry, the makeup, up until about 1800 or so.
To say a man is automatically gay or bi because he is a Metrosexual is
as silly as saying women who wear pants and or do not shave or wear makeup are all lesbians!
Or the crap that blue is for males, pink for females!
Or the color white good and the color black evil!
Ridiculous!

It's really a matter of personal taste isn't it? Many women say that about these types of guys only because they prefer the more rugged look in their man.

When it comes to preferences in personal appearance or what attracts - women have their preferences and so do men.

Different strokes for different folks will always apply.

Who came up with the term Meterosexual? The same Madison Avenue ad people who have over half the population of women in the world getting breast implants and looking like emaciated Barbie dolls? I guess now they want men to look like Ken. Trouble with that is that Ken always got tossed over in the corner. Just ask any of us ladies who played with the Barbie dolls. LOL

Yes, It is surely a matter of personal preference... Those with good taste and those without, LOL!

No, really...
It has actually been produced by Mass marketing in order to sell products to a demographic priorly untapped. Men are being suckered into this trap! Notice how the young, easily influenced teenaged boys are are leading the path with this one?

Reality check people... Times are changin'

ESPN Nothing sexy about metrosexuals
Excerpts: Recent TV depictions of the American male have him going from brawny to scrawny. I would venture to say that our culture is in dire need of an injection of testosterone - not Botox.

David Hyde who played Niles on Frasier
clearly depicts the "METROSEXUAL" mold with this charactor.

While George Clooney Fits the "MANLY MAN" mold

The choice seems pretty clear cut to me...
and Yes, even my three year old daughter throws Ken to the corner to play with GI Joe, and the like.

Xodian, Thank you for posting this topic it gave me the inclination to look up pictures of George Clooney... Always a delight!

I dunno'. I think it really depends on how far you take the idea of "metro".

I mean, are they just going to the gym to be healthy or are they obsessed with their looks? Do they groom themselves appropriately or spend more time in front of a mirror than I do? Do they choose flattering clothes or concern themselves with trends and labels?

After a point, metrosexual becomes high-maintenance ... and the same goes for women who can't "live" without a weekly manicure/pedicuare/style at the salon. (Note: I don't mean women whose hair requires more care than others.)

Moderation. For men and women.

Frankly, George Clooney isn't all that "macho". No celebrity (barring some of the less well kempt musicians) is. If a guy wears make-up, it's just not "macho".

Look around at the average man. Overweight (even if a little), unkempt, bad hair, body odor, and frumpily dressed. I'm not trying to be insulting but unless they're getting dressed to "go out" (which translates into temporarily grooming enough to find a mate) most men need to take better care of their bodies.

And it's about time. Do you realize how much time, effort and even money women spend on their looks and health? And I'm not talking the celebrities. Shaving, waxing, exfoliating, moisturizing, doing something with your hair, etc. We may think it's just routine (and have it down to a science to do it all so "quickly" that we don't even think about it most times) but it's a huge contrast to the amount of time and care most men put into their bodies.

The most rugged and macho guy I've ever known was HOT. You'd never think he put any effort to it. But after visiting his home with some friends and using his restroom ... yeah. There was the Men's Health magazine ... the lotion, the gel and pomade, the cologne, the whiten your smile toothpaste, etc. He was always well dressed for his body type even if his clothes wasn't going to win the "best dressed" award at the Oscars. And he made it a point to exercise ... which for him meant hiking regularly, weights at home, boating, fishing, etc. To look at him without knowing his habits, you'd think he was some sort of genetically blessed cowboy.

But every "look" takes effort, even if it's just expanding on who you are. Unless you're a slob. That's pretty easy ... and obvious.

PS Did you know David Hyde Pierce actually is a homosexual? His character Niles, imo, isn't so much a metrosexual as an extreme satire of the wealthy, sex starved and nuerotic intellectual. But even so, I think he's handsome. If I had to choose between a heterosexual version of him and a "macho" grunge monster, I'd choose DHP hands down. Wine or beer? Seriously.

I'll take an intellectual cognac man over a beer guzzling cowboy any day! The machos I have encountered are rarely as macho as they think they are. They are often so paranoid of ever being anything but macho that it becomes just as much a big act as the other extreme, the drag queen. Maybe that is also why so many machos are homophobes. I think they are actually afraid of gays.
Yes..DHP is cute. Clooney does not come across all that super macho either in my opinion.
And Johnny Depp is not all macho either yet lots of women go for him. David Bowie too.
Even The Rock and Vin Diesel have their nice softness. And Stalone with his gentle doe eyes...
Bruce Wills and his boyish smile...Harrison Ford...
Well..........

Whoa! Quite a bit of replying to do:

Mirandee:

Sure its about personal preference but the responses sometimes come off as a more hypocritical state of being then anything else. I mean, if a gal doesn't want to date a guy just because he might just naturally be a tad more... pretty; Shouldn't gals don't care if a guy chooses to date more slender women over those who are a bit more voluptous? The problem is, you get a whole slew of responses back at those men who are a bit more choosy on who they date based upon looks (pig, chavinist, you name it Lol!)

And could it be that women choose to take Ken out of the picture because he is another pretty face that some how made its way into a woman's fantasy of being "the fairest of them all?" Think about that one .

YFIS:

Those articles are so one-sided its not even funny; Particularly when they mention that Meterosexuals are walking marketing gimicks. Well I am not even gonna begin as to how many ads are directed towards the whole macho image; (Ford trucks would be a start Lol!)

