The picture is from today's Independent. It describes a garbage patch covering twice the size of the U.S in the Pacific Ocean.

It is made up of a 'plastic soup' - discarded plastic products that are breaking down only very slowly.

I found it quite horrifying.

Fifty year old pieces of plastic...!....

This is going to encourage me to recycle even more. Although the neighbours give me odd looks with the tubs in the back yard, so be it.

Hell's bells.

The Pacific always gets used as a dumping ground. Look at all the nuclear testing that was done by the US in the 50s.

I know people moan about the environmental costs of the recycling process but we may be left with no option before long (btw I'm not even sure if you can break down some synthetics, i.e. resins, effectively).

oh yuck.

In addition to recycling, we've reduced our consumption of packaging etc.
