Hey everyone! I'm gonna be heading to Edinburgh, Scotland in the summer to take some summer courses at ECA.I was thinking of arriving in London and staying there for a day to enjoy the sites. I've been doing some research of places to go and where to stay, but I thought I'd ask you Brits for your suggestions. So, are there any places that are a "must see" for tourists in London? Also, what would you all say about arriving in Manchester instead? Would it be less expensive, do you think? London is London, of course, but I thought Manchester might be nice too. I'd appreciate your help. IP: Logged |

Even though I ám not in the UK anymore, I lived there for about a year and a half. One day in London isn't enough to explore the city-seriously. If I had to say what you should see, I would say: Buckingham Palace, The London Eye, The National Gallery, Madam Tussards. As for Mancs, I would opt for a stop-over on the way to Edinburgh, from London. Rather arrive at London, even though it may be more expensive. Just my thoughts. IP: Logged |

I think all of those places mentioned by Fiery, although I wasn't keen on Madame Tussauds as I found it a bit eery. I'd start off in Covent Garden (markets, awesome Mongolian restaurant!, live music and theatre for free) and then I'd go to the Tate Modern, which is within walking distance of the National Gallery. Great cafe and a riverside walk. I think you'd dig the Tate Modern NosiS. http://www.tate.org.uk/modern/ Manchester is great but unless you have a friend who lives there who knows it I would say it would be difficut to know what to see (a friend showed me around once). Better off going to London I think. I don't know how you are fixed for accommodation but prepare to be shocked by UK prices. This is the best site for hostels, very cheap in comparison to hotels. I've been all over Europe staying in hostels recommended on here, as they are rated by people who've stayed in them. Some of them are very quirky. http://www.hostelworld.com/ I am so glad you're finishing your trip in Edinburgh. Edinburgh knocks the socks off London in my opinion, it is awesome. I hope you have a ball.

My favourite part of London is Southwark ~ walk along not far from the riverbank and you can find the replica of the Golden Hinde, the Clink (prison museum) and the Globe. You get a real sense of the history of the city. On Cable Street there is a circular mural depiciting the battle of Cable Street in the 30s when the local community (with strong Jewish contingent at that time) fought off Moseley's black shirts. I used to live near there. I took a friend to see this but it had personal meaning to him being of this religious affiliation. The obvious bit of Manchester to visit is Canal Street with it's clubs and bars. This is the traditional gay quarter of town. Been a while since I've been there but I used to go to the City a bit, I've got friends there. The North East is high on my list of favourite places in England. Newcastle is a great night out. If you are more into history Hadrian's Wall is worth a visit. Or go and see the Angel of the North.

Awesome! Thanks a bunch! I've also got the option of arriving in Glasgow but I think that London is at the top of my list right now. Thanks for the hostel idea, wheels. I'm a little concerned about where I'd stay for the first night there. It's not like I can just go about the city carrying a bunch of luggage like Paddington the Bear. lol! Thanks for the replies everyone! It's given me some good food for thought! IP: Logged |

So I'm definitely going into London and I'm staying at a hostel in Bayswater. Thank you for the suggestion, wheels. As one might predict, I've decided that the first landmark I'm visiting is the Rudolf Steiner House in London. lol Go figure! Then, I think I'll head over to Bankside and check out the Tate Modern (thanks again to wheels), the Southwark Cathedral (thanks to bluemoon), and the London Bridge. Also on my list are Big Ben, Trafalgar Square and Cleopatra's Needle and perhaps a service at St. Paul's. It might be a lot, but I think I can do it! I'm so excited... Anybody want to meet me for a cup of coffee? IP: Logged |

When I visited, I went to a Salvador Dali exhibition. It was amazing. It's right by the London eye, and well worth it. http://www.countyhallgallery.com/exhibitions/dali.htm IP: Logged |

Thanks, wheels.I'm not quite sure what you mean by that comment...it makes me feel a little weird. lol I'm a fella through and through. For some reason, though, I must write like a gal. I always thought I had more of an intelligence-driven tone. Oh well. What to do? IP: Logged |

I think the reason I thought that is because of your paintings. My own prejudices and preconceptions coming through strongly here, but I just assumed there is no way a man could paint such strongly maternal and loving pictures of babies and mothers. I just love them, they are really powerful. Big apologies for my attitude! You learn something new every day hey? Safe travels IP: Logged |

Don't bother with Enfield - it's crap here!!! Are you going to London at all? If you are, try and get on a boat ride up and down the Thames - dusk is the best time. IP: Logged |
