I need to make a list of low-maintenance yearly veggies and flowers I can grow at a local elementary school. I've heard tomatoes and beans are very popular, but have absolutely no idea as to what other veggies and types of flowers I should plant and how much maintenance comes with each plant.Suggestions please? Couple questions S/C729, What hardiness zone are you in and by "yearly" do you mean perennial or annual plants? If you live in U.S., use link below to find your planting zone. http://www.jacksonandperkins.com/gardening/MP/zonemap ------------------ Christian, Jew, Muslim, Shaman, Zoroastrian, stone, ground, mountain, river, each has a secret way of being with the Mystery, unique and not to be judged. Annuals grow one season only and die. Perennials return year after year. ------------------ Christian, Jew, Muslim, Shaman, Zoroastrian, stone, ground, mountain, river, each has a secret way of being with the Mystery, unique and not to be judged. Rumi IP: Logged |

Yummy selection starfox! Since there are few (only one comes to mind, aspargras) perennial veggies, a summer selection of carrots, eggplant or peppers will give you a nice seasonal variety.Perennial flowers Bulbs for spring color: tulip, daffys, Hyacinths etc. Late spring / early summer Primrose windflowers Siberian Iris German Bearded Iris mid summer color Hosta`s Daylillies; coneflowers rudbeckia
late summer/fall Mums Phlox Asters Daisys Just a few planted together would give you a full season of color! ------------------ Submit to Love without thinking, as the sun rose this morning recklessly, extinguishing our star-candled minds. Rumi IP: Logged |

I ate a tiny bite of a beet today. I would describe it as flattened dried out cranberry sauce.------------------ "To avoid criticism, say nothing, do nothing, be nothing." Aristotle IP: Logged |

More questions for juni:What do you mean by "late spring/early summer" and the other titles you used? Is that when they bloom? And when would you reccomend planting them? IP: Logged |

I`m sorry I missed this CS An example of late spring here in MI is when the snow leaves the ground, March or early April.. Early summer is when leaves are budded on the trees indicating the ground is warming up. It is different for each time zone. Most perennials are planted in early fall, ie early to late September. Some ( plant tag should say)can be planted in fall or spring.
