No. Not me. I can't even tell a knock knock joke. I'm the least funny person I know. It's all quite depressing really. And since I can't learn to be funny (you've either got it or you don't) I settled for laughing a lot instead.

I don't even bother trying. Besides, I've seen people trying to be funny and a bad joke is just not a very nice thing to do to people. So, I'd like to know what makes people to be funny astrologically and what makes people to NOT be so funny.

What in your chart is responsible for humour, good or bad? Do share and you don't have to be funny in your response, so no pressure.

3rd house involved. Telling a joke involves intelligence or whatever you call it.
Normally Sags/Jupiter that is attributed to funny stuff.

I have Jupiter in 3rd house, as well as Pluto and Saturn - all in Libra. I have been called "funny" and "entertaining" by friends. My Sun and Venus is in Gemini and they're both in the 11th house.

3rd house action. Yes, that makes sense since my 3rd house is virtually empty. It only has the SN conj Black Moon Lilith. My 3rd house is ruled by Saturn. Gloom and doom.

Humour on my chart, I'm going to go for seconding Kick It's answer and pointing to the 3rd house.

My 3rd house has got Mars in it, at the apex of a horrible T-Square with Scorpio Ascendant on one side, and Mercury/Venus in Taurus on the other. I've been known to deliver a wisecrack or too, but if you asked me to tell a joke I would struggle to remember one.

I like humour with word-play but that's a cultural thing as much as anything. I hate cruel humour and passionately dislike jokes that ridicule disablities, for example. Aqua Mars. The Taurus side hates being imitated, O.K if it is funny and picks up on a personal characteristic in a witty way, but if it is to ridicule my (Midlands) accent it might unleash the old Taurus temper.

People with a Gemini Mercury in a strong aspect can be quite sharp and witty. But sometimes they can stray into a little bit of the humour that can get cruel unintentionally or otherwise. One example I know has Sun rising in Gemini, and Mercury Gemini in the first house. He was funny, but underneath I think he despised most people and so there was something unpleasant in his humour. I can't remember the rest of the chart.

I'm Gemini Sun myself and I do think the 'dark side' of our sign is the potential to be cruel.

It gets worse. Mercury rules my 8th and 12th. And where is Mercury? In the 12th house squaring my Moon. My 8th house is empty. My 12th is crowded. I'm probably the least funny person you know now.

My Jupiter who's supposed to be funny is in 1st but it did nothing for my sense of humour. Jupiter is conj my Asc and trines my Venus/Pof in 11th, and sextiles my BML/SN conjunction in 3rd. Maybe I just look funny.

Comedy is the only live form of art I support diligently. I'm always in a chuckle about something or another, but don't ask me to tell you what it is because I always end up saying, "I guess you had be there."

Well ok, I'm going to play braggart and say that I am funny. If I can make a complete stranger laugh in an airport at 6am, it means something.

Humour itself is a function of fire but in particular the element of Sagittarius, ruler Jupiter. Jupiter is about expansion, optimism and from that it can be implied that laughter or happiness is too. Leo is about entertainment and good times, playing up and acting. I'd say the sign that Jupiter and Sun is in may colour the type of humour that one likes.

As Bluey pointed out, wit is very much a Gemini/Mercurial thing but I hear that Aquarians are also witty, probably because Uranus is the higher octave of Mercury. Timing has a lot to do with humour, whether it is quick as in witty or the correct timing, which I think might be Saturn.

Third house would indicate the way we communicate, first house is essentially us, 5th house is entertainment, 9th house is thinking or deeper thought.

For myself, I have Jupiter conj my ASC. ASC is in Aries, so Jupiter is in a fellow fire sign and it feels happy enough there. My 3rd house is ruled by Gemini and I have my Mars in the 3rd. The depositor of my Mars and 3rd, Mercury, is in Aquarius and it is conj my Sun which is the ruler of my 5th. My Sun and Mercury are both opposed to Saturn and square Uranus. Sometimes my timing can be off when it comes to joking or it is too wierd or even too witty (ie abstract) for people to comprehend. Venus is in 9th and in Sag so I value humour and I think humourously but my delivery, the way I communicate humour is essentially dictated by Mars and Gemini. On a good day, I'm quick and funny. On a bad day, I'm cutting or my timing is poor or I'm just come out looking odd.

