The whole idea of homophobia is so ludicrous to me.
Why? Homophobia is quite real. The idea is ludicrous but many folks are homophobic up to and including deadly in their actions against gay folks.

You Are 45% Homophobic

You're definitely somewhat homophobic. You don't feel comfortable around gay people.
Stop living in the 20th century - and get yourself some gay friends.

I'm not saying homophobia isn't real Lexx I agree that you could replace gay with any group there, and it would sound appalling. I suppose to some people it does not sound appalling to have gay there, because they are still subject to the popular homophobia present in the US today.

I'm saying its appalling to me that anyone would be afraid/hateful towards anyone based on gender, sexual orientation, race, country of origin, religion, or age.

Gay and black are different things. But the hate and prejudice that both groups have received are quite similar. Hate is hate. Ironically, the black community has one of the highest rates of homophobia of any racial group. It is this homophobia that sociologists relate to the much higher rate of HIV infection in the black community (in the US). THe logic behind this is that homosexual male members of the community are not out of the closet, because they do not openly practice gay sex, they are less likely to use protection, and more likely to have sex with male and female partners.

It is undeniably obvious that being born black is genetic, based on the race of your parents.

It is not undeniably obvious that being born gay is genetic or biological, but increasing evidence shows that it is biological. If it weren't, why would there be homosexuals in other animal species? Does a monkey, a goat, a penguin, choose to be gay? Do they like the night life and high fashion?

Technically, human beings are animals.

We are primates, homo sapiens.

Lots of people do have sex with their siblings and relatives, in some cultures it is not considered taboo.

Consider how many behaviors you have in common with animals. Do you not eat, socialize, drink, and excrete?

What is it that makes you a human being?

Bipolun, may I take by your logic that you consider homosexual acts are animalistic, and are akin to incest?

Here's something!

Unless I'm at an Optometrist's office, if someone demands I "open my eyes" I generally close them fast.
If It's worth seeing, I'd see it (gently) myself.

i would say that someone homophobic is what you call a gay homophobic: if you cant accept yourself as gay when you have tendencies, then the only way to react is by projecting your anger outside, on those who manage to accept themselves (what yourself cannot do)

some people have a problem with people who just accept themselves, why? I WONDER!!!!!

black and gay can mix!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

but the following is just to remind us that physical violence is a real source of anguish when you are gay! THE DANGER IS REAL!!! IT'S NOT AN ABSTRACT CONCEPT.

it's because of it that suicide is FOUR times higher for gay teens compared to straight ones or that 33% of gay youth will attempt suicide sources: Center for Disease Control/Massachusetts Department of Education Youth Risk Behavior Survey (1999)

i just looked for "soft, suggestive" images but i'm sure i could find horrific material such as what happened to matthew shepard!

loads of this happen around the world and there's not much that can be done, except promoting change around yourself! and hoping your friends will educate their friends and so on....

This is what happened to one of our friends!
He is not the only one of our friend's who has been attacked for being gay.
The Power of Hate
Story by Steven Harbaugh

Hate Hits Home

Mikell Nagy transferred away from Kent State University after being attacked at a local restaurant for being gay.
Hate Hits Home...again

Students Dana Widger and Kristin Burge were beaten up at a party. Their attackers were never charged.
Hate: Not Protected

Ohio does not include sexual orientation in its hate crime statutes.
Hate: Not Reported

Hate crimes may not be reported due to a number of factors.

Hate hits home

Story by Steven Harbaugh
Photos by Samara Peddle

The last thing Mikell Nagy recalls one evening in late April 2001 was someone putting a hand on his chest in the middle of a Denny’s restaurant.

“I hit the floor, and the next thing I remember, I’m back in my apartment,” he says.

On that evening, Nagy had gone with several friends to Denny’s on East Main Street in Kent after going out to the Interbelt Nite Club, a predominantly gay dance club in Akron. The friends were waiting for a table in the lobby area of the restaurant. Nagy heard a group of men from a nearby table refer to him as a “faggot.” Nagy went over to confront the men about the slur, and words were exchanged.

Nagy said one of the men, Brian Lydick of Ravenna, punched him, bruised his face and chipped one of his teeth.

Shortly after the incident, Nagy transferred to Cleveland State University.

Nagy, a former president of PRIDE! Kent and vice president of Delta Lambda Phi, had been an active gay rights advocate during his time at Kent State.

Nagy moved to Cleveland after the incident and currently is employed as the program coordinator for ManHealth, a health-oriented program for gay men in the Cleveland area, run through the Cleveland AIDS TaskForce.

“The hate crime was a major deciding factor for me to leave,” he explains. “For me, ‘Kent’ and ‘gay-bashing’ are synonymous.”

Nagy says he is still an advocate for hate crime legislation that includes sexual orientation.

Mikell Nagy moved to Cleveland State University following his attack.

"The way the current system stands is that it’s OK to beat up gay people because you won’t face the same penalty as beating up an African American or a Latino,” he says.

