Little sugar ants are coming in through our bathroom window (we think), which is located just above the shower. So it's always wet there, and Diatomaceous Earth isn't going to work in such a damp environment.I don't want to use nasty, toxic sprays, but I do want to get rid of them inside the house, as they're sure to start making their way into the kitchen and other areas as soon as it starts to warm up a bit more. Not sure if cinnamon sticks would work in a damp environment either, but (please don't judge!) I would rather just get rid of them, as opposed to simply trying to deter them. Redirection is fine when they're outside, but not so much when they're in my bathtub. Any good natural remedies, or at least good natural brands that aren't completely toxic to everything and everyone? Last year it was carpenter ants (yikes!), so we had to actually call in an exterminator, which just sucked. At least this year it's just sugar ants, but I would still prefer that they not make themselves at home inside. *sigh* IP: Logged |

Carpenter ants usually come in with the fire wood, they look big, but are actually pretty harmless.About the little ones: I sprinkled cinnamon around my sink and they disappeared. The thing with ants in the house is they have to get to the source to do any real good, so if you have it sprayed, you are basically just poisoning your home and family and seldom ridding yourself of the pest. There's a nest in the ground somewhere that didn't get touched. It's just like Ami, and a million others, you get scared or go yuck, and the poisoning begins. You have to be really careful about that sort of thing, it's the same as nerve gas. That's where most of the pesticides came from. So, when we have children with anxiety and nervous disorders, difficulty focusing, we have to ask ourselves, was it really worth it? And did we even get rid of the pests? I think a line of boric acid or bay leaves may work as well. IP: Logged |

Hmm...I suppose I'll try cinnamon or something.Carpenter ants, unfortunately, can do some serious damage to a home, so we called someone in last year. I prefer not to, of course. But it's probably nothing compared to the horrible fumes that have been in our house just from having new countertops and tile put in. Part of the reason we would like to just build our own home from logs, and replant the trees. I don't really want to deal with any of that toxic crap. Mostly I get rid of the ant population with DE (or thin it out when they're outside), but I know it won't work in a damp area (and the carpenter ants were coming in through the shower head last year, but we sealed that off and *fingers crossed* haven't seen them so far this year). I don't like dealing with chemicals. IP: Logged |

I used to squeeze lemon juice. It was a deterrent not a cure and I had to be doing it constantly. For severe problems there's only one product that works. I will look it up later because I forget the name. You have to squeeze a tiny bit of the gel inside a straw and put it where the ants are already coming in. They will take it back to the nest. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how I want to look at it), my husband took matters into his own hands and put some sort of bait trap in the shower window, so the ants are gone now.I use DE outside when it's not raining (a rare occasion around here) for the red ants and hobo spiders. Had to pick all of the dandelions growing around the rocks today, to make sure that no unsuspecting bees went for the dandelions and accidentally got into the DE. (When I say "DE", I'm referring to Diatomaceous Earth.) IP: Logged |

It's the Hot Shot Roach and Ant Killing Bait. It comes in a syringe. You only need to squeeze a tint bit into the corners or into a straw but you have to refresh it often until the ants are gone. Look up ant totem messages and making changes in your life will send them away also n IP: Logged |

Peppermint oil. Get small travel size squirt bottle fill it with water and add some peppermint oil to it. Spiders , ants cockroaches etc. hate peppermint oil. Just be mindful of any housebold pets cats especially not getting it on them and staying away from the area you treat.IP: Logged |
