They're apparently quite the pest where we're moving to (I've never heard of them until now), and I want to be able to go exploring in the summer there without dealing with the bites and welts. As per usual, I've seen it suggested that the smell of rosemary deters them, but I have my doubts about that. I mean...the ants never avoided the cinnamon sticks I put down, or even powdered cinnamon. So I have to wonder sometimes... IP: Logged |

They're really horrid, from what I hear. Like ticks, sort of, but I guess they drop off faster, and leave a big, red, itchy bite (of sorts). If you're unfortunate enough to run into a bunch of them in one place (like a berry patch or tall grass), you can get covered in bites (so I've heard, anyway). They sound really unpleasant, and I would like to find something to repel them before I get there!

Hrmphhh.I've read some really unappealing ideas online. Trying to naturally deter insects, mites, etc. seems unnecessarily difficult. I'm sure the Native population had to have some sort of method (one would think). -__- IP: Logged |

I'm not sure about repelling, but my beloved coconut oil helps to take the sting out of things. I'm trying to remember something that I read about - a spray. If I remember it, I'll come back. IP: Logged |

My mom used to give me, my brothers and our dog Brewers Yeast. All biting insects are repelled by the smell of it in your system. During me childhood I remember maybe 3 mosquitos bites, I don't recall any chiggers or any other kinds of bites. Once I stayed at a friends house and her dog slept in her bed with us. She woke up with flea bites all over her I had only one.I give our dog brewers yeast daily during the summer and we don't ever have trouble with fleas even though he is not on any other kind of flea repellent. Very interesting, Gabby! I will look into that. Some of the other stuff I've read has sort of been like that, along the lines of smells that they don't like. IP: Logged |