So in terms of poor humour maybe look to some aspect afflicting rulers of 3rd, 9th, 1st, 5th. Look to see what is in these houses. Look to see if there is any afflictions to these planets. Look for strong fire placements, particularly things in Leo and Sag. Look to Saturn. Maybe Saturn might invest in humour and add to humour if it is in Sag for instance. However, one thing I have noticed from people that I know (and friends) is that Jupiter in Gemini makes for conservative people that do not humour others.

Hope that helps.

Unmoved, you got Saturn on the 3rd, so gloom and doom humour is fine for that. Also dry humour. Naturally you look at a Cappy rising and thats a person with dry humour.

I got Mars ruling my 3rd, placed in Scorpio and it can get a bit dirty. When someone is speaking and saying certain things, innuendo comes automatically.

23- show off. I'm jealous in case you think I'm happy for your airport whisperer stunts. I'm writing some funny material in my spare time and honestly, I dare not quit my day job.

swirl-skirt- you're too kind. Seriously. I know your words are coming from a good place. I won't change your mind though. I'll just put you in my list of people who find me funny. The list is not very long. You're the only one on it.

Kick It- yes, your mind does make regular visits to the gutter, I've noticed. That's why I like your mind. It's slightly twisted if it's not already twisted all the way.

by the way, swirl skirt, the above replies were meant to be a little "funny" or witty at least. I didn't work on them. I wanted to give you a taste of what I'm talking about.

See... Weak.

So, I'd like to know what makes people to be funny astrologically and what makes people to NOT be so funny.

Personally, I find humor to be subjective. I wonder if astrological aspects can tell us what type of humor a person enjoys???

I'm considered funny by the people around me and I also have Jupiter in Sadge in the first. Jupiter is also my chart ruler so that might have something to do with it.

Humour itself is a function of fire

I do have mostly fire in my chart.

As Bluey pointed out, wit is very much a Gemini/Mercurial thing but I hear that Aquarians are also witty, probably because Uranus is the higher octave of Mercury.

That might make sense too, because even though I don't have any thing in my 3rd house, I do have Aquarius intercepted in my 3rd. Also, Uranus conjuncts my Jupiter...

However, that being said, because I'm a Virgo, a lot of people don't get my quick subtle sense of humor. The people who do think I'm hilarious, but you have to be fairly intelligent and quick to get it. I'm also good with a well placed comeback.

I have a dirty sense of humor, but usually only with my Aries Sun and fellow Aries Moon girl friends who are into that kind of thing. We can be dirtier than most guys when we get together.

See, that was funny!

I think it depends on the signs as to how you deliver. I suspect the location and sign of Jupiter and aspects to it colour the sense of humour you like. For example, I have Jupiter in Aries and I find people falling over very funny. You have Jupiter and Uranus off memory in the first house in Sco, so your humour might be a bit more subtle and complex and darker than mine. Also as Kick It said, dry humour would aptly describe Saturn in the 3rd. Again, Saturn is a slower humour, you might have impeccable humour.

It doesn't mean that you are less funny than me in reality. I might be perceived as being more funny because fire is spontaneous and extrovert and just plain noticeable. Likewise air. Your humour might be more complex than mine and maybe operate on more levels. I think you have to be funny, every person with Jup in 1st is funny. Bluey has Jup in 1st, she's a crackpot. And you can be as well, other people have said so as well.

Do you think maybe with Saturn in the 3rd, you are shy to communicate, do you think that's what it is?

The people who do think I'm hilarious, but you have to be fairly intelligent and quick to get it. I'm also good with a well placed comeback.

Yes that can be a problem, the recipient has to be on your wavelength. I remember when I was a student and the lecturer was telling a story and it had a very funny one-liner. I was the only one in the whole lecture theatre to get that joke. Of course, I laughed and then others asked me why I laughed, I had to explain the joke to them. The lecturer noticed that no one laughed except me and said that no one got the joke except me. I'm not saying that I am the most intelligent human being but I was on the same wavelength as the lecturer. Can't remember the joke exactly now, something about Pamela Anderson being pneumatic ---> word play, as Bluey would say which appealed to me as a large component of my chart is air.

23- yes. You enjoyed it. Sigh of relief. I was aiming for a grin. So, if you laughed, bonus.

