Are they eco friendly? I've seen the articles about solar cookers, so that isn't the info I'm looking for, but I'm already in possession of two crock pots and I can't find definitive information regarding their environmental impact. This all started when I was trying to determine if it is more energy conscious to use dried beans or canned beans (jury is still out there, too.) One thought I had was to prepare the dried beans in a slow cooker. Ideas? IP: Logged |

Hi Future, Any beans apart from lima beans take a long time to cook. Soak the beans for about 24 hours before you cook them. It takes a long time to cook them in a crock pot as well so I'm not sure that's the most energy efficient way of doing it. At any rate, you have to soak them first. I am a big fan of beans so I know a thing or two about them IP: Logged |

I'm in love with beans! Even the limas. The only ones I don't like are green beans and anything like them.I'm trying to figure out if canned or dry are better overall. Even with a 24 hour soak, you're still looking at 2-3 hours cook time on the stovetop for a bag of kidneys. I want to be as eco-friendly as possible. IP: Logged |

Hello Future, have you thought about a pressure cooker rather than a crock pot? They can reduce cooking times by 70%. I've never had one, but just looked them up, not knowing what crcok pots are (we call them slow cookers over here). My mum had one when we were little.IP: Logged |

I love crock pot cooking. It is so nice to come home from work and dinner is done with minimal effort. I made my first successful crock pot of beans this past weekend. It was a recipe from navy beans and ham...yummy. But my next attempt will be black eyes peas and of course corn bread. My grandma made this when I was little. She would serve a big ol bowl of black eyed peas poured over her famous corn bread....YUM! Anyone know of a good crock pot recipe for this? I bought the canned black eyed peas but they just aren't the same... IP: Logged |

ahh yes.. I heard about how black eyed peas are a tradition in the south. The more you eat for new year's the better your luck for the coming year....? Something like that. Actually I just saw a thread about this... off to visit that thread...lolIP: Logged |
