Very interesting question, Roamer. If caps are an indicator of ego, I may be charged with adding more than is allowed. I'm a big fan of lower-case letters, but I added the last "S" on my handle so I could hold it better. lol Seriously, though, I chose that "S" more for the visual effect that it presents. I tend to look at words and try to see the form that it creates, the outlines it makes, the space it takes up, the space it doesn't, and... ok, whoa. a bit too artsy there. my apologies. such is the nature of the beast within me... cool thread, though! To be more detailed about it, it's important to me and I must admit it drives me crazy when other people don't capitalize their names or bother to capitalize when they type out a post because capitalizing in the expected places actually helps me to read better, faster and with stronger comprehension. I feel it helps people to get their messages across and to tell the truth, I can't always take certain posts seriously when someone doesn't bother to capitalize in the expected places. It makes me think that if the person is too lazy to capitalize, are they also too lazy to research carefully and properly?
God has sent me someone who understands!!!! Glory Hallelujah! Although I do enjoy when lower case is specifically used for style and emphasis. I have a love for written communication so style is important to me. But the new topic seems to be about random crocheting, which sounds positively fascinating and I am sorry I'm going to miss out on... nice to enjoy your fabulousness again, Pix Have fun All! (Noticed I capitalized "All" when using it as a name to lump Everyone together, but did not capitalize "n"ice because I was speaking gently and casually...) hehe

It cuts both ways. I take the time to read badly written posts as there are plenty of reasons for poor English other than laziness. Anyone my age writing from Eastern Europe is likely to have learned Russian as a second language. So they are probably writing in their third language, and one that uses a different alphabet. European languages other than English have different rules of grammar and punctuation (including capitalisation), even if they use the Latin alphabet. English state schools had a policy of not teacing grammar throughout the 60s and 70s, so no, I wasn't taught these basic rules. Plenty of people have had shoddy educations, it's not their fault. Unidentified learning disabilities don't help. I could site a case or two of that sort. Most of all, when struggling to express emotions or ideas, grammar can sometimes go to the wall. Or if you are feeling tired, or upset. The only posts I wouldn't bother reading are text-speak. I assume anyone writing that doesn't want to communicate with someone pushing 40. HunkofRope capitalises his/her name and writes grammatically correct posts. It's still a waste of everyone's time, though. Give me something badly written and heartfelt everytime. IP: Logged |

Oh blue, anyone who is writing in a second language is worth deciphering every time, absolutely! Sometimes more worth deciphering. IP: Logged |

Also, that's why I mentioned that I'm willing to try to read it if it appears that an attempt is being made. You ( or I)can usually tell when someone is having language discrepencies. Also, it depends on the day, my mood, how I'm feeling, tired or awake or healthy. If I'm tired, difficult posts won't be read. Now I feel like I've spent too much time on the subject, we are all so diverse and who knows what motivates our choices from moment to moment. One day I just might give up capitals all together and people will think I'm an imposter. IP: Logged |
