I want to get a laptop. Does anyone have any opinions on the pros or cons of Apple Macs? I haven't had much experience with them? So just wondering if it's a good time to go there. Thanks.

I don't know much about this, but I do have a friend who recently purchased an Apple Mac laptop and it is soooo pretty
He LOVES it. It's so lightweight and easy to maneuver. I played with it for a few minutes and was pretty jealous

Anyway, that's superficial experience. But I will say they're really light and easy to carry around anywhere, which I would think is a huge plus. He didn't have any problems with it, hasn't complained...seems to love it.

MVM

I hate to say this - but that superficial thing - with a laptop - it is a factor. I mean, it has to look good. But I'm trying not to be swayed too much by that. Trying.....

Thanks for you reply, much appreciated.

LOL, glad to help Hey, rest assured, the thing looks AMAZING. I am not a gadget person, but I was mesmerized by it ("Oooh, PREEEETTTTYYY" lol). How light it was shocked me. Seriously!

Apple seems to have a lot of gimmicky bells and whistles. Lots of shiny nonsense to me.

A friend of mine works for a men's magazine and she is so wrapped up in superficiality. When her Apple laptop's hard drive died after only 1 year of use, she went out and got another because they're the trendy item to own.

I've had a Toshiba M-45 for over 3 years, I use it constantly and it is still as good as new. I love it.

**Edit: the only thing I've been really impressed with about Apple laptops are their battery usage. I've seen them last for 8 hours between chargings. Right out of the box, the battery paired with my M-45 lasted less than 2 hours, pretty poor. Otherwise a great laptop.

I know someone uses this for non-wrapped up in superficiality reasons, he's a brain cancer researcher. I think it's Apple he uses, he certainly doesn't normally use PCs and Microsoft. Makes sense, it's meant to be strong on visuals.

I use my machine as a typewriter with internet and email access, so I wouldn't know from personal experience. My professional life is research, which just needs the same, nothing fancy.

It depends entirely on what you plan on using it for.

I just went through a several week process of picking out a laptop. And I really wanted a mac.

Honestly, if youre just using it for internet use, maybe some music and photos, I really cant justify the price difference to you.

Plus, there are some compatibility issues with apples. Some of the programs you use on a pc might not work on a mac.

I just decided to go with a Dell XPS. AND, if you like pretty things, it comes it several different colors. My new one is pink.

Thanks for the feedback. I get the general impression that Macs are useful in terms of appearances (though, the battery life is a really really good point.

I'm not sure how much I'll be using it. Probably to feed my LindaLand addiction. Now that the kids are all off to school, I'm going back to studies soon and I think it will be in constant use. I'm sure during breaks I'll be logging into here.

I basically want something that's reliable. While I know pc's inside out, I've never had a laptop so it's a whole new world to me. I'm really excited, actually - like a big kid - I've wanted one for ages. I want to get it right - so I'm probably trying too hard. But I suppose for the amount they cost - I'd want to get it right too.

It takes a little bit to get used to everything being on the opposite side of the window.

I got a white macbook because it's the standard OS that my school uses. and i won't lie - I also really love shiny, trendy things. i bought it off of a friend for $800 (a fkcing steal, but she doesn't know that) after she used it for 5 months and didn't like the interface, and i just couldn't resist. if it weren't such an awesome deal (for me, not her. her mother bought it for her... she's kinda spoiled. she immediately got her mom's macbook pro after her mom bought an iMac) i probably wouldn't have gotten a macbook. i probably would've gotten the iMac 24" for layout since i was a journalism major then. familiarity with Mac OSX and inDesign were essential to both newspapers I edited for.

No need to worry about learning how to use macOS. Some mac's can run windows XP on them.

Of course Linux is the best operating system.

It rally depends on what your using them for, I'm not rally a fan of macs.

Of course I was a hugh hater of them until I spent time working with one. But thats only because I felt cool using it.

Other then that my Dell Precision M90 is more functional then the mac I was using and had a better rendering card for graphics.

Of course I whouldn't be able to do any of my programing projects on a Mac.

The only thing going for the mac I was using was it was slightly more stable.

I doubt that macs are SLI and Crossfire capable, and there is now the ablity to support 3 graphics cards in a PC.

If you want to look cool get a mac, otherwise stick to PC.