Lydick pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor assault charge. He was charged $200 and spent 10 days in county jail.

Lydick’s attorney, Jerry Goodwin, says witnesses testified that Nagy spent that evening at Denny’s taunting Lydick and his tablemates with obscenities.

Nagy filed a lawsuit asking for $25,000 in compensation from Denny’s a year after the incident because no security was present at the time of the incident. He was never awarded the money, but he says the situation is finally behind him.

“When my story first happened and it was getting a lot of media attention, I had a lot of people coming up to me, telling me their stories about being victims of hate crimes,” he says. “Legally, Cleveland isn’t all that friendly, but I can walk down the street and hold my lover’s hand.”

ok some humor now, and some serious thinking too. i need to come down!

one just for bipolun (black and gay is different indeed):
I'd rather be black than gay because when you're black you don't have to tell your mother.
~Charles Pierce, 1980

If gay and lesbian people are given civil rights, then everyone will want them!
~Author unknown, as seen on a button at evolvefish.com

"The Bible contains six admonishments to homosexuals and 362 admonishments to heterosexuals. That doesn't mean that God doesn't love heterosexuals. It's just that they need more supervision."
~Lynn Lavner

Why is it that, as a culture, we are more comfortable seeing two men holding guns than holding hands?
~Ernest Gaines

Homosexuality is god's way of insuring that the truly gifted aren't burdened with children.
~Sam Austin

Isn't it a violation of the Georgia sodomy law for the Supreme Court to have its head up its ass?
~Letter to Playboy magazine, February 1987

the funniest:
If homosexuality is a disease, let's all call in queer to work: "Hello. Can't work today, still queer."
~Robin Tyler

special one for jwhop:
War. Rape. Murder. Poverty. Equal rights for gays. Guess which one the Southern Baptist Convention is protesting?
~The Value of Families

My own belief is that there is hardly anyone whose sexual life, if it were broadcast, would not fill the world at large with surprise and horror.
~W. Somerset Maugham

I'm a supporter of gay rights. And not a closet supporter either. From the time I was a kid, I have never been able to understand attacks upon the gay community. There are so many qualities that make up a human being... by the time I get through with all the things that I really admire about people, what they do with their private parts is probably so low on the list that it is irrelevant.
~Paul Newman

I am reminded of a colleague who reiterated "all my homosexual patients are quite sick" - to which I finally replied "so are all my heterosexual patients."
~Ernest van den Haag, psychotherapist

For a long time I thought I wanted to be a nun. Then I realized that what I really wanted to be was a lesbian.
~Mabel Maney

Why can't they have gay people in the army? Personally, I think they are just afraid of a thousand guys with M16s going, "Who'd you call a faggot?"
~John Stewart

One should no more deplore homosexuality than left-handedness.
~Towards a Quaker View of Sex, 1964

It always seemed to me a bit pointless to disapprove of homosexuality. It's like disapproving of rain.
~Francis Maude

There's this illusion that homosexuals have sex and heterosexuals fall in love. That's completely untrue. Everybody wants to be loved.
~Boy George

Straight Americans need... an education of the heart and soul. They must understand - to begin with - how it can feel to spend years denying your own deepest truths, to sit silently through classes, meals, and church services while people you love toss off remarks that brutalize your soul.
~Bruce Bawer, The Advocate, 28 April 1998

What are you trying to protect heterosexual marriages from? There isn't a limited amount of love in Iowa. It isn't a non-renewable resource. If Amy and Barbara or Mike and Steve love each other, it doesn't mean that John and Mary can't.
~Ed Fallon

People sometimes think I'm gay because I once played a gay in a movie. It's funny. Audiences don't think you're a murderer if you play a murderer, but they do think you're gay if you play a gay.
~Perry King

I get sick of listening to straight people complain about, "Well, hey, we don't have a heterosexual-pride day, why do you need a gay-pride day?" I remember when I was a kid I'd always ask my mom: "Why don't we have a Kid's Day? We have a Mother's Day and a Father's Day, but why don't we have a Kid's Day?" My mom would always say, "Every day is Kid's Day." To all those heterosexuals that ***** about gay pride, I say the same thing: Every day is heterosexual-pride day! Can't you people enjoy your banquet and not **** on those of us enjoying our crumbs over here in the corner?
~Rob Nash

In itself, homosexuality is as limiting as heterosexuality: the ideal should be to be capable of loving a woman or a man; either, a human being, without feeling fear, restraint, or obligation.
~Simone de Beauvoir

Bisexuality immediately doubles your chances for a date on Saturday night. ~Woody Allen

Labels? Okay, fine. I'm bisensual. Heteroflexible. And life-curious. That about covers it.
~Morgan Torva

Pronouns make it hard to keep our sexual orientation a secret when our co-workers ask us about our weekend. "I had a great time with... them." Great! Now they don't think you're queer - just a big sl*t !
~Judy Carter

