Just to ride on the tail of the New Year Resolution thread. Here are my three favourites:

1. You've got to remember, not everyone thinks like you.

My dad ~ can't remember how that came into the conversation.

2. Never forget where you came from.

My husband ~ in the context of telling me not to take any notice of snobby work comments about my working-class accent.

3. Never invite an African man into a room with a bed in it if you are alone. He will feel obliged to offer his services even if he finds you disgusting ~ so you won't think he isn't a real man. Make sure you have a friend. He might be angry but he will leave you alone.

Kenyan friend giving me a little cultural insight. It got interesting when I explained why a man was staying in my room when I had a fiance (gay friend).

"Never set a precedence."

So I always made sure that when I was new to a job and a co-worker or boss asked me to make coffee that I made the worst coffee ever so they'd never ask me again.

Great 'food for thought' blue moon. Maybe I haven't listened well, I could not think of a whole lot of what I would call good advice. Solicited or otherwise. After much pondering, and a grimace about the density of a hard head...My Sous Chef told me after a particularly ugly Spanish inquisition style 'meeting' with the neophyte owners of a restaurant I was chef at. There is no emotion in business. Meaning that I was inappropriately emotional about the confrontation. Emotion should not enter into business.

That's got to be the weirdest advice I've ever heard. lol. Interesting though!

Best advice I can recall is about writing when I went to see one of my favorite writers, Paul Astor, give a reading. A young author stood up and asked what advice he would give a writer, and Mr. Astor said:

"Writing's like riding a bike down a major street. You'll find a lot of people passing you in fast cars and motorcycles...and here you are on this dinky bike, just pedaling away...don't pay attention to who's passing you by. You're on a bike. Take your time. Look around, enjoy the scenery that these other people passing you by aren't getting to see."

Just kinda changed my life... can be applicable on so many levels too

Sure, Fist of Legend, I'll try...

It means that if you follow what your heart tells you on the journey of life, it may take you down some difficult and even terrible paths but ultimately those difficulties and lessons are what is needed for your soul's growth, and what will lead you to where you are meant to be.

That's been my experience, though it is sometimes difficult to remember that wisdom in the midst of the "difficult experience"...
