"A primitive cosmic being of divine-animal nature, on the one hand superior to man because of his superhuman qualities, and on the other hand inferior to him because of his unreason and unconsciousness. The more civilized we become, the more we will blame a "shadow" for our misfortunes. Like the trickster of old, the shadow represents a quality that isn't accepted into the awareness. It can 'pester' us unmercifully but always has a gift for us, a missing quality, an attitude needed to cope, or self-realization."
~ Carl Jung, The Trickster Archetype, Coyote

The trickster is an important archetype in the history of man. He is a god, yet he is not. He is the wise-fool. It is he, through his creations that destroy, points out the flaws in carefully constructed societies of man. He rebels against authority, pokes fun at the overly serious, creates convoluted schemes, that may or may not work, plays with the Laws of the Universe and is sometimes his own worst enemy. He exists to question, to cause us to question not accept things blindly. He appears when a way of thinking becomes outmoded needs to be torn down built anew. He is the Destroyer of Worlds at the same time the savior of us all.

The Trickster lives inside and outside of Time. He is of our world, yet not of our world, so our laws will not always apply. Other symbols, associated with him include keys, clock, masks, infinity among other mythological images

Trickster is a creator, a joker, a truth teller, a story teller, a transformer linked to the spiritual frequency changes humanity is experiencing at this time.

We seem most accessible to the synchronistic gifts of the Trickster when we ourselves are at or near boundaries or are experiencing transition states, periods of major life transitions seem to be occasioned by an abundance of meaningful coincidence. Personal growth sees not only to facilitate synchronicity, but in turn to be facilitated by it. As an archetype, the Trickster, the boundary dweller, finds expression through human imagination and experience...

Trickster is an alchemist. The Shamanic aspect that transforms or evolves... When you allow yourself to be abused, playing the victim, and remain stagnant in your life, the trickster aspect of you is in control... The concept of the Trickster is as much a part of humanity's history as the concept of God. All creational myths deal with polarity, good god vs. bad god, the duality of our nature and with each of us. To be emotionally challenged, is to listen to the voice of the trickster and live in a space of drama and negative emotions. To create balance is to live in the so-called 'god aspect' of who we are.

Physical reality is a game in which the Trickster challenges us at every turn... With his lessons, he awakens us to who we are and allows us to explore the true purpose of our soul's journey in the holographic experience through which we experience consciously at this level of awareness.

His energy allows us to break out of old stereotypes, whether they've been imposed by ourselves, our families, our culture, or circumstance. This is the energy that opens the world of limitless possibilities and it behooves us all to work with it before it destroys us, to touch the Trickster as he touches us.

Trickster is a teacher, survivor, hero, always traveling, outrageous and cunning, foolish and wise, mischievous and often doing good despite himself. He is a metaphor for the evolution of consciousness in the alchemy of time.

Thought you might like to hear the Medicine Card version of Coyote - Trickster...

quote:
There are thousands of myths and stories about Coyote, the great trickster. Many native cultures call Coyote the "Medicine Dog." If you have pulled this card, you can be sure that some kind of medicine is on it's way - and it may or may not be to your liking. Whatever the medicine is, good or bad, you can be sure it will make you laugh, maybe even painfully. You can also be sure that Coyote will teach you a lesson about yourself.

Coyote has many magical powers, but they do not always work in his favor. His own trickery fools him. He is the master trickster who tricks himself. No one is more astonished than Coyote at the outcome of his own tricks. He falls into his own trap. And yet he somehow manages to survive. He may be banged and bruised by the experience, but he soon goes on his way to even greater error, forgetting to learn from hi mistakes. He may have lost the battle, but he is never beaten.

Coyote is sacred. In the folly of his acts we see our own foolishness. As Coyote moves from one disaster to the next, he refines the art of self-sabotage to sheer perfection. No one can blindly do themselves or others in with more grace and ease than this holy trickster. Coyote takes himself so seriously at times that he cannot see the obvious; for example, the steamroller that is about to run over him. That is why, when it hits him, he still cannot believe it. "Was that really a steamroller? I better go look," he says. And he is run over once more.

Contained within trickster medicine is the humor of the ages. The cosmic joke is not just on ourselves but on everyone else, if they are following Coyote or have strong Coyote medicine. Someone like this may be able to convince others that a skunk smells like roses, but the fact remains that it is still a skunk.

Snooze time is over if you have pulled the Coyote medicine card. Watch out! Your glass house may crash to the ground at any moment. All your self-mirrors may shatter. The divine trickster is dogging you, and you may trip. Coyote scratches under his arm. He does a crazy dance. He catches his tail on fire playing with matches. He jumps in the fishpond to save himself and nearly drowns. Coyote seduces a concrete statue. Coyote thinks he has found a bone, but it is a rattlesnake. Everyone watches the comedic scene. Coyote is you, me, booby traps, jet airplanes with toilets that don't work, blind dates, and all the humorous and whimsical things we encounter along life's way. Get ready for more laughs - lots more.

Go immediately beneath the surface of your experiences. Ask yourself what you are really doing and why. Is Coyote your medicine? Are you playing jokes on yourself? Are you trying to fool an adversary? Is someone tricking you? Do you want to give the office "geek" the phone number of the beautiful new secretary? Or do you want to pull a boner on your best friend? When was the last time you did something just because it was crazy and fun?

On the other hand, you may not be conscious of your own pathway of foolishness. You may have conned yourself, your family, your friends, or even the public at large into believing that you know what you are doing. But listen, Coyote. You are balled up in your own machinations. You have created a befuddling, bewildering, confounding trick. Pick up the juggler eyes from the ground and put them back into their sockets. See through the genius of your acts of self-sabotage. Find it amusing and laugh, trickster, laugh.

