I just got a bunch of ginseng and goldenseal seeds to plant! This will be the second year in a row; I split them between 4 different sites to find out where they’d be happiest... and now I know! IP: Logged |

This is a good list. A lot of these plants grow wild around here, can often be purchased through your local Native Plant Society. Wild ginger (Asarum canadensis) is one of my favorites. It’s a creeping groundcover with big heart-shaped leaves. And primroses are friggin’ adorable. Maybe someday I’ll try growing cardamom. There’s a bench near the edge of my driveway that’s just outside the canopy of a big oak tree, so it gets a couple hours of direct sun in midsummer but more in early spring before the trees leaf out. I’ve planted a camellia, a hazelnut and some shrubby St. John’s wort nearby. (And a flame azalea, which is tiny and has never bloomed so far). The rest of the space is filled in with hostas, hellebores, liriope, daylily, penstemon, asters, lily of the valley and dwarf crested iris. And crocuses and daffodils, of course. Toad lily and anemones have not thrived here; if they don’t do better this year I’ll try moving them to a spot with better drainage.
