It means that just because someone is suffering doesn't mean it's their fault. Too often, people use the concept of karma in order to make other people feel deserving of their suffering, or to make themselves feel deserving of their good fortune. The point of this thread is to provoke people into thinking twice before they use karma as an excuse to judge somebody, or withhold compassion from somebody. Karma is not an excuse to take pleasure in the downfall of another person. If we really understand karma, we can react with nothing but compassion to someone who suffers. It means a few other things, as well, but this is a good place to start.

Life is unfair. But we don't have to be.

Nosis Haven't seen you around in a bit

The karma as punishment equation is a nasty business.

More than that, though, TINK.

Not only is karma not about punishment,
but, from what I have been able to gather,
the causes and effects can be so far apart,
that it is impossible to trace their paths.

At least, that is what the Buddha supposedly said.
When I read that, I wondered how they could know
that there even is such a path, if they cannot trace it.
I still wonder about that, from time to time.

So, according to Buddha, if someone is suffering,
it may be on account of something they did long ago.
Moreover, the person could, a minute later, after purging the karma,
suddenly reap the fruits of good karma and become enlightened.

Christ was crucified, but three days later he rose from the dead.

All of this should give us pause,
before we assume we can see the links between karmic causes and effects.

Anyone looking at Christ on the cross could have said,
"This is the fruit of bad karma. His teaching must be false."

But you and I know better. Don't we, TINK?

Oh ok.

I got to witness #4 and I couldn't get past his/her interpretation for some reason. I was uncertain about the direction of the punch-line.

Thanks for clarifying.

Hi, Tink!

No punchline, really.

I'm surprised it got laughs.

It's really not that kind of joke.

Buddha was twice asked by his disciples whether man's karma is personal or not. Each time he fended off the question, and did not go into the matter; to know this, he said, would not contribute to liberating oneself from the illusion of existence. Buddha considered it far more useful for his disciples to meditate upon the Nidana chain, that is, upon birth, life, old age, and death, and upon the cause and effect of suffering."
