Had about 50 little teeny mangoes on my mango tree and all are gone. The same happened with my avo tree which had 3 almost ripe avos and my fig tree with 2 teeny figs. Grrrr what happened?I see nothing on the ground ------------------

What do you mean by gone?Did something eat them? Maybe you stopped taking your dog out there? Or did they freeze, is there anything left? IP: Logged |

No freeze. All the mango babies are just gone as are the 3 almost ripe avos and the three tiny figs.------------------

Do you have animals around in the area (birds, squirrels, or whatever) who might have absconded with them?I know that some little animal (probably a bird) dug into our first ripe strawberry about a week ago. We're considering putting some netting over our strawberries, but that would be difficult to do with trees. Sorry your mangoes and avocados disappeared.  IP: Logged |

Well, nothing wrong with bats, really...although I thought they preferred insects? But maybe they're partial to avocados and mango as well (who isn't?!).  Here's what my husband and I are doing to keep the sweet little birdies out of our strawberry patch (they can feel free to peck at the cherries and the blackberries, but we would like to eat the strawberries, thank you) : He bought some sort of plumbing pipes and some netting, and we're going to build a vertical fence of sorts with the pipes, and stretch the netting around it to keep the birds out. They do sell tree netting.It's a giant sized pain in the butt to use, but possible. My Son told me when he was fighting the fires down South that they saved half an Avocado Orchard. IP: Logged |

Hey, I used to live in that area! We had an avocado orchard (grove?) bordering our property. And a kiwi orchard. I ate so many kiwis that year that I couldn't eat them again for years afterward. Anyway...off topic, as usual.  IP: Logged |

Yeah...I suppose the netting for trees would be really difficult. What I'm considering doing with the slugs (who keep eating up my Violas and Pansies that I just planted) is planting something right around my flowers (and lettuce) that they like MORE than the flowers and lettuce. Maybe if you can figure out what type of little friend absconded with your avocados and mangoes, you can plant another tasty treat for them to eat (one that you don't want to keep, of course)? Eh...I was in 6th grade when we lived in CA briefly.My family did have an orchard in Washington up until recently, although they still have the property. But I never had to concern myself much with what they were doing. They used pesticides, and my uncle was pretty much in charge of the orchard. IP: Logged |
