T O P I C R E V I E WVenushere's a fun topici always notice that Americans make fun of Europeans who kiss each cheek when greeting people.. well how about this over here in Beirut we kiss 3 times, "right, left, right" or "left, right, left" why? i dunno its sort of the habbit, also its not ristricted to women, even men great each other by kissing we're quite the affectionate kind..also, it is quite common for children to kiss their parent's hand as a sign of respect a habit my family was never fond of..charmainecHugs for family and friends although the hug thing bothers me with some people as I don't like people invading my personal space unless I have a close relationship with them.rajjiShake hands.Venushugs are awesome, but hand shaking seems so detached, something business partners would do and not relatives/friends JunethirdWere i live we kiss each other twice on the cheek... Sometimes 3 depends... Gem-GurlI live in Los Angeles. But we are Russian, we are total into the kiss thing! Not multiple times. Just once on the lips. We are like a Russian community so we know everyone, even if there are hundreds of us!! So its not like kissing strangers....RedScorpOmg where I live, everyone's so distant and detached compared to where like, Gem-Gurl lives. I'm one of the most "touchy" people around, and the most I go for is a hug, for friends, or a handshake, for someone new. There's no kissing here, even for couples! It's all hush hush lol!Hell, holding hands, cuddling, or even sitting near to someone who isn't your significant other is generally accepted as awkward here. Rebecca ClarkConclusionWe Georgians shake hands following with a kiss on the cheek once only Belgians kiss on cheek twice or 3 i don't remember (omg lol).Sometimes i lose count and it becomes an awkward situation lmfaoMoonfishWhere I live the way ppl greet eachother (friends or acquaintances) usually depends on the gender.Male and Female: Shake hands...rarely see hugs between opposite genders during a 1st encounter. Hugs usually come after a friendship has developed.2 Females: Shake hands/Hug...being a female, I personally have not kissed anyone's cheek when greeting. 2 Males: Say hi/Shake hands.. I've never seen 2 guys hug, at least when greeting eachother. ail221It depends I am from the city and usually I avoid all contact with another person. But with my friends of Latino/Hispanic/Caribbean descent I have be accustomed to the double cheek kiss with my female friends. SaturnineMothWhere I come from in the states there are a lot of Italian and Greek families who do the single or double cheek kiss in greeting and parting... my family wasn't one of them, that I can remember... my old stepmother used to greet her loved ones and friends with a kiss to the lips.... (nothing passionate, to be clear), her family is the only I know of that had this tradition, they were French - Polish.. but, I don't think it was cultural in this case. Always made me react like at first.... (I was a kid!) lolWhen I became acquainted with French customs, and those who adhere to them; it wasn't uncommon to receive single to triple kisses, although they tend to be with little to no actual contact (not so uncomfortable)... hahaThen I married into a very "old-worldly" Portuguese family - you always greet everyone with left to right or right to left cheek kisses(I'm still not sure if there's a preference!) =x I find it awkward even after years of being exposed to the custom from different backgrounds... I much prefer a handshake or a hug.... but, then again... I have kissy-germy phobias, coupled with a general distrust of people touching me.... XD (complicated) ugh (As a side note; in each of the cultural backgrounds it was indeed practiced between individuals of both genders indiscriminately, it seems to be a sign of respect, amity, and love... I believe.) ^^;
