This is from a book by Buddhist teacher, Cheri Huber,
called "Making A Change for Good, A Guide to Compassionate Self-Discipline"

The Two Forms of Self-Discipline

Harsh and Punishing:
____________________________________

"Do not give in to weaknesss"
"Push ahead no matter what"
"Your lack of resolve is pathetic"
"You're a failure if you quit"

Supported, Assisted, and Nurtured:
____________________________________

"I will not abandon myself no matter what"
"I will ask for help if I need it"
"Deep down this is what I really want"
"I know I cannot fail if I do this with love"

Sounds like a good book!

I'm happy to say I spend 95% of my time practicing the second form of discipline.

You need to combine the two.
Sometimes you just have to do number one and not allow yourself the luxury of number 2.
I have often been heard giving myself the "For the love of God, stop whining and just do it " speech.
It has often made me surprise myself at how resilient I can be with the resultant rise in self empowerment.

"I will not abandon myself no matter what"

This has been my life motto..even in the depths of my dark childhood...
