L0veLess | So I keep hearing that i should be reducing the orb to 40% which is a max of 3 degrees apart i think. But it makes the birth charts look so barren. How necessary is it to have it at 40% and not the default that astro.com gives? What are yur opinions? I miss all the aspects my chart has when it's not on 40%! D: |
alaz7200 | It's all relative to what each individual feels, but personally, I have found the following to be accurate: Conjunction: 8' Opposition: 6' Square: 5' Trine & Sextile: 4' Quintile & BiQuintile - 3' |
Moonfish | I read that 3 degs is max in Synastry. For me personally I think 5-7 degs is good for natal, but I could be wrong. |
L0veLess | ahhh its all so subjective i hate this @_@ i think that makes more sense to have 40% for synastry only and have a little more wiggle room in natal charts. |

L0veLess | ! yay okay ill just use what they give me then. SaggiMC had me all stressin' sayin i needed to use 40% cos its what 'modern' astrologists use etc... phew -_- |

I like to use about 65% (if 100% default they show aspects with orbs up to 10' which is really too wide). But astrology is no rocket science. Sometimes I vary the orbs. For example, when 2 people have heavily aspected charts (esp when at least 1 personal planet/luminary/angle is involved), I will reduce the orb to help see the strongest themes. When 2 charts have few aspects, I widen the orb to at least get a feel where there is more energy flow. However, for asteroids (as they are small and weak), keep the orbs tight. Even our asteroid expert Iq is not looking at anything more than 3' orb (for conjunction, less for other aspects). In any case, dont kid yourself by widening the orb if there are really few aspects. Sometimes, 2 persons just do not interact as closely and affect each other as much as maybe another 2 persons with more aspects(ie lack of aspects indicates indifference). This is esp true in synastry where there are few aspects and those involved personal planets/angles/luminaries are lope-sided to one person only. This is when you see one person feeling strongly towards/infatuated by another person, while the other person is not even aware of the first person. One more note: for astro.com, the orb shown in the aspect grid is rounded down (ie 5'45" will be 5'), so if you want to use a within 8' orb, you should only count up to 7' in astro.com aspect grid

I use wider orbs for natal and less for synastry/composite too, cos in most cases, we are more self-aware as an individual, so that we are likely to feel more subtle natal aspect energy, while we might be less sensitive to relationship aspect energy. I like using 70-75% for natal and 55-65% for relationships.

Ceridwen | 6° and 3° as a rough guideline. |

But trine and sextile are the same? I would put trines the same as squares, and with 6 degrees. Also, there are differences if the sun is aspecting or other planet is! |

Thank you for the information,b ut I am not really interested in mainstream views. I have my reasons for the orbs I am using. |
athenegoddess | Exact orbs are the best and what I always look for. Orbs widen if there are multiple planets and themes. |
