The painting has always been and still remains open to various interpretations. Could it show the transformation of the fearsome god into a lover, as Ovid narrates? Perhaps it shows the couple just before they are caught in Vulcan's net. Or was it just one more work of art commissioned by the ruling family of Florence, the Medici, to celebrate a happy event? And look at Mars. He is disarmed...and has totally succumbed to Venus' love. The myrtle trees - sacred symbol of Venus - in the background, the wasps of the powerful Vespucci family, the child satyr blowing that feminal shell into Mars' ear and those long braids of Venus powerfully protecting with that flower jewel-seal the love she carries in her heart for Mars. And the list goes on... Oh, isn't that exactly what a masterpiece does? Unfolds the petals of your most beautiful soul to show you the infinite grandeur of imagination. For me, that directness of the scene and that heroic nakedness of Mars are breathtaking. As for my interpretation, this will forever be a marriage picture of two immortal lovers in a moment of ultimate trust. I leave you to your interpretation of your infinite imagination...
