I have the same back issues. It will flare up and the only thing that works is rest, ice/heat and biofreeze. When it's a strain or spasm, not much to be done except to treat conservatively. Massage therapy can be helpful, but not when the pain is acute. ETA - That's supposed to be a thumbsup for the Biofreeze!!! Core strenthening is also a very good thing to be doing. If you feel radiating numbness, see a doc.