And thus we come to our next problem with meterosexuality and what its precieved to be; Since when did being a meterosexual ment you were any less manly? You mentioned George Clooney as being the total macho man when in truth he is quite the metrosexual. And do I even need to begin about the toughness of Brad Pitt's character in fight club? Yet he looks like a model straight out of those Hugo Boss adverts Lol!

Eleanore:

Eleanore, Eleanore, Eleanore... Gotta say, you have yet to post something up that doesn't sees both sides of the situation. I couldn't agree more with your response.

BTW: Just out of curiosity; Is the whole Victorian style fashion still popular with the Japanese girls? Last time I heard they liked to prep themselves up like Victorian dolls or something Lol!

YFIS: THANK YOU for that pic of George Clooney. I just melted, lol!!!

My fella is a Metrosexual. He panics when he runs out of hair gel and never has dirt under his nails, which is all good!!! It starts to be pain when he puts baby wipes by the side of the bed before playtime! Sometimes you just think "get down and dirty, you bugger!!!"

TOO much information - sorry!!!

Thanks, Xodian. I always look forward to your topics.

Actually, yes. Victorian doll-type dress is quite popular among the girls and so is 80's "high fashion" ... and strangely enough, 80's doesn't look bad on them at all. I've always thought the 80's should just be removed from anything archival regarding fashion but not so in Japan.

It's always a treat to head out and see just how expressive the youth here dress. And they go all out. There's no "dressing up" only for special occassions. [Their special occassions, like religious festivals, generally lean toward more traditional (and quite lavish and beautiful) clothes.] They always dress up even if not everyone would consider all of it "nice". Even the males are very fashionable. And I had to laugh when I read about metrosexuals here because if you'd look into some of the male bar "hosts" in Osaka you'd be floored!

If you're interested in the doll fashions, though, you should really look into the girls at the Cosplay Cafes in the Akihabara district of Tokyo. With an "Otaku" husband, it's definitely on our places-to-visit list.

Also, Harajuku style is proving to be very popular throughout Japan.

I'm so often tempted to just start taking pictures of people left and right but that's highly frowned upon. Maybe if they inadvertently make it into one of my landscape or landmark photos ... hmm, yes ....

Get a haircut ya girly man.

Wow you bought those jeans pre-ripped? That's fabulous.

Prettier than ur girlfriend? Maybe you should just date a man.

Personally I have a great deal of empathy for today's man. It can be a no win situation. And who designed it? Women. Who supports the mixed messages? The media. Who takes these images to heart? The unevolved, and those who need celebrity spin doctors to help them form their own opinions. *edit i.e. those who subscribe to People Magazine and the National Star etc...

Elenore:

Oh there is quite the talk here about Japanese youth and their Styles; Specifically how it has caught onto mainstream life here in Canada as well. Lol! Having an Asian background girlfriend myself I have to say that nohting looks bad on these folks. Though I still didn't know that the Victorian craze with the youth group in japan was still popular. Last time I head, the whole Hip Hop senerio was catching on Lol!

And thaks for the links .

Acoustic:

Alright, Alright, hate is a strong word. How about discriminate? LOL! Its just a discussion. Keeping it civil.

AG and BR

taurus/gemini cusp LOL!!! Too funny.

I agree with Eleanore. Moderation for men and women.

Be yourself. Be real. Dress for yourself. Don't let ad men and corporations foist any kind of image onto you just to make a profit. What is inside a person should be what we spend most of our time working on. Not the outside. What we truly are as people inwardly is what makes us beautiful outwardly.

I think it's odd these days that at the same time the media is foisting more effeminate images of men on us, they are foisting more masculine images of women on us in the form of the athletic, tom boy types. If I were you guys I would be real suspicious of that.

Looks don't last. Illness, age, accidents can take away our looks in a heartbeat or over time. What is inside is eternal.

Personally, I thought this whole topic was a bit dramatic. The plight of the Metrosexual? Do Metrosexuals really need an activist campaign to help them out with discrimination, and being seen as too pretty?

Of course, I don't know what life is like up there in Hockey country. Maybe it is bad. It's not an issue where I live.

*Shakes head* Why is it that every other thread that comes across as defending one view point ends up being labled an "Activist" thread?

Remember I am not here to force compliance on behalf of Carnivores to be turned into Vegitarians Lol! Just that the issue seemed quite rampant from quite a bit of responses I had seen across the forum and I thought "Why not present a different view on the subject."

Ergo, we have this thread. Sure beats the heck out of creating another game thread .

EDIT:

Mirandee; LOL! Since when has ever anyone been not influenced by adverts at all. Don't women buy truck load of shoes? I have known incidences actually watch the oscars for style ideas Lol! (which IMO isn't so outragoues.)

I don't know what to say. I don't think you need to fish for me...
but on the other hand, if you did, you might find all those threads started recently by women about all these attractive men that they like. I think at least a portion of those men might fit your desire for women to be into Metrosexuals... which is the point.

It's a matter of taste, and it's not a big deal. If a woman wants a gruff, unkept man, that's her prerogative. It she wants a super hygienic man, that's her prerogative, too. Either way the message is the same: Women want men who can be themselves. It's not about "Metrosexuals".

Sorry for interupting your thread.

But see here is the thing with the situation; I were to to likely ask the same women about their preception of men wanting to be around slimmer or more "model-esque" ladies over the previeced average girl, you'll most likely get a whole slew of responses such as "Men only go for Boobies!" or "Men are Pigs!"

So I put forth an interesting senerio; I wanted to see how many girls actually do follow up on their own philosophy of not judging a book by its cover .

And well so far quite a few ladies actually do follow up on their own advice Lol!
