This is a polictical hot potato here in the U.K ~ not just the cost of fuel, but tax on it. There was so much protest the government had to bring in winter fuel allowance for all senior citizens. I doubt it is enough for many people who have to struggle on a basic state pension and live in the more chilly parts of the island.

quote:

Despite a decline in the number of winter deaths in England and Wales last year, Help the Aged said the government needed to make more money available to older people who are being hit hard by rising fuel prices.

"While the fall in the number of older people who died last winter as a result of cold-related illnesses is welcome, there is absolutely no room to be complacent," said charity spokesman Steve Jones.

"Despite these new figures, many pensioners still agonise about whether or not to heat their homes in the cold weather. In the world's fourth richest country, this is simply shameful.
