This is why I like Vedic astrology better. Sorry to hear about your experience with the negative reading.
Actually I don't think the chart can determine the exact number of marriages one will have, atleast I haven't read about or heard of any such method.
It can however show if you might have more than one or not.
But remember, astrology is all about potential possibilities. Nothing is set in stone.
Anyways,
From my understanding, the married life and spouse is always determined by the following:
* 7th house sign
* 7th lord sign & house placement
* 7th lord condition (exalted, debilitated, neutral, sitting with friendly or enemy planets, etc)
* Planets in the 7th house
* Planets aspecting the 7th house
* Venus (significator of wife, marriage & spouse of either sex)
* Jupiter (significator of husband)
* Darakarka (planet with the lowest degree, only take into account the 7 main planets, don't count Uranus, Neptune, Pluto or the Nodes)
Then you would look at all the above in your D9 or Navamsha chart.
It's a chart that surgically opens up the 9th house and it gives you the "meat" of your main birth chart.
Why the 9th house? Because that's your dharma, it's your duty in life and results of your karma.
However, it's effects only come into play once you are married, or after you've reached the age of 28.
If you are using Astro.com to look at charts, make sure you choose whole signs and Hindu/Lahiri method in the drop down menu to get accurate results.
You can experiment with the tropical zodiac but I find the Sidereal zodiac works better for me using these techniques.
