Police are to record hate crimes which have been motivated by misogyny after ministers announced a concession to campaigners on women’s safety.Forces will be asked to identify where a victim believes the crime has been prompted by “hostility based on their sex”.

teasel | Good. I know that some people will say, "All crimes are hate crimes" but some are specifically about someone's gender, or their race. Or their sexuality (like Matthew Shepard). |
Voix_de_la_Mer | Yup. This has been recently fuelled by a woman who was kidnapped and murdered in England. They have arrested a policeman as a suspect. ------------------ Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap but by the seeds that you plant - Robert Louis Stevenson (whatever you feed will grow) |
Belage | So when the police record these crimes as hate crimes, what is going to be done concretely to improve the situation or prevent them from happening? Do the offenders get a higher sentencing than say if they kill someone to take their money? Are they planning special public education campaign like "don't hate women", "don't be mysognyistic"? I am trying to understand how labeling a crime "hate crime" helps in making it happen less. Disclaimer: I do believe all crimes are hate crimes. |
Voix_de_la_Mer | It's in the early stages, so I don't have the answers to your questions Belage, sorry. I suppose it makes it punishable, so it could function as a deterrent. No one thing will be the absolute answer, but altogether you can have an impact. ------------------ Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap but by the seeds that you plant - Robert Louis Stevenson (whatever you feed will grow) |
Belage | Voix, I believe if someone has murderous impulses, they will find ways to act them out. Relabeling a crime "hate crime" is not a deterrent in itself, and unfortunately it makes other crimes look less severe and more tolerable. I believe if we treated all crimes against innocent people as hate crimes, that would be more of a societal deterrent than these niche words we have for certain crimes. We would be reaffirming as a society that EVERY life matters, not just the lives of certain people. |
Voix_de_la_Mer | You might be right Belage, I guess we'll see. ------------------ Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap but by the seeds that you plant - Robert Louis Stevenson (whatever you feed will grow) |
Belage | Apparently the UK Green Party Baroness Jones is asking for 6pm curfew for all men to 'lessen discrimination' https://www.nzherald.co.nz/world/uk-green-party-politician-baroness-jones-asks-for-6pm-curfew-for-all-men-to-lessen-discrimination/XTUDP22WKIYWTUXNSF7VYPZYZU/ |
Voix_de_la_Mer | We don't have to worry about them, they'll never get voted in ------------------ Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap but by the seeds that you plant - Robert Louis Stevenson (whatever you feed will grow) |
Belage | That was an interesting idea, though. |