As long as society is anti-gay, then it will seem like being gay is anti-social.
~Joseph Francis

The next time someone asks you, "Hey, howdja get to be a homosexual anyway?" tell them, "Homosexuals are chosen first on talent, then interview... then the swimsuit and evening gown competition pretty much gets rid of the rest of them."
~Karen Williams

If Michelangelo had been straight, the Sistine Chapel would have been wallpapered.
~Robin Tyler

If you removed all of the homosexuals and homosexual influence from what is generally regarded as American culture, you would pretty much be left with "Let's Make a Deal."
~Fran Lebowitz

About a year ago I was a guest on a network news show in New York. They were showing film clips from a gay pride parade down Fifth Avenue, but they only decided to show the part with men in dresses and heels. I had seen the parade, and there were men in business suits as well. After showing the film, the newsperson made some comments, and I found the comments extremely offensive. "This is what's wrong with the media," I said. "You show a fringe position. You show one point of view. You're closing the minds of the people by not showing them what the reality is." I got up and walked out, and I've never been asked back again.
~Kathleen Nolan

If adjustment is necessary, it should be made primarily with regard to the position the homosexual occupies in present-day society, and society should more often be treated than the homosexual.
~Harry Benjamin

If God had wanted me otherwise, He would have created me otherwise.
~Johann von Goethe

An engineering professor is treating her husband, a loan officer, to dinner for finally giving in to her pleas to shave off the scraggly beard he grew on vacation. His favorite restaurant is a casual place where they both feel comfortable in slacks and cotton/polyester-blend golf shirts. But, as always, she wears the gold and pearl pendant he gave her the day her divorce decree was final. They're laughing over their menus because they know he always ends up diving into a giant plate of ribs but she won't be talked into anything more fattening than shrimp.

Quiz: How many biblical prohibitions are they violating? Well, wives are supposed to be 'submissive' to their husbands (I Peter 3:1). And all women are forbidden to teach men (I Timothy 2:12), wear gold or pearls (I Timothy 2:9) or dress in clothing that 'pertains to a man' (Deuteronomy 22:5). Shellfish and pork are definitely out (Leviticus 11:7, 10) as are usury (Deuteronomy 23:19), shaving (Leviticus 19:27) and clothes of more than one fabric (Leviticus 19:19). And since the Bible rarely recognizes divorce, they're committing adultery, which carries the rather harsh penalty of death by stoning (Deuteronomy 22:22).

So why are they having such a good time? Probably because they wouldn't think of worrying about rules that seem absurd, anachronistic or - at best - unrealistic. Yet this same modern-day couple could easily be among the millions of Americans who never hesitate to lean on the Bible to justify their own anti-gay attitudes.
~Deb Price, And Say Hi To Joyce

The Lord is my Shepherd and he knows I'm gay.~Troy Perry

ahhhh english!
- My mother made me a homosexual.
- If I gave her the wool, would she make me one too?

~Graffiti, London, 1978

While many minority groups are the target for prejudice... and discrimination... in our society, few persons face this hostility without the support and acceptance of their family as do many gay, lesbian, and bisexual youth.
~Virginia Uribe and Karen Harbeck

Hateful to me as the gates of Hades is that man who hides one thing in his heart and speaks another.
~Homer

Never be bullied into silence. Never allow yourself to be made a victim. Accept no one's definition of your life; define yourself.
~Harvey Fierstein

There is just one life for each of us: our own.
~Euripides

Every time you don't follow your inner guidance, you feel a loss of energy, loss of power, a sense of spiritual deadness.
~Shakti Gawain

Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.
~Dr. Seuss

Resolve to be thyself; and know that he who finds himself, loses his misery.
~Matthew Arnold, "Self-Dependence," Empedocles on Etna, and Other Poems, 1852

To know what you prefer, instead of humbly saying "Amen" to what the world tells you you ought to prefer, is to keep your soul alive.
~Robert Louis Stevenson

The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe. If you try it, you will be lonely often, and sometimes frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself.

This seemed like such a light-hearted thread, now all I think of when I look at the subject line is the hateful and homophobic speech Oklahoma State Rep. Sally Kern went on.
here it is at youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tFxk7glmMbo

I posted a thread about it in Global Unity.

Homophobia is a really hot topic lately, for a reason.

I"m glad people are bringing it up. Never give up preaching your truth in a peaceful fashion.

Kal, what a hateful, angry, small, woman, very sad

It's interesting that she brings up that gays have a much higher rate of suicide, then goes on to discuss how awful gays are, how they need to stop gay/straight alliances in schools. How can she not see the connection between the suicides and the hate?

You guys are so wierd , you seriosly make me laugh. I never said I hated gay people, why do people always jump to such sad conclusions, maybe you guys are the ones that hate.

I was just saying that being black is not the same as being gay. Atleast be a little bit openminded and see it.

Maybe you guys should take care of your insecurity problems before you go all defensive on everybody.

What ever happened to freedom of speech.

You guys are sad.
