I've identified a ton of berries that grow wild along our fence in the back as chokeberries, which are apparently quite edible (and tasty, as I tested one cautiously, after feeling pretty safe about the identification).Has anyone ever tried using them for anything? I don't use jam or syrup for anything, but apparently they're quite good for that. We have tons of them, so I sort of don't want to waste them. Ideas? <Eta> Eh...I think they're Chokecherries, not Chokeberries. They do look a lot alike... IP: Logged |

Thanks guys (and gals)! It's nice to be back! I'm not sure which one they are, honestly. But I have to put my hand through so much suspicious shrubbery to get to the berries (little critters crawling around everywhere and whatnot) that I'm not sure that I'll bother with them this year... Picking blackberries and getting my arms bitten to shreds by spiders and ants has been enough so far, heh. But I'll find out more about what they are, and their uses, and let you all know! But my blackberry picking skills have given me ninja-like stealth! I only wear gloves when weeding the garden, raking leaves, or...uh, basically anything else, haha. Hobo spiders and whatnot. At least I know that they don't make their webs in the blackberry bushes. Just the Candystripe spider (kind of annoying and messy with their webs, but not going to cause my hand to rot) and the beautiful orange orb weavers. I actually baked a blackberry cobbler with so many blackberries (they grow like weeds here, literally) that my brother in-law (who works for a well-known chef in this area) really liked! I still have enough for a batch of jam, and possibly more cobbler to give out with holiday baskets. It's been nice and hot here for once! IP: Logged |
