Well, I'm glad someone is looking at this problem. Yet, the report falls short of providing the essential information necessary to correct the problem.

The information missing from the report goes right to the heart of how to correct the very problem they've highlighted.

Just whom is dumping Perchlorate into the Colorado River and also contaminating the soil and underground water supply?

There are hyperlinks in the original article that don't come over in copy/paste, jwhop
Perhaps you might have a look at the link, with all the related links embedded there.....
I think this is a VERY important question:
quote:
How bad will the situation have to get before environmental regulators will no longer be able to ignore the mass poisoning of the nation's food and water supply?
And, must every article posted here come with both a Problem and a Solution in order to escape scorn??
Must every article be complete unto itself with *nothing* missing that might pique the readers interest and push them to explore the subject further?? Can't an article just be informative so that people can discuss it??

Background

Perchlorate is a naturally occurring and manmade chemical. Naturally occurring perchlorate, for example, is found in arid states (e.g., Texas), as well as in nitrate fertilizer deposits in Chile and potash found in United States and Canada. Most of the perchlorate manufactured in the United States is used as the primary ingredient of solid rocket propellant. Perchlorate is also used in pyrotechnics, such as fireworks, gun powder, explosives, and highway flares. In addition, perchlorate is used in a wide variety of industrial processes, including tanning and leather finishing, rubber manufacture, paint and enamel production, and additives in lubricating oils.

In recent years there has been increasing interest in perchlorate levels in soil, ground water, drinking water, and irrigation water around the country and what health effects these levels may have. Human exposure to sufficient doses of perchlorate can interfere with iodide uptake into the thyroid gland, disrupting its functions and potentially leading to a reduction in the production of thyroid hormones.

In order to work toward development of an assessment of the potential risk of perchlorate, FDA is conducting exploratory surveys to better understand the occurrence and levels of perchlorate in a variety of foods from various locations. The levels of perchlorate found in the foods analyzed will also be used to better understand perchlorate exposure from food and to support action, if warranted, to protect the public health.

For determining perchlorate levels in food, a rapid, sensitive, and specific ion chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (IC-MS/MS) method, developed by FDA, with limits of quantitation of 0.5 part per billion (ppb) for bottled water; 1.0 ppb for produce; and 3.0 ppb for milk, grain products, and seafood was used. This method, entitled "Determination of Perchlorate Anion in Foods by Ion Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry," has been published in the September 15, 2004 issue of Analytical Chemistry (Analytical Chemistry, 2004, 76, 5518-5522) and is posted on CFSAN's internet website.

It may not be a matter of "who is dumping?" -- probably a good interim measure while the FDA studies this is to take a kelp supplement.....

Investing in a reverse-osmosis water filter is already on my To-Do List.....

It is thought that a high percentage of my permanent neurological damage was from heavy exposure to this chemical when I worked in the rubber industry. I worked in closed rooms with
huge tanks(about 6 feet by 30 feet in size) filled 5 feet deep with a heated version of it.
It dissolved a few pairs of heavy rubber gloves each shift. That was before they realized the danger. A DSMO based solvent was also used along with perchloroethylene (PCE or PER), trichloroethylene (TCE), and carbon tetrachloride and Tolulene.
The Amish who worked there too would not follow proper disposal protocol and would pour hundreds of gallons of these chemical out back on the ground daily. I reported it to the EPA and it was discovered the town's water supply and much of the land was severely contaminated. It was so bad it qualified for Super Fund Toxic cleanup. Much soil was removed and I was put in charge of Toxic waste disposal and inspection where I worked...leading to even more exposure to me even though wearing hazmat body gear and respirators.

Bless you!
I did what I could about toxins back then, and still keep my eye out for violations.
Yeah, my thyroid was ruined too.
Pretty sure those toxins were the cause.
Maybe even all my miscarriages too.
Thanks again!
Blessings

well, i'm taking kelp as of NOW! iodine is in short supply unless you eat seaweed, use iodized salt,, or take supplements. sea salt for some reason is not iodine rich, you would think it would be! but what a miracle - for years i have had a slightly swollen gland right by the parathyroid. started taking iodine supp 3 DAYS AGO and it has gone down to almost nothing already. guess i needed iodine! and that it might seriously help with you guys' perchlorate related problems?? i hope!!XX