Zenwarner,

did you get a Dell XPS 1330???

I hope you got the Intel Wireless card with it instead of the free dell one that comes with it.

There are some compatablity issues with some routers.

anyway, I have my eye set on the XPS 1710 with the Dual graphics cards.

Also I hope everyone relizes that laptops/notebooks typicaly last longer then Desktop PC's since there built a lot better.

I still have an 8yrs old laptop still working fine.

Were as my Pentium 4 desktop became a "paperweight" after only 5 years of use, its no longer useable.

Thethirdbenjamin,

I just ordered an M1530
And yes, I upgraded the wireless card. I'm very excited. 4gb ram and 320g hard drive.

It has great graphics too.

It comes with the dinky battery though. So I'll need to upgrade that at some point.

hello. i am on a macbook right now which i purchased last july. its super awesome. i can do everything a pc can including running windows itself if u shall need it just incase. and thats not it, it has certain softwares like parallel desktop and VMware and the free VirtualBox which let u run windows right withing mac itself.

people say there are not enough softwares for mac. thats garbage. i can do everything on a mac that i could on a pc.

there is only one word to describe a mac.... BEAUTIFUL.

i have'nt had an antivirus program or antispyware program since july since macs dont get infected. and i never felt a need for any kind of maintenance at all.

I far and away prefer Macs but I can't afford one so I have a PC. Someday I'll get a Mac again. They make more 'sense' to me.

depends on what your using it for.

Macs aren't rally good for playing games if that what your into and they have a gaming deficiency.

But, its true Macs don't get as infected as PC's do.

For a student developer, it whouldn't make any sense for me to go to a mac because the market is still PC dominated.

Hi PeaceAngel,

If you plan on getting professional astrology software, your best bet is to get a PC. There's not much out there for Macs. Matrix has an astrological program for Mac, but there are many things it doesn't do that PC software would do.

Otherwise, I have used several different Macs and I really prefer Mac over PC. I've never purchased one becaause it was always just out of pocket range for me. I use a Dell XPS M1210 and I AM A NINJA!!

It's very lightweight and I'm addicted to it. It's a year and a half old so they don't make them anymore, but Dell puts out different numbers every year or every season.

Mac's are sturdier, but you can't purchase anything in their store for under $29. At least here in NYC.

It's like the difference between a Volkswagon and a Volvo. If you can, you get the Volvo.

OK, I've rattled on long enough.

ditto what Geo says

PC is great IF you want astrology software.
Mac is great if you are human

probably people dont know this....

YOU CAN INSTALL WINDOWS ON A MAC. OFFICIALLY!

a software called boot camp bundled with mac makes it simply to install windows on a mac on a second partition. when u start ur computer with windows it acts like a normal pc. the drviers for the hardware are bundled with the mac os x dvd. just pop it in after installing windows and it does the needful.

NOT ONLY THAT, there are virtualization softwares available which allow u to make a virtual partition while working in mac and install windows on it. so its like u use mac for everything, and then when u require windows u simply start the virtualization software and load windows right within mac. there is no noticeable difference in speed either. this way u can work with mac and windows at the same time! windows is loaded in a window as if it were an application.

2 well known paid virtualization apps for mac are 'parallels' and 'vm ware' and one free that i have tried is 'virtuall box' from sun microsystems.

short and sweet, while i can agree with the price factor, need to run windows is no excuse anymore to not get a mac.

PS: my macbook was giving repeated problems. this time there was a dead pixel on the lcd. so i called up apple and they arranged for a new macbook for me as a replacement. whats great is that the one i have was for 66000 indian rupees and the one that they are senidn is of 95000 INR as ploicy is to replace with the same or more configuration. the new one they are sending me is aluminum body compared to my old fiber one and has a led display compared to lcd i had and 250 gb hdd compared to 160 i had and back lit keyboard. only apple is a company i know with such great customer relations.

so go ahead, bite the apple, get a mac!

Thanks everyone for all these replies. Wow! I didn't expect it at all. There's so much here - plus the 1GB worth of information that Zala emailed me. It's more than just the Mac now. It's Linux or Windows? It's PC or laptop? No, well, that's probably the only decider right now. Definitely a laptop. I'm chanelling my Libra DC. I need my Aries to kick in and make a choice - but Aries will make a choice just to have it made. I'm trying to choose wisely.
