I've been checking into making my own household cleansers... mostly with vinegar, baking soda, and lemon. Is there a safe, simple, homemade way to make laundry detergent?

Can I just use baking soda and vinegar?

Any suggestions or websites that address this would be muchly appreciated!

We recently started using 7th generation products, and absolutely LOVE them. THey have dish soap, laundry soap, and general cleaners.

I forgot to add that for a time we were using vinegar in the laundry instead of detergent, and it worked just fine. I used a 1 cup measure per load.

Otherwise, check out these sites(some of them might be the same recipie):

Did the vinegar work fine for you? I'm thinking the simpler, the better. I've checked those other links... thanks!

If I can avoid purchasing an actual detergent, I prefer that. However, if it isn't possible to clean clothes with just vinegar and/or baking soda, then these are good options.

Thanks!

Yes, I thought the vinegar was just fine. I never noticed problems getting out dirt, etc.

I even used it on the cloth diapers

looking through my book, Clean House, Clean Planet -- Clean Your House for Pennies a Day the Safe, Nontoxic Way -- the author suggests using Dr. Bronner's Sal Suds. she says it is 'not really a true soap, but actually a very refined, specially made biodegradable detergent.' it's listed as an all-purpose cleaner. i love bronner soaps. use 1/4 cup per load.

here are some natural laundry detergent recipes from my book The Naturally Clean Home -- Over 100 Safe and Easy Herbal Formulas for Nontoxic Cleansers ~

basic laundry soap powder
1 cup washing soda
1 cup baking soda (scented with essential oil)
1 cup soap flakes or finely grated pure bar soap

blend all ingredients. use 1/2 cup per load.

basic laundry soap liquid

1 ounce liquid castile soap
2 tablespoons glycerin
1 cup washing soda
1 cup baking soda
2 cups warm water
10 drops of essential oil

combine all ingredients in heavy plastic container and shake well before using. use 1/4 to 1/2 cup per load.

the glycerine is supposed to add cleansing power, as well the essential oil. grapefruit essential oil is especially cleansing. grapefruit seed extract is antibacterial.

washing soda is an extra-powerful cleanser, that's good to add any laundry detergent. it's also good for making natural cleaning solutions.

I've only used this laundry detergent once, so far, but my sister has been using it for a couple of weeks, and loves it (she hasn't needed to use dryer sheets after washing her clothes, since she started using it): Vegetarian Laundry Detergent/soap Unscented 86+ loads!

It doesn't have to be unscented ~ she has a list of scents you can choose from... I liked the Yuletide Summer Solstice, but the scent wasn't nearly as strong once it was all mixed together.