I'm not a talker. I talk because I have to. I try to never be the life of the party but I'm always in the vicinity of the talker adding single words in the pot. I type my thoughts all the time, for years now, so on LL, I might not seem shy.

I think it's an effect of Saturn Unmoved, as you say, maybe it restricts your ability to communicate and giving yourself the idea that you aren't.

Also I was thinking immediacy of the humour is important. The impact of humour from fire and air is immediate, humour is simple and direct. Reaction is immediate. Earth and water may be much more slower to get and may take more time to be more funny to the recipient. Of course, synastry helps as well. Someone with good synastry to your Jupiter and other important planets is going to find you more funny.

----

An example of immediate reaction and possible sense of humour. This happened on another thread. Two jokes that I did in roughly consecutive posts for you to compare.

Question - which one do you find more funny? I'd be interested in people's responses. What is your astrology like?

Example 1:

Me posting this picture continuously to a "fanciful" list of demands by another knowflake.
Impact: caused laughs.

Example 2:

Me taking someone's picture of Jude Law and then adding commentary and a reply response/picture.
Impact: nothing.

quote:

"I wonder where the edge is?"

"Whaaat?! He doesn't know?!"

Example 1 was run of the mill for me, not much thought put into. I thought Example 2 was much more style of humour, I liked how I was able to construct a situation of matching words to a picture and as a reply to a picture of Jude that involved absurdity and condescension (the arrogance of my Mars in Gemini is coming out). I though it was clever but everyone liked Example 1. Example 1 is more immediate and it got the laughs.

Anyway. that's enough from me, I feel like I'm hogging this post.

23 -
Example 2 has me rolling! The Jude thought is funny enough, but then when JT comes along...oh, I'm in tears.

I think what's so funny about it to me is you surprise with the absurd. You think the joke is over because Jude's thought alone was a joke. But then you throw in this unexpected, ridiculous picture that responds to Jude. Plus it's ironic because JT looks look an idiot in his pic, and yet he's the one who knows the answer and thinks that Jude, the one who looks contemplative and thoughtful, is the idiot. But it's doubly ironic b/c if JT believes there is an edge, then he is more dumb than Jude but doesn't realize it.

I love it. I must've passed over this in the zala thread. Thanks for posting it here.

lol. You're probably the only person up.

I found both funny in totally different ways. Jude Law is being laughed at. We are laughing with the guy with the big hair and he's laughing with Jude, not at him. It makes the Jude's joke niche and makes the other one a joke for all. I also found the non jude pic funnier. It was funny before the words. But I appreciated the cleverness of the Jude pic.

My chart has Mercury, one third house ruler, opposite Saturn, septile Mars(forceful communication) and exactly square Ascendant.
My humor might be considered Uranian because I have a 10th house Jupiter in Aquarius also opposite Mercury and a 5th house Uranus Jayleno North Node (life path) conjunction. Uranus forms a nice biquintile (creativity) with my MC. Jayleno is very closely parallel my Ascendant.
Aristophanes (comedy) is parallel my Leo Sun.
My chart may be of interest because I performed stand-up for a few years at southern California venues. I hadn't yet delved into astrology so I didn't realize back then that my time to really shine won't be until from 2011 forward.

Example 2 is funnier than Example 1 by a long shot. I did not find Example 1 funny at all.

Sun in Gemini (in 11th house);

Mercury in Gemini (in 12th house), squaring:
-Jupiter and Saturn which are both in Libra (loosely conjunct), in 3rd house
-Moon in Pisces, in 8th house

Unmoved - Jane is up but here it's 3pm

Maybe it was the heat of the moment that made the first one funny. Example 1 was the first in a series of picture replies. The Jude one came a bit afterwards.

I was thinking that for humour to be understood there has to be synastry that involves Jupiter (humour and maybe the 9th - the thinking) and Mercury (reasoning, the ability to communicate, hence importance of house 3 and delivery).

In the jokes that I put up, my Mercury in Aqu (conj Sun and both are square Ura) thought what to be put up. I have a quintile between Jupiter and sesquiquadrate with Mars in Gemini. Maybe my Mercury was not being aspected by others, maybe it was my Jupiter that was failed to be aspected.

Jane - I think you got the meaning . My goal in the joke was to ridicule JT, so I put him in an absurd and condescending role - such that his stupidity condescends wrongly the lack of intelligence of Jude. EDIT - yes, irony!

Sorry, hogging again
