Just curious,
Anyone else out there have enough static electricity to blow a light bulb right out of the package? Weird thing is this high amount of Static electricity didn't become exceedingly noticible until I moved to Arizona- the desert. Lately anything that has metal in it gives me a shock! I try to avoid replacing light bulbs, but Occasionally , just for fun, I'll take one out of the package and watch the little swirly thing go POP. I also noticed one day I "Electricuted" the customer-friendly barcode scanner at wal-mart, OOOOPPPSSS!
Just a physical thing, or something more ominus?

There was a thread around here somewhere talking about the 'sliders-telephone pole light phenomenon' It was a while ago, but you maybe can find it and check it out.

I have an abundant amount of static but I attribute it to the drying wood stove and 9 four leggeds in the house. I get zapped so much I don`t notice it. Others do not tho soooo....

Here`s the link Pixie was talking about.

Hi, Phil. It's mostly to do with your climate. The drier it is, the more static. Try using a humidifier.

And just like your Mama told you, pick up your feet!

Thanks for the threads guys. My husband used to get very frustrated with me because every time I used the computer, something would go wrong. I now wear an anti-static bracelet when I use the fifth hard drive. Thanks again, that was fun!

Hi Philbird, may I ask where you bought the anti-static bracelet. Sounds like it would come in handy. I always get zapped on the car doors.

Purplezen,

Almost all computer technitions use them.
I believe you can get them at places like Radio Shack, Best Buys, They are very common, so I would imagine any store that sells computer parts. Also Check e-bay. They are known as anti-static bracelets, however I'm not sure they would work on cars, they are made for very sensitive computer parts, or working around computers. I'll see what I can find and get back to you.

Purplezen,
Just finished checking some stores for Anti Static Wrist Strap on the internet. Definatly, Radio Shack for about $6. If you type in Anti Guard Wrist Strap into your search engine, Your mind will be blown away by the price ranges!

hey philbird! :-)
even i get these electric current so very often when i touch almost anything of iron or even when i touch people. it is a very nasty experience as the first reaction is that of a shock with mouth wide open and eyes popped out...lately i was quite worried about it. now that i know that it happens with other nice souls ;-) as well..i am relived. i guess it has to do with dry climate ...also my skin is veryyyy dry. recently i was practising yoga in which one exercise concentrates on breathing in a rythmic cycle ie fast medium and slow again fast medium and slow which is believed to elevate body's natural energy level and i was thinking if this problem has anything to do with my breathing exercise. well your thread made me feel better....any practical remedy for it so that atleast people who accidently touch me don't get shock .....(most of the people now don't come near me and talk to me from a decent distance) hahhahhaaa.

Just a small work of warning from a computer technician, DO NOT WIPE THE SCREEN ON YOUR MONITOR WHILE WEARING YOUR GROUNDING WRIST STRAP IF THE MONITOR IS TURNED ON.

The resulting shock may be more than you bargained for. Also I read that high occurance of static shock could be a sign that you are not drinking enough fluids. The lowered water content increases the acidity of your body allowing to more easily store a charge, much like a battery. And the dry desert climate is magnifying the situation by its lack of moisture in the air to compensate. So try drinking more water and see if it helps.

You know that Static electricity consists of over 2000 volts? The only reason why it doesn't kill you is because it has very little AMPs.
