Wow! Just started listening to them and they kick ass. "For Want Of" is incredible! Can't believe this came out in 1985.

Not sure how much you know since you just discovered them, but two of RoS went on to Fugazi. RoS also were "Happy Go Licky" for a time, which was a surreal version of RoS. HGL only lasted something like a year and never properly recorded, but their live shows were compiled onto a CD you can get here: http://www.dischord.com/band/happygolicky

RoS "For Want Of" live: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wf_ucq-NwTo

HGL: "Cutthroat Island" live: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g4HFfz3jbL4

Today, I was listening to Mission of Burma, and it occured to me that you might like them as well. They were a big influence on Fugazi, Sonic, Youth, REM, Nirvana, etc etc etc.... Another short-lived 80s punk/rock band! "That's When I Reach For My Revolver" (live from their '06 reunion): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gzMu6ugTNfA

Their story is part of a *great* book by Michael Azzerad - Our Band Could Be Your Life, which is about the underground punk/indie scene in American music during the 80's to early 90's. If you like manic energy, you'll like the bands in the book.

MoB is pretty good. Sounds like I'll have to look for that book. I'm asking, what happened to that whole indie/punk movement? Did the explosion of grunge in the early '90s put an end to it?

Requested the book, and found out I'm on a waiting list! There's 3 copies in the libraries branches, and they're all checked out.

I think the best way to sum it up is that the lunatics took over the asylum.

Sonic Youth signed to a major (a lot of people point to that as the official end of the era), and talked their opening act into doing the same (Nirvana). SST Records, home of a lot of those bands, dug themselves into a legal mess by the early 90s and pretty much shut down for the middle of that decade. Quite a few of the SST bands sued for their masters, then turned around and sold them to a major label. Those 80s bands were packaged by labels as "alternative" and by the late 80s they were a big business, not just club money. The commercialization was picked up on quickly for the grunge bands who had been inspired by the punk/post punk bands of the 80s. I don't think grunge killed that music - it was an offshoot, an evolution... but the record companies were ready for the grunge bands, and so the grunge bands didn't have to do the truly indie thing like their predecessors. Also, the information was changing rapidly with more cable channels, more magazines, eventually the internet. It would be hard to have a groundswell now for a band like the Minutemen or Sonic Youth. A lot of the mystery is gone, and people no longer go to clubs like the 9:30 to discover music - they go to MySpace and then dl the songs for free.

Wow astralmuse...you know your music and social scene. While the 'air of mystery' as you put it that surrounded the whole underground scene has disappeared due to a considerable upgrade in media, I am glad the alternative/grunge scene happened in the early 90's considering the cheesy, spandex clad hairbands that were popular beforehand.
Of the bands in 'Bands You Could Live For', which is your fav?

I'm glad grunge happened, too. But I don't believe it "killed the hairbands." Hairbands weren't played on the stations that picked up grunge. Those stations were playing REM and NIN - not Poison. The hairbands were pretty much run out by the end of the 80s, so they weren't staying regardless and I think Trent Reznor had more to do with that than grunge. To me, the real value of grunge was it brought music to a new level of accessibility. And of course record companies were primed and listening to what people were inventing at all levels.

And a fav band from that book? Erlack! Too hard to choose! Black Flag I am sentimental about as I snuck out to see a show on their last tour, but I don't listen to them or Rollins often anymore. I can't imagine a world without Sonic Youth, they were able to make experimentation fashionable. Some of their work has grown along the years, some not. I like the Mats but am not a diehard like most of their fans. Hüsker Dü songs make my heart ache, and as musicians they have always had a lot of integrity (so have Fugazi). So perhaps Hüsker Dü.

That's cool tidalwave. Just finished reading about the Minutemen and their unfortunate demise.
It seems these early indie bands grew up without punk and had hippie parents. This produced very meaningful songs.

hehe, well i think it's awesome that it let them create a new sound.

ever read much about the little rock, arkansas music scene? since it's in the midwest, when punk came around they didn't have any venues to see their shows or record stores to hear their music, so a lot of bands that hail from there created a very unique sound, very individual to each band. it's pretty neat to look into. there's a DVD on it called "towncraft" actually. great film!

Thanks for the info tidalwave. I'll definitely look into that!

So far two friends have heard my 'Rites of Spring' album and the reaction has been the same..."Wow! Who are these guys?" They can't believe it when I tell them it was recorded in 1985.

You're freakin' kidding me!!! I live in Raytown pretty close to the stadiums. Wow, small world indeed. lol 'Misery' isn't bad...except when it's 100 or -20 degrees outside.

List of favs...hmmm kinda hard to list them, but here's a few:

Alice In Chains
Led Zeppelin
Nirvana
Pink Floyd
The Beatles
The Clash
The Pixies

That's off the top of my head. I could continue, but the list would get ridiculously long since I listen to about everything.

Still can't believe you're in KC!

Yea I have myspace. http://www.myspace.com/panzerman78

No, don't know of any astrologers here in KC at least to my knowledge. Yea I've heard of Cape Girardeau though I've never been there. Ever heard of Chillicothe? That's the area I'm originally from.
Nice band list! I'd add more but I need to get ready for school at Longview. (Geology exam today.) Have a good one!

From the samples I've heard, I think Husker Du will be my next album to get. (That will be in the near future though...hehe.)

So tidal, what would top your list on Zeppelin and Beatles albums?

haha topping my list on zep and beatles albums....ALL. i adore aLL of zeppelin's stuff, but i enjoy the beatles later stuff (you know, after they experienced LSD)

oh towncraft is so fantastic! i wish i knew how to illegally burn DVDs, i'd totally send you one! or drop it off as we live so close haha.

some of my fave bands from LR are:

the thing that always explodes
soophie nun squad
blair harris (she's one of my cousin's best friends and so inventive)
magic cropdusters
the chicklettes
ho-hum
the easys
new jazz assassins
trusty

i think a lot of these have myspaces too.

I'm gonna have to check out 'The Magic Cropdusters' simply 'cause I love the name!

Yep, I agree with you on the Beatles. While their early stuff is great, like Beatles '65, I like their post LSD music. I'd have to pick The White Album, because theirs SO much innovation and things happening. With Zeppelin I'm going to pick 'In Through the Outdoor', although 'Babe I'm Gonna Leave You' is my favorite song.
On a side-note my friends and I at UPS used to sing 'Octopus' Garden' and 'Maxwell's Silver Hammer' while loading at UPS!
It's Saturday! Hurrah!
