I've become too dependent on the smilies. They're a lovely bunch, and they will always hold a special place in my heart, but I've been there and done that, so onward and upward.I'm going to see how long I can go without using one. I use them in most posts so this will be a challenge of the highest order. The only exception is if I'm replying to posts where the default smiley face would clearly be inappropriate. I'll use a blue heart as the message icon instead. And...begin. Oh aleady I want to put ":" and "D" next to one another. Resist. *puts on her smiley patch* What's your smiley face philosophy? (Surely everyone has one?) Do you use them often? Does their use by others influence your perception of the poster? I wish I could blame my interest in this on lack of sleep, but I've wondered about this even when fully rested. So I'm always crazy. IP: Logged |

I use them in every post. I'm most fond of the wink. to denote when I'm being urbane and ironic but the big teal smiley comes a very close second. There's lots to smile about. How will you cope!?

jane surely you won't need them anyway's... You have such a unique, sweet way with words that could certainly get me to spit coffee out my nose in like two seconds flat!I'd love to join you in this quest but... uhhh? Yah, well here's the deal I'm a s.a. and I'm not afraid to admit it. Yes, yes, I know there are programs for Smiley Addicts like me but, I'm really too cool to bother. Pictures are so over rated at times for sure...
But sometimes you really need to express somethin' and ONLY a smiley will say it just right... Ya' know what I mean? + The Anti Boredom Campaign Free Astrology Books For YOU

yfis - Well, I'll just have to stage an intervention for you one day. And damn you for making me crave a blushing smiley with your kind words. But thank you.wheelsofcheese - Nope. I'd relish the ban even more. I have a touch of the ascetic in me and enjoy some deprivation from time to time. If there's a smiley that whips itself, I may break though. IP: Logged |

I never knew there was a "Girls Gone Wild" smiley. I don't think a post has ever had a better time than that one is having, yfis.IP: Logged |

Smiles reduce misunderstandings and increase shared love and joy when used properly. I only dislike them when people abuse them and use smiles or hearts in meanness. It takes away from the purity of the emoticon and decreases trust all around. People then begin to fear and distrust the smiley and that is just a perversion of innocence. Ya know? I would never give up emoticons... although I am too lazy to find alternate emoticons that are not offered up by the site. :^D Heck, I'm too lazy to learn all of the choices that are offered by the site. Now Jane... ( ) you are saying that if we share a wonderful, deep, and love-filled moment and I give you a heart-felt that you will just dis the love?! :^D But I need a heart! There are just too few loving gestures in life as it is... come back to emoticons, Jane! They are a positive addiction!!

It's best to be very careful about these things, jane. Are you sure you want to quit cold turkey? This could cause some adverse health effects. It might be best to take it slow, as in most cases. First and foremost, make a concrete decision about where it is you stand on this issue. Are you against all forms of symbols or just smilies? There are other symbolic forms of communication that could replace your addiction to smilies without you even noticing and then you might get so frustrated with yourself, that it could cause you to @%#$%#@$!@#@%^**@#!!! Know what I mean?Yeah, best to take it slow for now so you don't set yourself up for too big a disappointment. We like you and we don't want you to yourself. IP: Logged |

You have all raised good points in favor of using the smilies. My selective memory will now wipe them all from my mind.MM - Your discussion of smiley abuse moved me. And in the case of an offered heart, would you accept in return a heartfelt "ditto"? NosiS - The crucifix gave me an idea. I'll give up the smilies just for Lent. Kal - I'm learning how to make smiley smoke rings.

I had a relapse the other night. I was startled by Glaucus' telepathy, and succumbed to an .I've allowed myself to fall deeply into an emoticon world again. I've wallpapered my room with and so on. It resembles Nash's room in "A Beautiful Mind." So I lasted about 4 days. Wonderfully pathetic. IP: Logged |