If you can't laugh at yourself and your crazy antics, you have lost the game. Coyote always comes calling with things get too serious. The medicine is laughter and joking so that new viewpoints may be assumed.

If you have Coyote medicine, you may use it to make stuffy old fogies lighten up, to add cheer to a party, or to break a "death-grip conversation" with ease. Look at the positive side of sabotaging nosey questions about your personal life. Have fun telling some gossiper that you just returned from St. Tropez in your new Lear Jet!

Our view of life
Is our perception of it.

There is no such thing
as "normality" or "sanity"-
Only our perception OF it.

The Trickster is also the FOOL in the Tarot Card Deck and the Fool is the 0 Card, First in the deck. Meaning the 0 also stands for the Serpent Eating it's own tail, Symbol of Scorpio!!! Funny how that all fits together!!! LOL!!!

Nice!!!

thanks, Solane.

I think its a very important archetype.

The Fool is not just the first,
but also the last card,
and, not only that,
the entire Tarot deck is "The Fool's Journey".
The Fool is in every scene, or,
you might say, in between every scene.

I had a reading a couple months ago from a very good reader.

There is a deck she always brings with her,
drawn by the guy who designed the creatures in Labrynth,
and then, she has an oversized Crowley Thoth deck,
from which she brings one or two cards.

She asks the Thoth deck, which card or cards to bring,
and, for me, the deck replied, "Bring the whole deck".

Who but the Fool would need,
and relate to, the whole deck?

My therapist, who I'm very close to,
is a Wiccan Priestess who uses the deck a lot,
and the first time she met me she said
I reminded her of The Fool.
She's mentioned it a few times since,
and I see the fool a lot,
in everyday instances of synchronicity.

I think Taoism is very "Foolish".

The "Zero Point Energy", for instance.

And I've always been fascinated by
the "holy fools" in Tolstoy and Dosteovski's books.

I love this poem by Rumi:

Who makes these changes?
I shoot to the right the arrow lands left
ride after a deer and find myself
chased by a hog
I plot to get what I want and end up in jail
dig pits to trap others and I fall in
I should be suspicious of what I want

And this song:

"And whosoever diggeth a pit
Shall fall in it, fall in it
And whosoever diggeth a pit
Shall fall in it (... fall in it)"

~ Bob Marley "Small Axe"
(quoting Proverbs and Ecclesiastes)

Fool - Clown - Trickster
Tony Crisp

In several cultures the fool appears under the guise of idiot, trickster, harlequin, clown or jester. In the Japanese story Monkey this character is portrayed as Pig; in Britain it is Reynard the Fox, and in the USA Brer Rabbit and Coyote. Charlie Chaplin is a world image in modern times of this crazy, unpredictable yet wise clown.

Jung puts all these figures under the name of Trickster, who he says represents the earliest and least developed period of life - or the least developed side of our personality. According to Jung, Pig, like Trickster is a figure whose physical appetites and senses dominate his actions and decisions. His thinking does not rise above his belly or his genitals. Not understanding finer feelings, his responses to other people appear crude, self-centred, cynical and unfeeling. In some of the stories however, the difficulties of his exploits gradually bring about a transformation and he becomes a man instead of an animal.

North American Indian Trickster

Trickster delights in all sorts of pranks mischief and jokes. James Lewis, in his book The Dream Encyclopaedia, says that Trickster is not by nature evil, even though the results of his activities are often unpleasant. These activities centre around bringing attention to our own or other peoples often hidden stupidity, shams or lies. He is also the unexpected spontaneous idiot aspect of life which for no reason at all emerges into our carefully arranged life to upset it. Trickster is a shape shifter and so has the possibility of transformation.

The undeveloped, idiot side of this symbol may have a type of clear-sightedness due to lacking the complications and contradictions of thinking and intellectual values. It also may be creative in a serendipitous sort of way. Because it doesnt seriously hold onto a purpose or idea, this side of our nature may lead us to something new, a change of direction. In some dreams the fool is a figure who is sacrificed.

The fool or clown is also about the ability to either laugh at the ridiculousness of life, or to cut through the social shams and reveal our hypocrisy in an acceptable way. This makes the fool or clown wise, because they can see through who we are and what people do. Their talent is to reveal such things to us.

But the clown has another aspect which is as a man usually the clown is male of sorrows. He leads us to tears as often as he leads us to laughter. This is because the clown shows us the wonderful and tragic human feelings underlying the masks we might wear in daily life. Love, life, loss, success and failure, all have their deeply human side and the clown reveals such things to us.

Carline Myss points out that another aspect of the clown is the simpleminded character who is wise in their innocence. Such a character is involved within us in many of our life activities, and brings a gentle kindness to what is lived or felt.

The negative side of the clown archetype is that knowing human drives and urges, the vulnerable underbelly of human life so well, the clown can manipulate, reveal what is hurtful or torture.

Useful questions are:

Does the part of me that pokes at other peoples weaknesses or vulnerabilities do so caringly or hurtfully?

What is my trickster/clown revealing to me about myself?

Is there still a crude undeveloped side of my nature that I am not very aware of?

The continued mutual mistrust between Mirandee/Solane and Fayte. The cycle keeps repeating, and both sides blame the other side. I think most people are/were hoping for a transformation of the relationship back into being harmonious, but I'm growing pessimistic about the results in the short term. Long term I know all involved are deeply loving, caring individuals who wouldn't wish any sort of burden on one another.
