Is the White Hawthorn Blossom scented? It looks like it would smell sweet kind of like honeysuckle. State Grape? Does every state have a State Grape? I guess mine should considering a lot of wine comes from here! IP: Logged |

Nephthys, I have seen Keralan snake dance once or twice in my childhood. I was so scared that I never saw it completely. They might be practising it as part of temple festival, even now.

Nephthys:The hawthorn tree has a very heavy, sweet fragrance. The tree is part of the "rose" family... including other flowering, fruit-producing trees like cherry and apricot trees. The tree is gorgeous in the fall.. but the thorns are hard on the feet! My Virgo's got the tree in his front yard, and his dog brings them in the house in her wiry terrier coat constantly! And grapes? We've got a ton of wineries in the county that I live in, along the bluffs of the Missouri River. The Wine & Grape Board, a division of Missouri's Agriculture Dept. lists 54 wineries on their webpage. I didn't see some of the locals on that list though... Angela IP: Logged |

Sweetlibra ~ Wow, I didn't know it was scarey. They didn't mention that in my textbook, but of course a textbook is impervious to opinion. It sure would be interesting to see! Please let me know if I understand it correctly; It is performed around/in a mandala painted of spices where the Pullavas, an outcaste group perfom it to guard against ill fortune, and cleanse the community of pollution. A young Pullava man does a "fire massage" around the rim of the Mandala, doing somersaults, twists and serpentine movements, and 2 young girls sit cross legged and slide their bodies around in jerky motions and sweeps of their long hair. They mess up the mandala. I don't have much info. as to when/where/if they use actual snakes? ScotScorp ~ It looks like the popcorn rose! Only our popcorn rose doesn't have scent. Wow, I didn't even know that Missouri had wineries. It's great to learn neat things like that here at LL! IP: Logged |

Nephthys, your description is almost correct. No they wont use actual snakes. It is performed to satisfy snake gods (who people believe cause misfortune if not attended properly) got it from googleSarpa pattu (sarpam thullal) or snake dance is a ritual art performed in shrines and temples devoted to Nagaraja the king of serpents. It is performed by women who belong to the Pulluvar caste, in a specially decorated pandal, before the sarpakalam (snake designs on the floor). The women dance in a frenzy to the rhythm of the sarpa pattu, until they fall down exhausted. The sarpa pattu is performed to the accompaniment of veena, kudom and kaimani.
